Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Columbus: A Monograph Governor Fairchild: In behalf of the Historical Society, I have the honor - and it is a very pleasant duty - to thank you for your generous gift. Nothing you could bring us from the ancient kingdom where you have so ably represented our country, could be more acceptable to us. It is a present exactly in keeping with our endeavors during a whole generation. One by one have we hung up in our Picture Gallery the likenesses of our State pioneers, as well as of others famous each after his own fashion in our annals. But the grand link thus far lacking in the chain of our pictorial history, you were among the first to observe to be missing, and you have made haste to supply that missing link. In this labor of love you have followed the footsteps of an illustrious predecessor. When Jefferson was the American minister in Paris, about 1784, he engaged an artist to take the best copy possible of what passed for the most authentic Columbian likeness in existence, - the Medici portrait in Florence - and the original, as most critics think, of the present you bring us to-day. This painting was with Jefferson during his Presidency, and he writes about it as one of his chief jewels at Monticello in 1814. In his drawing room there, it hung the second among four portraits on the left as one entered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Christopher Columbus That which Columbus tells us about his studies is nearly all that we know about the mat ter. One of his letters to Ferdinand and Isa bella shows us that to the theories of the period he joined an experience of twenty-three years of navigation, that he had seen all the Levant, the Occ1dent and the North; that he had Visited Eng land and made several voyages to Lisbon and the coasts of Guinea. He also speaks himself of an excursion that he made to Chios, and of an expo dition to Tunis of which he was given charge by King Rena of Anjou. But of all these divers voyages we possess no pre01se information suf ficient to fix the dates, still less the Circum stances. His son does indeed state that Columbus was at Lisbon in 1470, but he neglected to go into. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Christopher Columbus "The Lord," says Christopher Columbus himself in his "Prophecies," written toward the end of his life, "has blessed me abundantly with the knowledge of marine things. Of the science of the stars he has given me that which would suffice; so also of geometry and arithmetic. Besides, he has granted me the mind and skill to draw globes and place upon them in their proper places the various cities, rivers and mountains. I have studied all sorts of writings: history, the chronicles, philosophy, and some other arts for which Our Lord quickened my intelligence and understanding." Book Synopsis The Creative Portrait by : Nick Fancher
Download or read book The Creative Portrait written by Nick Fancher and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go beyond the photographic conventions, break the rules, and create compelling portraits. While the ability to create a conventional, traditional portrait is a must-have skill for any photographer of people, it can often yield a fairly predictable result: a straightforward likeness of the subject, created with a flattering lens in flattering light with a flattering composition. The subject may be pleased with the results, but it's not a very interesting photograph. And in the constant, endless stream of images we consume daily, the portrait is likely forgotten as quickly as it appeared. A truly creative portrait comes from the two-sided exchange between the subject and the photographer, with both parties working together to create an image that goes beyond the simple representation of the subject. The end result is not an image that simply breaks the rules--it's an engaging photograph that both captures the essence of the subject and compels the viewer to stop and take notice. In The Creative Portrait, photographer and author Nick Fancher walks you through a plethora of ideas and techniques for making such creative work. Known for imagery that is bold, colorful, expressive, and widely varied, Nick has built a career by going against the grain. The result has been a consistent output of innovative and striking photographs. In this book, Nick will help you go beyond the conventional approach and explore the endless possibilities that come with intentionally breaking the rules. He'll teach you all about: -The gear he uses, and his overall approach to shooting -Why it's so important to practice photographing paper, plastic, and plants -Multiple long exposure techniques for creating unique and expressive images -Blocking, directing, and concentrating light with cookies, flags, gobos, and snoots -Shooting through glass for numerous creative effects -How he employs smoke, mirrors, and projectors in his work -And much more Throughout the book, Nick includes behind-the-scenes photos and diagrams of his shoots, as well as Lightroom post-processing techniques so you can follow along. He also includes over a dozen creative prompts to actively push you to go beyond your own comfort zone in your photography in order to create compelling portraiture.
