Book excerpt: Objective : The lack of diversity in the profession of athletic training is a concern as other healthcare professions increase. This research explores the influences and barriers that students perceive exist for choosing this profession and how race or ethnicity plays a role. Design and Setting : The study is a mixed methods research which is using a survey and interviews to provide data. The study is specifically looking at professional athletic training programs in the state of Missouri. Subjects: Undergraduate students currently enrolled in an accredited athletic training program in the State of Missouri. Measurements : Surveys were distributed and collected via Qualtrics and results were analyzed through a Kruskall-Wallis test and a Mann-Whitney U test. Interviews were transcribed and coded to determine common themes. Results : Significant differences were found between the responses of White and minority students on survey items related to college advisors, desire to help diverse patient populations, and a lack of role models in the profession. Conclusions : Policies related to the advising of potential athletic training students must be assessed to look at possible racial bias, and efforts to recruit diverse student populations should be a priority for athletic training education programs. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the lived experiences of recent racially and ethnically diverse athletic training graduates and factors that contributed to their successful completion of a professional athletic training program. To do this, a survey including the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education Student Inventory and random sampling interviews were utilized. Participants completed a survey, provided inventory scores and open-ended responses, and reflected on their academic experiences as athletic training students. A few participants were selected to complete an interview to further analyze their experiences. Participants included 43 recent racially and ethnically diverse athletic training graduates. Findings from the inventory results include statistical significance for average scores among racially and ethnically diverse athletic training graduates and BSAT or MSAT program types. Participants' open-ended survey responses and random sampling interviews identified themes for barriers faced, strategies used to overcome the barriers, and factors that attracted and retained the participants in their professional athletic training program. Examples of themes included a cultural disconnect, isolation, self-determination, and supportive peers and faculty.

Book excerpt: A critical look at the tension between the larger role of the university and the commercialization of college sports Unwinding Madness is the most comprehensive examination to date of how the NCAA has lost its way in the governance of intercollegiate athletics—and why it is incapable of achieving reform and must be replaced. The NCAA has placed commercial success above its responsibilities to protect the academic primacy, health and well-being of college athletes and fallen into an educational, ethical, and economic crisis. As long as intercollegiate athletics reside in the higher education environment, these programs must be academically compatible with their larger institutions, subordinate to their educational mission, and defensible from a not-for-profit organizational standpoint. The issue has never been a matter of whether intercollegiate athletics belongs in higher education as an extracurricular offering. Rather, the perennial challenge has been how these programs have been governed and conducted. The authors propose detailed solutions, starting with the creation of a new national governance organization to replace the NCAA. At the college level, these proposals will not diminish the revenue production capacity of sports programs but will restore academic integrity to the enterprise, provide fairer treatment of college athletes with better health protections, and restore the rights and freedoms of athletes, which have been taken away by a professionalized athletics mentality that controls the cost of its athlete labor force and overpays coaches and athletic directors. Unwinding Madness recognizes that there is no easy fix to the problems now facing college athletics. But the book does offer common sense, doable solutions that respect the rights of athletes, protects their health and well-being while delivering on the promise of a bona fide educational degree program.

It is now common to see in elementary school, high school, and university classrooms, not to mention boardrooms and factory floors, a mixture of ethnicities, races, genders, and religious affiliations. But these changes in academic and economic opportunities have not directly translated into an elimination of group disparities in academic performance, career opportunities, and levels of advancement. Standard explanations for these disparities, which are vehemently debated in the scientific community and popular press, range from the view that women and minorities are genetically endowed with inferior abilities to the view that members of these demographic groups are products of environments that frustrate the development of the skills needed for success. Although these explanations differ along a continuum of nature vs. nurture, they share in common a presumption that a large chunk of our population lacks the potential to achieve academic and career success.In contrast to intractable factors like biology or upbringing, the research summarized in this book suggests that factors in one's immediate situation play a critical yet underappreciated role in temporarily suppressing the intellectual performance of women and minorities, creating an illusion of group differences in ability. Research conducted over the course of the last fifteen years suggests the mere existence of cultural stereotypes that assert the intellectual inferiority of these groups creates a threatening intellectual environment for stigmatized individuals - a climate where anything they say or do is interpreted through the lens of low expectations. This stereotype threat can ultimately interfere with intellectual functioning and academic engagement, setting the stage for later differences in educational attainment, career choice, and job advancement.
