Download or read book Illuminate written by David M. Corbin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to create a positive work environment by accentuating the positive and illuminating the negative Illuminate argues that we can't create positive work environments without accepting the existence of the negative. Though "positive thinking" has its place in the work world, we can't ignore the negative, whether it be in the form of challenges, problems, limitations, or other negative business realities. In order to foster healthy, functional business, we have to create a culture that allows for open expression and the sharing of ideas-especially when those ideas are negative in nature. The key is that negative situations and conditions should be introduced and dealt with in a strictly positive light. The result is an organization able to look at itself honestly and stay alert to possible threats. A unique kind of business book, Illuminate is written in the style of an allegorical fable that teaches you a three-step process for confronting, examining, and fixing any problem in the office. Offers practical ways for dealing with negative situations to achieve positive outcomes Serious wisdom wrapped in a fictional format Author David Corbin operates a successful consultancy that helps industry and government maximize productivity and, therefore, profitability Corbin is also the star and co-director of the hit 2007 self-help film Pass It On; he is featured in the 2009 Napoleon Hill Foundation Film, Three Feet From Gold If your corporate culture can't deal with the negative without creating more negativity, this is the perfect guide for creating and sustaining a culture of positive change.

Book Synopsis On Apologising in Negative and Positive Politeness Cultures by : Eva Ogiermann
Download or read book On Apologising in Negative and Positive Politeness Cultures written by Eva Ogiermann and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how speakers of English, Polish and Russian deal with offensive situations. It reveals culture-specific perceptions of what counts as an apology and what constitutes politeness. It offers a critical discussion of Brown and Levinson's theory and provides counterevidence to the correlation between indirectness and politeness underlying their theory. Their theory is applied to two languages that rely less heavily on indirectness in conveying politeness than does English, and to a speech act that does not become more polite through indirectness. An analysis of the face considerations involved in apologising shows that in contrast to disarming apologies, remedial apologies are mainly directed towards positive face needs, which are crucial for the restoration of social equilibrium and maintenance of relationships. The data show that while English apologies are characterised by a relatively strong focus on both interlocutors negative face, Polish apologies display a particular concern for positive face. For Russian speakers, in contrast, apologies seem to involve a lower degree of face threat than they do in the other two languages."

The Complete Works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca is a fresh and compelling series of new English-language translations of his works in eight accessible volumes. Nussbaum, this engaging collection helps restore Seneca—whose works have been highly praised by modern authors from Desiderius Erasmus to Ralph Waldo Emerson—to his rightful place among the classical writers most widely studied in the humanities. Hardship and Happiness collects a range of essays intended to instruct, from consolations—works that offer comfort to someone who has suffered a personal loss—to pieces on how to achieve happiness or tranquility in the face of a difficult world. Expertly translated, the essays will be read and used by undergraduate philosophy students and experienced scholars alike. Praise for Hardship and Happiness “[The Complete Works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca] brings together many preeminent anglophone scholars of Seneca as editors and translators and succeeds in its aim to reach a wider audience through readable, modern English translations. . . . The overall high quality of the translations and notes make this volume (and its respective series) highly desirable for scholars and libraries alike.” —Classical Journal “A significant improvement over what has been available in English of the previous century. . . . The translations presented here admirably achieve the aim set out by the series’ editors: ‘to be faithful to the Latin while reading idiomatically in English.’ . . . Hardship and Happiness is a handsome volume, beautifully conceived and executed.” —Review of Metaphysics “We owe a debt of gratitude to Chicago for this one-volume selection of essays from long ago, which still have the power to stimulate our minds today.” —Classics for All
Book Synopsis Negative/Positive by : Geoffrey Batchen
Download or read book Negative/Positive written by Geoffrey Batchen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its title suggests, Negative/Positive begins with the negative, a foundational element of analog photography that is nonetheless usually ignored, and uses this to tell a representative, rather than comprehensive, history of the medium. The fact that a photograph is split between negative and positive manifestations means that its identity is always simultaneously divided and multiplied. The interaction of these two components was often spread out over time and space and could involve more than one person, giving photography the capacity to produce multiple copies of a given image and for that image to have many different looks, sizes and makers. This book traces these complications for canonical images by such figures as William Henry Fox Talbot, Kusakabe Kimbei, Dorothea Lange, Man Ray, Seydou Keïta, Richard Avedon, and Andreas Gursky. But it also considers a number of related issues crucial to any understanding of photography, from the business practices of professional photographers to the repetition of pose and setting that is so central to certain familiar photographic genres. Ranging from the daguerreotype to the digital image, the end result is a kind of little history of photography, partial and episodic, but no less significant a rendition of the photographic experience for being so. This book represents a summation of Batchen’s work to date, making it be essential reading for students and scholars of photography and for all those interested in the history of the medium

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pursuit of happiness is universal. Most of us would like to experience more joy and elation. But when we feel like we are falling short of this ideal, we can often feel downcast. We may even see 'darker' emotional states, from sadness and anger to envy and anxiety, as character defects or serious illnesses. In fact, there is unexpected value in the emotions most of us see as 'negative'. In subtle ways, the more negative emotions can bring us to a richer state of wellbeing. For example, sadness can open our hearts to the fragile beauty of life, enabling us to appreciate what we would usually take for granted. While anger may seem unpleasant, if channelled well, it can be a great catalyst for change and improvement in society. THE POSITIVE POWER OF NEGATIVE EMOTIONS shows how the darker states of emotion are vital to a better understanding of ourselves and a more fulfilled life.

Download or read book Positively Triple Negative written by Eline Allaart and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-25 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -A memoir- I have cancer! Now what? Living on the beautiful Caribbean island of Curaçao, at twenty-seven years old, that was the question I had to ask myself. Out of the blue, I was hit with a life-changing diagnosis and as my "normal" life stood still, I hopped on the scariest roller coaster of my life. I invite you to join me on this ride and read inside my mind. The mind of an optimist-the glass-half-full-of-sarcasm kind. While the experience was bumpy and lumpy, it was also filled with epiphanies, cancer perks, friendship, family, gratitude, and hope. So, at definite risk of sounding like a Hallmark card, this is not a story of tragedy, instead it is one of triumph. This is a book about learning the hard life lessons and coming out of it more positive, empowered, and resilient than before. Better and balder* through it all.*okay maybe that was just me.
