Book excerpt: William A. (Bill) Mitchell invented Pop Rocks Crackling Candy in 1956 as an attempt to create an instant carbonated drink. The fruit-flavored candy contained entrapped bubbles of carbon dioxide, which when released created tiny explosions with sound effects. As a research chemist at General Foods during the Pop Rocks heyday, Marvin J. Rudolph led a group assigned to bring Pop Rocks out of the laboratory and into the manufacturing plant. During that time, he was awarded six US patents based on Pop Rock production improvements, and one for Increda-Bubble, a popping bubble gum. Drawing on interviews with food technologists, engineers, marketing managers, and members of Bill Mitchell's family, Rudolph takes readers from the day Pop Rocks were invented to the present day.
Book Synopsis Candy Experiments by : Loralee Leavitt
Download or read book Candy Experiments written by Loralee Leavitt and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candy is more than a sugary snack. With candy, you can become a scientific detective. You can test candy for secret ingredients, peel the skin off candy corn, or float an “m” from M&M’s. You can spread candy dyes into rainbows, or pour rainbow layers of colored water. You'll learn how to turn candy into crystals, sink marshmallows, float taffy, or send soda spouting skyward. You can even make your own lightning. Candy Experiments teaches kids a new use for their candy. As children try eye-popping experiments, such as growing enormous gummy worms and turning cotton candy into slime, they’ll also be learning science. Best of all, they’ll willingly pour their candy down the drain. Candy Experiments contains 70 science experiments, 29 of which have never been previously published. Chapter themes include secret ingredients, blow it up, sink and float, squash it, and other fun experiments about color, density, and heat. The book is written for children between the ages of 7 and 10, though older and younger ages will enjoy it as well. Each experiment includes basic explanations of the relevant science, such as how cotton candy sucks up water because of capillary action, how Pixy Stix cool water because of an endothermic reaction, and how gummy worms grow enormous because of the water-entangling properties.

Download or read book Truth and Rumors written by Bill Brioux and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you first heard it, you couldn't believe it: Jerry Mathers, from TV's Leave It To Beaver, had been killed in Vietnam. Then word came that Abe Vigoda, the actor who played the curmudgeonly cop Fish on Barney Miller, was dead; and that Mikey, who would eat anything as the Life Cereal tyke, had eaten too many Pop Rocks and exploded. Besides exposing us to things we couldn't otherwise believe, television can convince us of things that never actually happened. But how did these outrageous TV legends get started? How did they spread from classrooms to boardrooms across North America and beyond? And, most important, what do these rumors, so quickly transformed into facts and common knowledge, reveal about our relationship to reality through the medium of television? Put in other words, what exactly is it that were doing when were dealing in these fabulous rumors—are we chasing after surprising truths or simply more incredible entertainment? To take one telling example: Jerry Mathers was not actually killed in Vietnam—but the basic sense of this lie wasn't far removed from the emotions factually expressed in the two-page spread of the faces of the dead in Time magazine. In the course of this compelling work—which is supplemented with interviews with many of the people implicated in these rumors—author Bill Brioux exposes the reality behind the many stories that currently circulate in our culture. Through these stories (both true and false), he sheds a revealing light on just what role these rumors play in contemporary society—and what role our society plays in regard to these rumors as well.
Book Synopsis How Engineers Create the World by : William S. Hammack
Download or read book How Engineers Create the World written by William S. Hammack and published by Bill Hammack. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over 200 delightful short essays Bill captures the creativity and impact of engineers. He talks of their spectacular achievements - jets, satellites, skyscrapers, and fiber optics - but draws his deepest insights from the everyday, the quotidian. He finds beauty, elegance and meaning in Ferris wheels, Tupperware, Slinkys, mood rings, waterless urinals and Velcro. Delivered originally on public radio between 1999 and 2006, each essay is a small slice of the world created by engineers. The essays also illuminate and inform about the important topics of our day by showing how intertwined engineering and technology are with terrorism, security, intellectual property and our cultural legacy.
Book Synopsis Manufacturing Tales by : Gary Alan Fine
Download or read book Manufacturing Tales written by Gary Alan Fine and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mouse in the Coke bottle, the promiscuous cheerleader, the exploding Pop Rocks candy, the Kentucky Fried Rat. If the ballad and the fairy tale were the archetypal folklore forms of an earlier age, such contemporary legends constitute the preferred narrative genre of the late twentieth century. In Manufacturing Tales, award-winning folklorist Gary Alan Fine presents a major new theory of the creation and diffusion of contemporary legends in modern society. While ballad and fairy tale arose in folk communities and spread through trade and migration, contemporary legends thrive in societies crosscut by varied communication channels and relatively open networks. By looking at the social-structural background, the performance context, the personality of the teller, and the content of the text, we gain insight into the formation, dissemination, and disappearance of these modern legends. Fine identifies sex and money as key themes in contemporary legends, reflecting the public's disguised attempts to deal with major contemporary preoccupations. From the AIDS crisis to fears of food contamination in restaurants, popular anxieties are reflected in folklore. As dramatic, moving, comic, and involving texts, contemporary legends build relationships among acquaintances and strangers; as depictions of the world that we face every day, they provide perspective on potential challenges; and as shared information, they elaborate a consensual understanding of reality.
