Book Synopsis Reimagining Britain by : Justin Welby
Download or read book Reimagining Britain written by Justin Welby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sets out a radical vision for 21st century Britain in this updated paperback edition. It is now three years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby's book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain. The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident – and thus badly – or deliberately. Welby explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public, and mental), housing and education. To these he adds family; the environment; economics and finance; peacebuilding and overseas development; immigration; and integration. He looks particularly at the role of faith groups in enabling, and contributing to, a fairer future. When so many are immobilized by political turmoil, this book builds on our past to offer hope for the future, and practical ways of achieving a more equitable society.
Book Synopsis Portraits, Painters, and Publics in Provincial England 1540-1640 by : Robert Tittler
Download or read book Portraits, Painters, and Publics in Provincial England 1540-1640 written by Robert Tittler and published by . This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first comprehensive study of post-Reformation provincial English portraiture, Robert Tittler investigates the growing affinity for secular portraiture in Tudor and early Stuart England, a cultural and social phenomenon which can be said to have produced a 'public' for that genre. He breaks new ground in placing portrait patronage and production in this era in the broad social and cultural context of post-Reformation England, and in distinguishing between native English provincial portraiture, which was often highly vernacular, and foreign-influenced portraiture of the court and metropolis, which tended towards the formal and 'polite'. Tittler describes the burgeoning public for portraiture of this era as more than the familiar court-and-London based presence, but rather as a phenomenon which was surprisingly widespread, both socially and geographically, throughout the realm. He suggests that provincial portraiture differed from the 'mainstream', cosmopolitan portraiture of the day in its workmanship, materials, inspirations, and even vocabulary, showing how its native English roots continued to guide its production. Innovative chapters consider the aims and vocabulary of English provincial portraiture, the relationship of portraiture and heraldry, the painter's occupation in provincial (as opposed to metropolitan) England, and the contrasting availability of materials and training in both provincial and metropolitan areas. The work as a whole contributes to both art history and social history: it speaks to admirers and collectors of painting as well as to curators and academics.

Download or read book Dostoevsky written by Rowan Williams and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rowan Williams explores the intricacies of speech, fiction, metaphor, and iconography in the works of one of literature's most complex and most misunderstood, authors. Williams' investigation focuses on the four major novels of Dostoevsky's maturity (Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Devils, and The Brothers Karamazov). He argues that understanding Dostoevsky's style and goals as a writer of fiction is inseparable from understanding his religious commitments. Any reader who enters the rich and insightful world of Williams' Dostoevsky will emerge a more thoughtful and appreciative reader for it.

This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of the Archbishops of Canterbury The idea of this book was suggested by the Guardroom at Lambeth, round which hang the portraits of Arch bishops of Canterbury from Arundel to Longley, the series being complete from Warham onwards. In the gallery leading to the Guardroorn are the portraits of the three last Archbishops, the picture of Dunstan, and the miniature of Sancroft, a case containing archiepiscopal coins, and another case containing the impressions made from archiepiscopal seals. In the absence of any reliable portraits before the time of Warham, the earlier Arch bishops can only be represented by the effigies on their tombs, coins, and seals, and by such pictures as those of Dunstan and Arundel, which, though of very doubtful authenticity as portraits, are included since they form part of the collection at Lambeth. The picture. Of Alphege is taken from an illuminated ms. By Osbem, who wrote within eighty years of the Archbishop's death. Book Synopsis Archbishop Ramsey by : Peter Webster
Download or read book Archbishop Ramsey written by Peter Webster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop Michael Ramsey’s archiepiscopate from 1961 to 1974 saw profound renegotiations of the relationship of the Church of England with its own flock, with the nation more widely, with the Anglican church worldwide, and with the other Christian churches. Drawing from unique source material in the Lambeth Palace Library archives and reproducing many original writings of Ramsey for the first time, this book explores key questions which surround Ramsey’s tenure. How did Ramsey react to the rapid hollowing-out of the regular constituency of the church whilst at the same time seeing sweeping changes in the manner in which the church tried to minister to those members? What was his role in the widening of the church's global vision, and the growing porousness of its borders with other denominations? And how did the nature of the role of archbishop as figurehead change in this period?
