Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trinidad became a colony of Spain in 1498. In 1797, it was captured by Britain and became a colony of that country. Under British rule, it was categorized as a Crown Colony. As such, it was completely controlled by the British government and the governor who was its representative in the island. The governor was judge ,legislator, and administrator all at once. In that regard, the significance of the Articles of Capitulation, the document evidencing the surrender of the island to British forces, as a bill of rights is considered. The evolution of the law, the judicial system, and the legislature and the consequent replacement of their Spanish counterparts are the bases of the text. But the influence of the economic structure in the colony on the changes that were introduced in the law is described. The change from the one-man rule of the governor to the governor with a Council of Advice, and finally, to a Legislative Council is detailed. Was Spanish law completely terminated in Trinidad? An answer to that question is given in the book.

Book Synopsis Destroyers At Normandy: Naval Gunfire Support At Omaha Beach [Illustrated Edition] by : William B. Kirkland
Download or read book Destroyers At Normandy: Naval Gunfire Support At Omaha Beach [Illustrated Edition] written by William B. Kirkland and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes numerous maps and illustrations. This monograph provides first-hand accounts of Destroyer Squadron 18 during this critical battle upon which so much of the success of our campaign in Europe would depend. Their experience at Omaha Beach can be looked upon as typical of most U.S. warships engaged at Normandy. On the other hand, from the author’s research it appears evident that this destroyer squadron, with their British counterparts, may have had a more pivotal influence on the breakout from the beachhead and the success of the subsequent campaign than was heretofore realized. Its contributions certainly provide a basis for discussion among veterans and research by historians, as well as a solid, professional account of naval action in support of the Normandy landings.

This book was released on 2005-03-03 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Customary International Humanitarian Law, Volume I: Rules is a comprehensive analysis of the customary rules of international humanitarian law applicable in international and non-international armed conflicts. In the absence of ratifications of important treaties in this area, this is clearly a publication of major importance, carried out at the express request of the international community. In so doing, this study identifies the common core of international humanitarian law binding on all parties to all armed conflicts. Comment Don:RWI.

Book excerpt: The closest thing to total war before the First World War, the Seven Years' War was fought in North America, Europe, the Caribbean and India with major consequences for all parties involved. This fascinating book is the first to truly review the grand strategies of the combatants and examine the differing styles of warfare used in the many campaigns. These methods ranged from the large-scale battles and sieges of the European front to the ambush and skirmish tactics used in the forests of North America. Daniel Marston's engaging narrative is supported by personal diaries, memoirs, and official reports.

Book Synopsis Curaçao in the Age of Revolutions, 1795-1800 by :
Download or read book Curaçao in the Age of Revolutions, 1795-1800 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1795 through 1800, a series of revolts rocked Curaçao, a small but strategically located Dutch colony just off the South American continent. A combination of internal and external factors produced these uprisings, in which free and enslaved islanders particiapted with various objectives. A major slave revolt in August 1795 was the opening salvo for these tumultuous five years. While this revolt is a well-known episode in Curaçao an history, its wider Caribbean and Atlantic context is much less known. Also lacking are studies sketching a clear picture of the turbulent five years that followed. It is in these dark corners that this volume aims to shed light. The events discussed in this book fall squarely within the Age of Revolutions, the period that began with the onset of the American Revolution in 1775, was punctuated by the demise of the ancien régime in France, saw the establishment of a black state in Haiti, and witnessed the collapse of Spanish rule in mainland America. All of these revolutions seemed to converge by the late eighteenth century in Curaçao. The seven contributions in this volume provide new insights in the nature of slave resistance in the Age of Revolutions, the remarkable flows of people and ideas in the late eighteenth-century Caribbean, and the unique local history of Curaçao.
