Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on aplastic anaemia has until recently been limited to clinical description, morphology and epidemiology. New methods to culture haemopoietic cells, and advances in our knowledge of proliferation and differentiation in the haemopoietic cell system .opened a new area of scientific interest for this "prototype" of haemopoietic failure. In addition, bone marrow transplantation became not only a clinical method of treatment, but also a source of data useful for the discussion of pathophysiological models of aplastic anaemia. This situation prompted us to arrange an international con ference on aplastic anaemia, with particular emphasis on its patho physiology and the rationals of the current therapeutic approaches. This conference was held at Schloss Reisensburg from July 20-22, 1978 with the participation of both experimental and clinical scientists active in this field or in related areas of research. The proceedings of the symposion reflect the present knowledge as well as the many new questions which arose from the discussions. The editors are gratefully indebted to the participants of this meeting, to Gerlinde Trogele and all the co-workers of the Uni versity of Ulm engaged in preparation of this symposium and of this volume, and last not least to all sponsors who provided the financial basis for this scientific event.

The book also contains a set of useful self-assessment questions. Being pedantic, this could now benefit from an increase in the proportion of 'Single Best Answer Questions', now ubiquitous in undergraduate assessment. This will continue to be on my local recommended reading list, particularly for those students wanting a thorough understanding of Haematology, from the laboratory through to basic management. It would also be a good text for those starting a career in Haematology, such as Physician Associates and doctors early in their training.'British Journal of HaematologyThis second edition of Haematology: A Core Curriculum is written by a haematologist with more than forty-five years of experience in teaching haematology to medical students and whose pedagogical and writing skills are widely admired within the field. The textbook takes a useful, practical approach, incorporating self-evaluation questions and learning objectives that give students the information needed to understand the topic and clear indications of the core knowledge required to progress within the field of haematology. Themes covered include clinical haematology and the scientific basis of the discipline and the causes and pathogenesis of haematological disorders as well as how conditions are diagnosed and treated.Haematology closely follows the Imperial College London curriculum but medical students, trainee nurses and biomedical science students from other institutions will find the textbook equally suitable, since it includes the core student haematology curriculum as recommended by the Royal College of Pathologists.Related Link(s)

Book excerpt: The second edition of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis continues to be the only "pocket-size" quick reference for pathology residents and transfusion medicine fellows. It covers all topics in blood banking, transfusion medicine, and clinical and laboratory based coagulation. Short, focused chapters, organized by multiple hierarchical headings, are supplemented with up to 10 suggested reading citations. This single reference covers essentially all the topics required to meet the goals and objectives of a major program in transfusion medicine and clinical coagulation. New chapters in the coagulation testing section reflect the development of new tests available and their incorporation into clinical practice. Coverage includes essential updates on the importance of new cellular therapies, peripheral blood and bone marrow hematopoietic progenitor cells, as well as cord blood banking and regenerative medicine. The authors also examine advances in the understanding of molecular testing and pathogen reduction in two separate quality control chapters (one for blood centers and one for hospitals). Updated content covers new coagulation tests, cellular therapies, and quality control issues Easy to use, with focused, well-defined chapters in a standardized format throughout Offers quick "cross-reference" lists at the end of each chapter Includes lists of common abbreviations and indexes that cross reference diagnostic, clinical and therapeutic commonalities
