This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The porphyrins are an important class of naturally occurring macrocyclic compounds that play a very important role in the metabolism of living organisms. They have a universal biological distribution and were involved in the oldest metabolic phenomena on earth. Without porphyrins and their relative compounds, life as we know it would be impossible and therefore the knowledge of these systems and their excited states is essential in understanding a wide variety of biological processes, including oxygen binding, electron transfer, catalysis, and the initial photochemical step in photosynthesis. The objective of this volume is to present a full and critical spectral data coverage of the entire major fields relating to porphyrin isomers and expanded porphyrins, their precursors, catabolic derivatives, and related systems electronically.
Book Synopsis Expanded, Contracted & Isomeric Porphyrins by : J.L. Sessler
Download or read book Expanded, Contracted & Isomeric Porphyrins written by J.L. Sessler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-08-21 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The porphyrins are a class of naturally-occurring macrocycles and are ubiquitous in our world. As such, they have been called the Pigments of Life. This auspicious designation reflects their importance in numerous biological functions. Indeed, life as we understand it relies on the full range of biological processes that are either performed by or catalyzed by porphyrin-containing proteins. Chlorophyll-containing photosynthetic reaction centers in plants, for instance, convert light energy into chemical energy while producing oxygen along the way. It is this oxygen, evolved from photosynthesis, that is transported, stored, and reduced by heme-containing proteins in many organisms, including mammals. Not surprisingly, therefore, these molecules remain of fundamental interest to chemists and biochemists. Indeed, they continue to be intensely investigated by researchers world-wide. Inspired by the importance of the porphyrins, a new research direction has emerged in recent years that is devoted to the preparation and study of non-porphyrin polypyrrole macrocycles. Here, the principal objectives have been to generate completely synthetic systems that bear some structural resemblance to naturally-occurring porphyrin derivatives while being quite different in their specific chemical makeup. Within this context, three different research directions have evolved, namely those involving the syntheses of contracted, isomeric, and expanded porphyrins, respectively. It is the chemistry of these systems that is the subject of this book. Because of the newness of the field, the emphasis of this book will be on synthesis and characterization (all work on porphyrin isomers and much of that associated with expanded porphyrins has only appeared in the last 10 years). One chapter on applications has, however, been included. Also, in the context of the preparative portions of the text, some efforts have been made to explain why various porphyrin analogue targets are of interest.

This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 2416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth set of Handbook of Porphyrin Science.Porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their numerous analogues and derivatives are materials of tremendous importance in chemistry, materials science, physics, biology and medicine. They are the red color in blood (heme) and the green in leaves (chlorophyll); they are also excellent ligands that can coordinate with almost every metal in the Periodic Table. Grounded in natural systems, porphyrins are incredibly versatile and can be modified in many ways; each new modification yields derivatives, demonstrating new chemistry, physics and biology, with a vast array of medicinal and technical applications. As porphyrins are currently employed as platforms for study of theoretical principles and applications in a wide variety of fields, the Handbook of Porphyrin Science represents a timely ongoing series dealing in detail with the synthesis, chemistry, physicochemical and medical properties and applications of polypyrrole macrocycles. Professors Karl Kadish, Kevin Smith and Roger Guilard are internationally recognized experts in the research field of porphyrins, each having his own separate area of expertise in the field. Between them, they have published over 1500 peer-reviewed papers and edited more than three dozen books on diverse topics of porphyrins and phthalocyanines. In assembling the new volumes of this unique handbook, they have selected and attracted the very best scientists in each sub-discipline as contributing authors. This handbook will prove to be a modern authoritative treatise on the subject as it is a collection of up-to-date works by world-renowned experts in the field. Download or read book The Porphyrins V4 written by David Dolphin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Porphyrins, Volume IV: Physical Chemistry, Part B focuses on the physical chemistry of porphyrins, their precursors, catabolic derivatives, and related compounds. The book covers nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of diamagnetic and paramagnetic porphyrins and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy of chlorophylls and related systems. It also encompasses electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy of porphyrin pi cations and anions, porphyrin excited states, metalloporphyrins, hemoproteins, and hemes. This volume is organized into nine chapters and begins with an overview of NMR theory and the use of NMR spectroscopy to study diamagnetic porphyrins and paramagnetic metalloporphyrins. The discussion then shifts to the theory of ENDOR spectroscopy and the application of ENDOR spectroscopy to analysis of chlorophylls, ESR of pi cations and anions of porphyrins as well as porphyrin excited states, and electron paramagnetic resonance and Mossbauer spectra of hemoproteins. The reader is also introduced to ESR and the electronic structure of metalloporphyrins. A chapter on Mossbauer spectroscopy of iron porphyrins concludes the book. This book is a valuable resource for inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemists interested in the physical chemistry of porphyrins.
