Book excerpt: A counselor at one of the most innovative and renowned drug and alcohol treatment centers in the world introduces an empowering approach to addiction recovery that addresses the whole self—mind, body, and spirit This “useful and practical perspective on what you can do to recover from [addiction]” can replace or supplement 12-step programs—at any stage in your recovery (Allen Berger, Ph.D., author of 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery) Rewired is a new, breakthrough approach to fighting addiction and self-damaging behavior by acknowledging our personal power to bring ourselves back from the brink. Centered on the concept of self-actualization, Rewired will guide you towards not only physical sobriety, but a mental, emotional, and spiritual sobriety by learning to identify key principles within yourself, including authenticity, honesty, gratitude, and understanding a need for solitude. Rewired addresses the whole self; just as addiction affects every part of one’s life, so too must its treatment. By helping us to build a healthy space to support our own recovery, we can rewrite the negative behaviors that result in addiction. Usable in conjunction with or in place of 12-step programs, Rewired allows for a more holistic approach, helping to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you. Each section in Rewired includes: • Personal anecdotes from the author’s own struggles with alcoholism and addiction • Inspiring true success stories of patients overcoming their addictions • Questions to engage you into finding what is missing from your recovery • Positive affirmations and intentions to guide and motivate With all the variables, both physical and emotional, that play into overcoming addiction, Rewired enables us to stay strong and positive as we progress on the path to recovery. Rewired teaches patience and compassion, the two cornerstones of a new, humanist approach to curing addiction. Remember, addicts are not broken people that need to be fixed—they just have a few crossed wires.

Book excerpt: Because Madeline has a drinking problem and issues controlling her anger, she's sent away to Spring Meadows. It's not as fancy as it sounds-it's actually a pretty intense place. But there is a weekly movie night in town... where Madeline meets Stewart, who's at another rehab facility nearby. They fall for each other during a completely crazy time in their lives, and then sort of part ways. When Madeline gets out of rehab, she tries to get back on her feet, and waits for Stewart to join her. When he does, though, it's not the ideal recovery or reunion that Madeline dreamed of. Both of them still have serious problems. And Stewart's are only getting worse... True and insightful as only Blake Nelson can be, Recovery Road is a story about finding the right person at precisely the wrong time.

Yet seeking treatment for a struggling loved one is, for most people, a frightening and overwhelming prospect. Ending Addiction for Good offers a powerful message of hope. Drawing on their own histories of addiction recovery, authors Taite and Scharff examine the unique and highly successful treatment protocol practiced at the Cliffside Malibu Addiction Treatment Center. Using clear and direct language, they look beyond the limits of conventional treatment to show how creating an individualized, evidence-based, and integrated approach that targets the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - not just the addiction, can provide a sure path to recovery. In doing so, they empower both the addict and the families of addicts to begin their recovery. Ending Addiction for Good may well be the most important book dealing with alcoholism and drug addiction to come along in years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindfulness, the quality of attention that combines full awareness with acceptance of each moment, just as it is, is gaining broad acceptance among mental health professionals as an adjunct to treatment. Because at the heart of addiction is the fear of painful emotional states, addicts compulsively seek drugs and alcohol to avoid or escape emotional pain. Mindfulness, on the other hand, helps us develop greater acceptance and ease with life’s challenges, as well as greater self-compassion. Here, Dr. Lawrence Peltz, who has worked as an addiction psychiatrist for nearly three decades, draws from his clinical experience and on the techniques of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to explain the fundamental dynamics of addiction and the stages of the recovery process, and also gives us specific mindfulness exercises to support recovery.

This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the global economy is forecasted to shrink by 4.4 percent in 2020 (IMF 2020), the Egyptian economy is proving resilient to the immense human and financial costs caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic. This resilience is mainly explained by the successful implementation of the economic reform program since 2016 that provided more fiscal space to withstand the adverse impact of the COVID-19 crisis. However, that Egypt’s economy is holding up is also due to the rapid response and proactive measures to limit the impact of the virus that were implemented by the Egyptian Government since March 2020 (MPED 2020). These enabled the country to avoid a full lockdown policy (Figure 1). While Egypt posted negative economic growth rates from April to June 2020 at the height of the crisis, overall economic growth was still positive at 3.6 percent for fiscal year (FY) 2019/20. This estimate is only slightly lower than the initial projection of the impact of the pandemic on Egypt’s economy of an annual economic growth equal to 3.8 percent, as estimated by staff of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MPED) (Breisinger et al. 2020). The deviation between the early and final estimate can be mainly explained by the lower than expected growth rates in the manufacturing and health services sectors and the better than expected performance of the trade and transport sectors.

Book excerpt: My Journey: A Pathway to Recovery By: Oliver W. Joyner My Journey: A Pathway to Recovery invites the reader to journey with the author into a path of honesty, self-examination, and reflection. The purpose is to enable the reader to mirror themselves through the writer’s personal experiences and realizing that there is a path out of the darkness of abuse, neglect, and addiction that leads to God’s marvelous light of life and love. Transparency is what makes the story interesting. Throughout the land, men, women, boys, girls, young, old, rich, poor, white, and black are silently suffering from the pains, hurts, and disappointments that they constantly have. For so many, the thought of this only happening to them, continues to keep them confined to a spiritual, mental, and physical imprisonment. It is the author’s hope that his story in its transparency grants the reader permission to unlock the secret doors of their suffering.
