Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2000 witnessed the 900th anniversary of the birth of Adrian IV, the only Englishman to sit on the papal throne. His short pontificate of four and a half years, distracted by crisis and controversy and followed as it was by an 18-year schism, could be judged a low point in the history of the papacy. The studies in this book challenge the view that Adrian was little more than a cipher, the tool of powerful factions in the Curia. This is the first large-scale work on Adrian since 1925, and is supported by a substantial appendix of relevant sources and documents in facing translation. Relations with the Empire, the Norman kingdom and the Patrimony are all radically reassessed and the authenticity of 'Laudabiliter' reconsidered. At the same time, the spiritual, educational and devotional contexts in which he was operating are fully assessed; his activities in Catalonia and his legatine mission to Scandinavia are examined in the light of recent research, and his special relationship with St Albans is explored through his privileges to this great abbey. These studies by leading scholars in the field, together with the introductory chapter by Christopher Brooke, reveal an active and engaged pope, reacting creatively to the challenges and crises of the Church and the world.

Book excerpt: "[...]lives in their proposed campaign." [6] The cardinal's interference in this instance in behalf of peace, seems not to have been crowned with the same success, as in Norway. King Sweno, a proud and obstinate man, lent a respectful, but callous ear to his arguments; and was equally impervious to the efforts of the ambassadors, whom Swercus also sent to prevent hostilities. The events of the war which followed brought condign punishment to each party: for Prince John, on[...]".

Book excerpt: Preface 4Chapter I 5Chapter II 14Chapter III 31Chapter IV 40Chapter V 51Chapter VI 60Chapter VII 73Chapter VIII 81Chapter IX 92The following sketch was written to supply what its author felt persuaded could not fail to interest his fellow Catholics in England; namely, some account of the only English Pope who ever reigned. In it he does not pretend to any novelty of research; but simply to present a connected narrative of such events in the history of Pope Adrian IV as have hitherto lain broken and concealed in old chronicles, or been slightly touched for the most part in an incidental way by modern writers. In the course of his sketch, the author has ventured to take part with Pope Adrian in some acts of his, which it is commonly the mode to condemn. Should his opinions in so doing not be deemed sound, he yet hopes that at least the spirit which inspired them - in other words, the spirit to promote the cause of practical rather than theoretical policy, as also of public order and legitimate authority, will deserve commendation. For the rest, the striking similarity between the difficulties which Pius IX in our day has to contend with, and those which Pope Adrian had to encounter in the twelfth century, should only lend the more interest to his story.- Richard Raby, Munich, May, 1849

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laudabiliter was a bull issued in 1155 by Pope Adrian IV, the only Englishman to have served in that office. Existence of the bull has been disputed by scholars over the centuries; no copy is extant but scholars cite the many references to it as early as the 13th century to support the validity of its existence. The bull purports to grant the right to the Angevin King Henry II of England to invade and govern Ireland and to enforce the Gregorian Reforms on the semi-autonomous Christian Church in Ireland. Richard de Clare ("Strongbow") and the other leaders of the Norman invasion of Ireland (1169–71) claimed that Laudabiliter authorised the invasion. These Cambro-Norman knights were retained by Diarmuid MacMorrough, the deposed King of Leinster, as an ally in his fight with the High King of Ireland, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pope Adrian IV: A Friend of Ireland From the Analecta Juris Pontificii; A Magazine on Theology, Canon Law, Liturgy, and History Pope Adrian Iv. was the only Englishman that ever sat in the Chair of Peter. His original name was Nicholas Breakspeare, and he was born (we may suppose in the early part of the twelfth century) at Langley, near St. Alban's, in Hertfordshire. He was inured to hardships from his youth, for his parents were of lowly condition. The history of his career, from a state of extreme poverty to the highest dignity in the world, that of Supreme Pontiff, is so fully sketched by his Eminence Cardinal Moran in Document No. 1 of the Appendix at the end of this book, that the matter need not be repeated here. As is usual in such cases there are always a few points of difference among historians. For instance, some say that it was in Paris the young Nicholas studied under Marianus, an Irishman. Others say that his mother survived him, and received alms from the Church of Canterbury. But these are matters which need not detain us at present. What is certain is that Pope Adrian IV. was a staunch defender of ecclesiastical rights, so that he did not hesitate to curb the pride even of a fierce Barbarossa. This is the man who has been so long calumniated as one of the greatest of Ireland's enemies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
