Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how work enters and affects the lives of children in Africa, taking for granted neither the traditional values surrounding children’s work, nor the international standards against it. Many African societies nurture their children on the ingrained notion that children must work as part of their process of growing up. Children participate in their families and communities through the work they do in the house and in whatever else their families do. Such views are, however, antithetical to the dominant views in Europe and North America which see childhood as a time of freedom from responsibility and economic activity. These views have become so popular with the elites in other countries to the extent that they now drive international campaigns against ‘child labour’, and have been incorporated into what are now considered universal international standards and conventions. This book was conceived within the framework of the CODESRIA tradition of taking African perspectives seriously and not allowing social research in Africa to become subservient to values from outside. African scholars remain keenly aware of the need not to isolate themselves from developments in the wider world, which could lead to stagnation. This book, through empirical observation of the lives of African children, the work they do, its place in their lives, and what the children say about it, proposes new perspectives towards a new understanding of this complex stage of human development. Work is not simply about the right to income: work provides identity and status in society, and participation in the community. People relate to one another through work. Those who do not work are often without status and are at the periphery of society. One of the major ways in which this book differs from most of the available literature is in the understanding it brings to the problem of ‘child labour’. There are economic reasons why children may need an income of their own. There is the demographic fact that the proportion of children to adults in low-income countries is nearly double that in high-income societies. This book attempts to demonstrate that work is both necessary and beneficial in terms of a child’s development to become a full, responsible, and respectable member of society.

Book excerpt: Although gender and non-gender scholars have studied men, such an academic exercise requires a critical and focused study of masculine subjects in particular social contexts, which is what this book attempts to do. This empirically rich collection of essays, the seventh of the CODESRIA Gender Series, deals with critical examinations of various shades and ramifications of Africa's masculinities and what these portend for the peoples of Africa and for gender relations in the continent. So much has changed in terms of notions and expressions of masculinities in Africa since ancient times, but many aspects of contemporary masculinities were fashioned during and since the colonial period. The papers in this volume were initially discussed at the 2005 month-long CODESRIA Gender Institute in Dakar. The contributors are gender scholars drawn from various disciplines in the wide fields of the humanities and the social sciences with research interests in the critical study of men and masculinities in Africa. The CODESRIA Gender Series aims at keeping alive and nourishing the African social science knowledge base with insightful research and debates that challenge conventional wisdom, structures and ideologies that are narrowly informed by caricatures of gender realities. The series strives to showcase the best in African gender research and provide a platform for emerging new talents to flower.

Book excerpt: The first Canadian Conference on Children, held in the province of Quebec in October, 1960, was the culmination of several years of planning and of three years' specific study of projects which dealt with existing programmes for children in Canada. Delegates came from provincial and national organizations and the Conference was supported by a large number of organizations connected with child health, welfare, and education. The programme of the Conference was divided into three sections: plenary sessions, group discussions of the projects, and group discussion of children under three headings: "the early years," "the middle years," and "the transition years." The whole programme covered children from birth to about the age of seventeen. The Proceedings includes the speeches presented at the plenary sessions (by Sir Geoffrey Vickers, Chairman of the Research Committee of the British Mental Health Research Fund; Dr. K.D. Naegele of the University of British Columbia; and Dr. Otto Klineberg of Columbia University); and valuable summaries of discussions by Dr. Murray Ross (York University), Mgr. Irénée Lussier (Université de Montréal), and Dr. N.A.M. MacKenzie (University of British Columbia).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate is no longer whether to use information and communication technologies (ICT) in education in Africa but how to do so, and how to ensure equitable access for teachers and learners, whether in urban or rural settings. This is a book about how Africans adopt and adapt ICT. It is also about how ICT shape African schools and classrooms. Why do we use ICT, or not? Do girls and boys use them in the same ways? How are teachers and students in primary and secondary schools in Africa using ICT in teaching and learning? How does the process transform relations among learners, educators and knowledge construction? This collection by 19 researchers from Africa, Europe, and North America, explores these questions from a pedagogical perspective and specific socio-cultural contexts. Many of the contributors draw on learning theory and survey data from 36 schools, 66000 students and 3000 teachers. The book is rich in empirical detail on the perceived importance and appropriation of ICT in the development of education in Africa. It critically examines the potential for creative use of ICT to question habits, change mindsets, and deepen practice. The contributions are in both English and French.

Book excerpt: This path-breaking book provides a comparative analysis of public discourses in France and Australia on a series of highly mediatised racialised gang rapes that occurred during the early to mid-2000s. These rapes led to intense public debate in both countries regarding an apparent ‘gang rape phenomenon’ associated with young men of Muslim background. By comparing the responses to similar instances of sexual violence in two very different Western liberal democracies, this book explores the relationship between constructions of national, gender and ethnic identity in modern, developed nations of the West. The impact of immigration and cultural diversity on communities has become an issue of central concern to Western liberal democracies in recent years. With greater movements of people than ever before, and large temporary migrant populations who have not ‘gone home’, the discourse of a ‘crisis of national identity’ is a feature of many democracies in the West. At the same time, in a supposedly ‘post-feminist’ age, the focus of debates around women’s rights in these democracies has increasingly been the extent to which the cultural values of immigrant and ethnic minority populations are compatible with the espoused gender equality of the West. Through an analysis of these rapes, Kiran Kaur Grewal identifies certain commonalities as well as interesting points of divergence within the two nations’ public discourses. In doing so she identifies the limitations of current debates and proposes alternative ways of understanding the tensions at play when trying to respond to acts of extreme sexism and violence committed by members of ethnic minority communities.

This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly engaging and innovative book about the Cameroonian youth language Camfranglais explores gender-based differences in exposure to, and usage of, the variety through a comparative study. It thus adopts a rare gender-based approach to the highly complex linguistic phenomenon Camfranglais, a mix of French, Verlan, English, Pidgin and Cameroonian languages. While youth language studies flourish in sociolinguistic research, this book’s explicit focus on female speakers, their linguistic attitudes and experiences of exclusion, is unique. It investigates which factors influence language choice among young, urban speakers and especially what contributes to the overall male dominance in the usage of Camfranglais. To achieve this goal, the attitudes of both adolescents and adults as well as the channels of reproduction and distribution of the variety are examined. A special focus is laid on the processes of conscious transformation and exclusion by which male speakers try to restrict the access for female speakers. The book will appeal to academic scholars from a wide variety of fields, such as (African) linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and gender-studies, as well as the general reader who wants to learn about an exciting language contact scenario and its outcome.
