Book Synopsis The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.
Book Synopsis Marijuana As Medicine? by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Marijuana As Medicine? written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.
Download or read book Dot in the Weeds written by Djuna Shellam and published by Magnhild Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much beloved and fan favorite Dot Baverstock is back in this fourth installment of The Em Suite—but not in a way you'd ever expect. Dot and her son Waverly have a deep, dark secret they've been keeping for years. When Dot suffers a traumatic fall, they make the difficult and daring decision to expose themselves to their extended family. Waverly has orders to report for Air National Guard duty which would leave Dot, seriously injured, on her own or in the care of strangers. Em and Eve, with their son, Liam rush out to the Palm Springs desert to the rescue. Along for the ride is Em's ex and Liam's aunt, Prairie Fire Vaughn. But, there's something else... Dot and Waverly's secret—the "Big Mystery" and the true reason the family is needed—is revealed soon after their arrival. It appears far more will be needed from them than caretaking, while also putting them in peril. There's no question. They love Dot. They'll do anything for her—even if it means breaking the law. Regrettably, Dot's fall reignites an antagonistic foe, prompting memories of her late partner, Ivey, and the root of the "Big Mystery," taking her back to the early 1970s when they first met. In mourning for her best friend and long-time infatuation, Fiona, Prairie is on bereavement leave from her job as a major league baseball physical trainer. While Em and Eve deal with the "Big Mystery," Prairie takes on the role of primary caretaker to Dot for her physical care, and to orphaned Liam as familial continuity. Prairie and Dot haven't seen each other in twenty years, not since Dot first found her to rehabilitate Em after a life-altering car crash. Their friendship grows as they spend day after day confined to Dot's upstairs bedroom. Meanwhile, secluded on the other side of the property, lovers Em and Eve dutifully tend to Dot and Waverley's problem. They're also still adapting to being parents. Two weeks earlier, upon her untimely death, Fiona left her not-quite-three-year-old son to Em to raise as her own. Em, too, is mourning Fiona, her long-time soul mate. No one but Em truly understands why their bond was so deep. If she has her way, they never will. Love, tragedy, humor, heartbreak; adventure, mystery, and danger all deliciously intertwine in this fun, yet heart-tugging installment of The Em Suite. Though Dot in the Weeds is part of a series, it is also a story that firmly stands on its own.

Book Synopsis An Analysis of Marijuana Policy by : National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Substance Abuse and Habitual Behavior
Download or read book An Analysis of Marijuana Policy written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Substance Abuse and Habitual Behavior and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defenders of marijuana use may seize on the ambiguity or absence of evidence for such damage and ignore any other effects on education or safety; those opposed to marijuana use may emphasize the possibility of chronic disease that is suggested by some laboratory findings and ignore the social, political, and economic costs of fighting a well-established custom. The Committee wishes to make clear what it regards as the limits of this report for the selection of policy alteratives. Scientific judgment can estimate the prevalence of different kinds of use, risks to health, economic costs, and the like under current policies and can try to project such estimates for new policies. It can come to some conclusions based on those estimates. But selection of an alternative is always a value-governed choice, which can ultimately be made only by the political process.
Download or read book Contemplations written by John O'Loughlin and published by Centretruths Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-03-19 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three books of 'abstract poems' in this unusual project, which might better be described as 'word art', and they are of a character that defies intellectual intelligibility and invites a certain contemplative frame-of-mind more conducive to spirituality and, hence, to self-transcendence, meaning, in this instance, the transcendence of that fulcrum of intellect, the ego. In that sense, these 'poems' are profoundly anti-literary and correspondingly closer to the true spirit of art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONTEMPLATIVE ABSTRACTS is the logical sequel to 'Abstacts' (1983) which, being readerly, or capable of being read, was non-contemplative and therefore a precondition of abstract poems that require only to be contemplated, since effectively a species of word art. The five books in this project represent different stages in John O'Loughlin's development of a non-readerly, or contemplative, style of poetic composition, and have also been published separately under the headings 'Contemplations' (1985), 'Supercontemplations' (1993) and 'Ultracontemplations' (1994), the first of these being in three books and therefore containing the greater percentage of the material now available in one volume, as the collected contemplative abstract poems.

Book Synopsis Image of a Black Father by : Charlie Crane
Download or read book Image of a Black Father written by Charlie Crane and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Image of a Black Father" was written in the hope of inspiring young African-American men: For them to come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to except their responsibility of father-hood. The two men that I write about in this book had a great love and respect for all mankind and showing no partiality. This impressed me. The character of these men portrayed an image of fatherhood. My biological father, St. Clair Crane showed me how to live in a world of adversity and maintain dignity and respect. My spiritual father William Yaeger taught me how to live and love across racial barriers and not loose my identity. Both of these men one black and the other white etched into my heart the "Image of a Black Father". Charlie Crane was the founder of Greater True Light Baptist Church, where he served as pastor for twenty years. Charlie also established "Uncle Charlie's Group Home Inc.", a behavior modification program for delinquent boys: ages from twelve to seventeen years old. 99% of these boys were raised in homes where there was no father: which sadden Charlie a great deal. Charlie was director of the home for twelve years. Charlie attended Simpson Bible College where he received his Bachelor's Art Degree. He received a Master's Degree in Christian Education from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. Presently he is Chaplin at Community Hospice in Modesto CA. Modesto has been Charlie's city of residence for the past forty-seven years.
