Book excerpt: These proceedings reflect the work presented at the conference "Interferometry in Speckle Light: Theory and Applications", held at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, (EPFL), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland. The event took place from September 25 to September 28, 2000. Thanks to the diligence of the authors, this book has been published just in time for the conference. Writing this preface in July, in anticipation of the conference, we have tried to envisage how this book will benefit the quality of discourse between authors and attendees. "Interferometry in Speckle Light: Theory and Applications" results from a bottom-up approach and is original in several ways. This conference is not part of a series; on the contrary, it is a single event. The idea of gathering scientists and engineers for a general discussion on the theory and the practice of interferometry, involving rough, non-optically polished objects, was "in the air". An opportunity of this sort was not provided by any of the conferences scheduled when the present one was conceived. For this reason, it was easy to convince a small number of renowned researchers, all of them active in the field of holographic and speckle interferometry, to organize a conference. To be specific, they are the people listed below as members of the scientific and local committees. At the same time, a particular circumstance, namely the retirement of Professor L. Pflug, helped to detennine the location of the meeting.

Book excerpt: The request to organize under its patronage at Poitiers in 1998 a Symposium entitled “Advanced Optical Methods and Applications in Solid Mechanics” by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (I.U.T.A.M.) was well received for the following two reasons. First, for nearly 20 years no Symposium devoted to optical methods in solids had been organized. Second, recent advances in digital image processing provided many new applications which are described in the following. We have the honour to present here the proceedings of this Symposium. st th The Symposium took place from august 31 to September 4 at the Institut International de la Prospective in Futuroscope near Poitiers. A significant number of internationally renowned specialists had expressed their wish to participate in this meeting. The Scientific Committee proposed 16 general conferences and selected 33 regular lectures and 17 poster presentations. Papers corresponding to posters are not differentiated in the proceedings from those that were presented orally. It is worth noting that a total of 80 participants, representing 16 countries, registered for this symposium.. The Scientific Committee deserves praise for attracting a significant number of young scientists, both as authors and as participants. Let us add our warm acknowledgements to Professor J.W. Dally and to Professor A.S. Kobayashi who, throughout the symposium preparation time, brought us valuable help.

Book excerpt: This volume of Applied Mechanics and Materials contains the papers presented at the joint 2011 Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference and the 2011 Fall Society for Experimental Mechanics Conference. This is the first time that the two societies have held their conferences together. However, it is the sixth time that the papers from an Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference have been published as a collection in a volume of Applied Mechanics and Materials. Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). The 82 papers in this volume reflect the diverse nature of Experimental Mechanics, with the emphasis placed on Integrating Simulation and Experimentation for Validation. The papers come from both academia and industry, with more than half of the contributions originating from outside the UK; thus indicating the international flavour of this event.

Provided - however - that the assumptions on which The theory is founded are well understood. But. indeed. engineering costly experience shows that "Nothing can be more disastrous than a theory" when applied To a real task outside of practical limits of the assumptions made. Because of an homonymous identity with the considered problem. J.T.P The growing interest in Isodyne Stress Analysis and the related experience of the author show that the major monograph and reference book on the subject, Isodyne Stress Analysis by Jerzy T. Pindera and Marek-Jerzy Pindera, [27], does not of contain sufficiently detailed data on the theories and techniques experimentation. The purpose of this work is to close this gap. Thus, this work is an extension of Isodyne Stress Analysis and complementary to it. Consequently, only a short outline of the theory ofisodynes is given in Chapter 2. Only the basic concepts and relations are presented to provide the link between the underlying analytical and optical theories and the experimental techniques. One of the major purposes of a preface is to formulate and explain the chosen frame of reference in a condensed form, even when some components of it are discussed in the text. A main issue of the underlying frame of reference pertains to the roles of the abstract thinking and of the observation in cognition of reality.

Review from Book News Inc.: For the first time, the international experimental mechanics conference was held in conjunction with the Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference. The 82 papers demonstrate the diverse nature of experimental mechanics, emphasizing the integration of simulation and experimentation for validation. The keynote lectures cover what optical metrology can do for experimental mechanics, applying three-dimensional traction forces microscopy to the mechano-transduction of cell clusters, and measuring thermo-mechanical coupling and its application in stress and damage analysis. Other areas covered include the validation of dynamic events, fracture mechanics, digital image correlation, measurement innovations, vibration analysis, thermal deformation, and thermo-mechanics. Book excerpt: Experimental Mechanics presents the proceedings of the First International Congress on Experimental Mechanics, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City, on November 1–3, 1961. This book presents the application of the methods of experimental mechanics to technical problems. Organized into 21 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the experimental techniques developed for different basic and applied research on strength of materials, performance of hydraulic machinery, and accuracy of mechanisms and machine tools. This text then surveys the developments in the field of mechanical measurements, including rubber gage, bolt gage, digital strain indicators, and waterproofed strain gage. Other chapters consider the experimental study of the transient response of a rocket sled with a vertically malaligned center of gravity. The final chapter deals with the conditions of collapse of stiffened cylindrical shells beyond the proportional limit of the material. Experimental stress analysts will find this book useful.

Book excerpt: This book contains 71 papers presented at the symposium on “Recent Advances in Experimental Mechanics” which was organized in honor of Professor Isaac M. Daniel. The symposium took place at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on th June 23-28, 2002, in conjunction with the 14 US National Congress of Applied Mechanics. The book is a tribute to Isaac Daniel, a pioneer of experimental mechanics and composite materials, in recognition of his continuous, original, diversified and outstanding contributions for half a century. The book consists of invited papers written by leading experts in the field. It contains original contributions concerning the latest developments in experimental mechanics. It covers a wide range of subjects, including optical methods of stress analysis (photoelasticity, moiré, etc.), composite materials, sandwich construction, fracture mechanics, fatigue and damage, nondestructive evaluation, dynamic problems, fiber optic sensors, speckle metrology, digital image processing, nanotechnology, neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation methods. The papers are arranged in the following nine sections: Mechanical characterization of material behavior, composite materials, fracture and fatigue, optical methods, n- destructive evaluation, neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation methods, hybrid methods, composite structures, and structural testing and analysis.
