The usages of fossil fuels tend to emit the greenhouse gases that effect to global warming as well human health. To overcome these problems, the bioethanol introduced by the researches to substitute the fossil fuels. Bioethanol is a bioenergy produced by yeast fermentation at several conditions compared to conventional fossil fuels. Bioethanol is being studied because the unique properties and renewable fuels. The production of bioethanol in industrial scale involved high cost due to the usage of foods as sugar raw materials. Thus, this research is to evaluate the oil palm frond (OPF) juice as raw material for bioethanol fermentation. In this study, the bioethanol produces in shake flask by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and OPF juice as medium component. Three parameters study are initial pH of medium, agitation speed, and OPF juice concentration. The best condition of parameters determine by the highest ethanol concentration produce. Inoculum prepared in shake flask to cultivate the yeast in medium growth and ferment in 250 ml shake flasks containing medium growth and beef extract. The flasks incubate in 48 hours, 12 hours interval for sample withdraw. The products analyse for sugar concentration and bioethanol concentration. The expected results for the best condition in bioethanol fermentation are in pH 7, 150 rpm agitation speed and 100% volume percentage of OPF juice concentration.

Bioethanol has been gaining much interest recently in terms of research and development. Since there are various factors such as rising oil price, environmental issues and high rate consumption of fossil fuel, the global demand for bioethanol has shown a remarkable increase. Oil palm frond is known to be the most generated oil palm biomass annually. OPF is obtained during pruning for harvesting fresh fruit bunch, and the juice can be produced by pressing the fresh OPF using the conventional sugarcane pressing machine. The OPF juice contains higher glucose content, which is about 70% of the total free sugar. Hence, it has a high potential to be the carbon source for producing bioethanol. The parameters investigated in this research work are temperature, pH and agitation speed. Bioethanol was produced from oil palm frond juice by fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The ethanol concentration from the fermentation sample was analysed using HPLC. Using the ethanol concentration obtained from HPLC analysis, the optimum condition for the production of bioethanol was determined using the Response Surface Methodology with the aid of Design Expert software. The results revealed that, a maximum bioethanol concentration of 22.93 g/L can be obtained at the following optimum conditions : temperature of 32oC, pH 6 and agitation speed of 80 rpm. The validation result revealed that at this optimum condition, a bioethanol yield of 30.1% , which is close to the predicted value, can be obtained.

Book excerpt: Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis jacq) frond (OPF) has a great potential to be commercialized due to its abundance as an oil palm solid wastes that are generated during oil palm agriculture and harvest. OPF juice has been identified as a good candidate to replace pure or technical grade sugars for the production of value-added products. Recently, it has been reported that OPF juice can be used as the sole renewable carbon source for the production of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate), P(3HB). In order to further evaluate the future prospect of OPF juice as fermentation feedstock, in-depth investigation on the bioconversion of OPF juice to produce other valuable products such as lactic acid and bioethanol will be the focus of future research project. Prior to that, OPF juice has to be treated to remove the precipitate as well as others impurities. This study has to be done at the first place in order to further enhance the sugars recovery to increase the concentration and purity of the renewable sugars contained in the OPF juice. In order to achieve this objective, three different pre-treatment processes including chemical treatment with calcium chloride, heat and chemical treatment with hydrogen peroxide and activated carbon adsorption was applied. The process parameters obtained from sugar analysis provided an insight information about the effect of the different pretreatment methods on sugar content in OPF juice. The treated juice was subjected to further process which is purification and recovery using conventional method i.e., crystallization and spray drying.

Book excerpt: Oil palm trunk (OPT) is generated from the replantation of oil palm trees at every 25-30 years interval, left as troublesome waste as it becomes the source of infection to young oil palm trees. This OPT contains a high amount of ready-to-use sugar in the form of sap which can be directly fermented to the most fermentation products. The fermentation process for ethanol production from OPT sap was evaluated in order to produce larger amount of bioethanol. The feasibility of yeast S. cerevisiae to produce bioethanol from OPT sap was investigated along with the effect of different strains of S. cerevisiae and different pretreated mediums. It was proven that yeast S.cerevisiae was able to produce bioethanol even though the OPT sap undergoes less pretreatment compared to the previous works done by the other reseachers. The highest bioethanol yield and productivity had been obtained by using S. cerevisiae Kyokai no.7 in heat sterilized sap. The effects of temperature, initial pH, agitation rate, percentage inoculum and time of incubation were explored using 2-level full factorial design in order to find out the main factor that affecting bioethanol fermentation from the OPT sap. The factors of temperature, initial pH and agitation rate were chosen for optimization study based on the higher percentage contribution (>5 %) and lower p-values (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels were used in large quantities as a solvent and chemical feedstock in various industries. Due to limited stock of fossil fuel and rapid increase of energy demand in Malaysia, bioethanol has become a very important and necessary alternative energy source in order to replace the limited fossil fuel stock. Hence, this paper presents the study on bioethanol production by using oil palm trunk (OPT) sap which mainly focusing on substrate concentration effect toward the yield, productivity rate, and kinetic behaviour of cell growth in different substrate concentration This research was carried out by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae Kyokai No.7 in 200mL conical flask, under 30oC anaerobic condition. The research are focusing on the inoculums culture preparation, fermentation process, sample preparation, and analyzing methods. It was found that bioethanol production is increase when substrate concentration increase, from 14g/L in 60% substrate concentration, followed by 18g/L in 80% OPT sap to 22g/L in 100% OPT sap. With the highest sugar content in the medium, S. cerevisiae can produce faster ethanol production within 30 hours of fermentation duration. However, high bioethanol concentration in the process will cause the cell growth rate falls due to the product inhibition. Besides, glucose consumption rate were found out that inversely proportional to the substrate concentration whereas ethanol production rate and cell growth rate were directly proportional to the substrate concentration. Moreover, specific bioethanol production yield was found out that exceed 0.482, 0.516, and 0.465 for 60%, 80%, and 100% of substrate concentration respectively. These results will be useful in the future scale up processes.

Book excerpt: Empty fruit bunch of oil palm tree (EFBOPT), solid waste of palm oil industries, is potential for raw materials of biofuel especially bioethanol production because of its cellulose and hemicellulose contents. There are four steps to produce bioethanol, called the second generation bioethanol, from EFBOPT or other lignocellulosic materials. The steps are (a) pretreatment of lignocellulose biomass into cellulose/hemicellulose, (b) hydrolysis of cellulose/hemicellulose into monosaccharides, (c) fermentation of monosaccharides into bioethanol, and (d) recovery of bioethanol from medium fermentation broth. Pretreatment steps are the key success factor to convert lignocellulosic materials into bioethanol. This paper will review EFBOPT and pretreatment steps, including physical pretreatments, physicochemical pretreatments, and biological pretreatments.
