Book Synopsis The Montaukett Indians of Eastern Long Island by : John A. Strong
Download or read book The Montaukett Indians of Eastern Long Island written by John A. Strong and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Montaukett were among the first tribes to establish relations with the English in the seventeenth century, until now very little has been written about the evolution of their interaction with the settlers. John A. Strong, a noted authority on the Indians of New York State's Long Island, has written a concise history that focuses on the issue of land tenure in the relations between the English and the Montaukett. This study covers the period from the earliest contacts to the New York Appellate Court decision in 1917—which declared the tribe to be extinct—to their current battle for the federal recognition necessary to reclaim portions of their land. Strong also looks at related issues such as cultural assimilation, political and social tensions, and patterns of economic dependency among the Montaukett.

Download or read book Yaphank written by Tricia Foley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for its sawmills and gristmills, Yaphank was established in 1726 on the banks of the Carmans River on Long Island. Called Millville until 1844, it was then named Yaphank, "bank of the river." Its two lakes mark the boundaries of the historic district, with Main Street winding between them. Though the mills are long gone, many of the period homes from the 18th and 19th centuries remain, illustrating the history of the village and those who lived there. From the early days of the American Revolution, patriots marched on the Tallmadge Trail, and later, its young men went to fight for the Union cause in the Civil War. In 1871, Suffolk County's first almshouse was built to take care of the less fortunate. As World War I rumblings were heard, nearby Camp Upton-- where Irving Berlin wrote the musical Yip, Yip, Yaphank--drew thousands of soldiers.

Download or read book St. James written by Geoffrey K. Fleming and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. James sits among a variety of old and intensely interesting communities that dot the north shore of Long Island, many of which date to the mid-1600s. After being named in the mid-1800s, it quickly became one of the hot spots that stars of the American vaudeville stage made their own. Built beside the homes of farmers and millers were hotels, a casino, and the mansions of the rich and famous, giving the community a fascination all its own--a fascination that is clearly captured in the pages of St. James.
