Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of Mary Queen of Scots: With an Historical Introduction and a Rare Portrait of the Queen Concerning this wave of feeling that has passed over the minds and thoughts of very many - this species of idolatry that has centred round the name of Mary Stuart, we are tempted to add another word. We would seek to account for the somewhat unreasonable veneration that has been displayed by supposing it to be the modern expression of sixteenth-century chivalry, or such a survival of it, under altered conditions, as it is still possible to retain in a world from which chivalric impulses are generally admitted to have fled. It is undeniable that an outlet must be found for this as for every other human aspiration, and recourse is therefore more frequently had to the creations of fiction rather than to the embodi ments of history. As a general rule, we would humbly submit that the historical portrait-gallery does not supply very many figures over which the mere lovers of romance are accustomed to linger. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, Vol. 1: Translated From the Original and Unpublished Ms. A few words regarding the portraits may not be out of place. The one given as frontispiece to the first volume was engraved, at the suggestion of Mr Albert Way, from the miniature, supposed to be by Janet, which is at Windsor Castle, and which, by the gracious permis sion of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, I have been allowed to copy. The fac - simile of Mary's autograph is from one of the letters in the Balcarres Collection, preserved in the Advocates Library, Edinburgh. The portrait given as frontispiece to the second volume is from the half-testoon of 1562. It was chosen on the recommendation of the author, after a most painstaking search for an authentic portrait. The fac-simile of autograph is from a safe-conduct granted by Mary to Moray in July 1565. The document is in the Register House, Edinburgh. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth and Mary Stuart: The Beginning of the Feud Mary Stuart's irresistible claims demand at least as large a share of my space as that devoted to the early reign and courtships of her rival on the English throne. Hence the present volume does not carry me so far as I had originally planned in the series in which I hope eventually to illustrate the history of England by means of contemporary letters. That I have not succeeded in steering an incontrovertible course in exploring the labyrinth of letters, written not only by the Queens themselves but also by those who helped to shape the destinies of both kingdoms in their day and generation, will surprise no one who has ventured to make an independent investigation of the documents of that embittered period. No other chapter in the whole history of the United Kingdom is so difficult to present in the form of an impartial contemporary narrative as that which introduces the hapless Queen of Scots, about whose mystifying personality the last word will probably never be written. If the whole truth about the first phase of her rivalry with Elizabeth, and the fatal mistake of her marriage with Darnley, may not be found in the following chapters, the letters at least reveal the various views which were taken at the time, and, above all, recreate the atmosphere of the age as only such documents can ever succeed in doing. "Letters and dispatches, like journals entered day by day," as Sir George Cornewall Lewis wrote in one of his essays, "have this advantage over memoirs, that they exhibit faithfully the impressions of the moment, and are written without knowledge of the ultimate result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Stuart, And, the Maid of Orleans Tn following translation of Man stuart is that by Joseph Mellish, who appears to have been on terms of intimate friendship with Schiller'; and mentions, in his preface, that he was commissioned to introduce this tragedy on the English stage. His version was made from the prompter's copy, before the play was published, and, like Coleridge's Wallenstein, contains many passages not found in the printed edition. These are distinguished by brackets. On the other hand, Mr. Molli sh omitted many passages which form part of the printed drama, all of which have been added. The translation, as a whole, stands out from similar works of the time (1800) in almost as marked a degree as Coleridge' s Wallenstein, and some passages exhibit powers of a high order; a few, however, especially in the earlier scenes, seemed capable of improvement, and these have been revised, but, in deference to the translator, with a sparing hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stuarts, Vol. 1 of 2: Being Illustrations of the Personal History of the Family (Especially Mary Queen of Scots) In Xvith, Xviith and Xviiith Century Art; Portraits, Miniatures, Relics, &C. From the Most Celebrated Collections In the following pages an attempt is made to illustrate the characters, the persons, and some of the surroundings of the principal members of this ill-fated house; and, incidentally, of their friends and foes, from the days of James V. Of Scotland down to those of Prince Charles Edward, in whose person the Stuarts may be said to have made their last appearance as a political force. Portraits, pictures, and personal relics have been chosen from royal, national, and famous private collections, every one bearing more or less an imprimatur of genuineness. Many of the originals are works of art of the highest quality, and some, it is believed, possess the additional interest of having never been reproduced before. As to the Stuart family, there seems to be, as Voltaire truly remarked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Mary, Queen of Scots, Vol. 2 of 2: Drawn From the State Papers; With Six Subsidiary Memoirs, Illustrated With Ten Plates of Medals, Portraits, and Prospects Mary's person, whatever might be her beauty, or her wit, _did not protect her throughout an envious reign. Soon after her birth, in an interview, between the queen-mother, and Sir Ralph Sadler, the English ambassador, the queen said, that it had been re ported her child was not likely to live but, you shall see, quoth she, whether that be true, or not; and therewith she caused me to go with her to the chamber, where the child was, and shewed her unto me, and also caused the nurse, to unwrap her out of' her clothes, that I might see her naked. I assure your majesty, it is as goodly a child, as I have seen of her age, and as like to live, with the grace of God It was Hamilton, Earl of Arran, the heir presumptive of the Scotish crown, who had thus spoken of the infant queen, as being unlikely to live; and whose intimation was thus disproved, by the queen-mother, a princess of great sense, as well as, of sound discretion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stuarts, Vol. 2 of 2: Being Illustrations of the Personal History of the Family (Especially Mary Queen of Scots) In Xvith, Xviith and Xviiith Century Art; Portraits, Miniatures, Relics, &C. From the Most Celebrated Collections The story of the man who was seen going out with his beagles on the morning Of the battle of Naseby has Often been quoted to show that the nation at large did not enter into the feud between the Crown and the Parliament; but whilst it is probable that, at the time, the issues at stake were not fully realised, and whilst it is certain that it was impossible for the rival parties to do justice to the leading men who took part in the struggle on either side, we can now see how vitally important it all was, and how heroic were the proportions Of the combatants. It adds greatly to the interest of this period of our history to know that, thanks to the portraiture Of Van Dyck and Samuel Cooper, we can see the living presentments of the men and women Of those eventful days. Accordingly I have selected several portraits by these great artists, Of which it may be said that they are invaluable as showing the characters of the originals, and delightful in themselves as works of art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Mary's Book: A Collection of Poems and Essays The reader will understand that the compositions of Mary Stuart which are brought together in this volume were all, with the exception perhaps of some of the Sayings at the end, originally written either in French or Latin. What the originals were like may be gathered partly from the facsimile reproductions which appear amongst the illustrations and partly from the Appendix No. VII, which gives one of the Essays in French, and shows the amount of altera tion which it underwent. For the general reader the translations, which are partially borrowed from Miss Strickland and are partially my own work, will pro bably give a better idea of Mary's inner life, the thoughts, moods, and feelings which swept over her throughout her troubled career, than would the some what illegible originals. The portrait which forms the frontispiece has been chosen as being perhaps the most pleasing likeness among those which are undoubtedly authentic. The other illustrations are facsimiles of original documents preserved in various public collections, the State Paper Office, the Bodleian Library, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the Imperial Library in St. Petersburg.
