Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pondering Proverbs is not intended as a scholarly work, says author and pastor Tom Hinkle, but a labor of love. "I have tried to give some insight into what the Proverbs are telling us and have tried to give some practical thoughts about their teachings," writes Hinkle. "It has been a work that has given me a better understanding of the book of Proverbs, and I hope it will help others as they seek to know more about the wisdom God offers to each of us. "The grace of our Lord sustains us each day, and His wisdom guides us. I believe this study will help others learn to walk in God's wisdom and be a blessing to others. I hope others can be helped by what I have written, and that God will be honored." In this first of two volumes, Hinkle offers a comprehensive study of chapters 1-16 of Proverbs using the HEAR method (highlight, explain, apply and respond) popularized by Robby and Kandi Gallaty. Tom Hinkle has served as pastor of St. John's Bethel Baptist Church in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, since 2015, and previously served churches in Kentucky for thirty years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Proverbs is a cornucopia of practical wisdom on a variety of topics. The insights and truths covered in this book of ancient Hebrew Wisdom literature run the gamut including the nature of true wisdom and understanding, vices and virtues, relationships and roles, priorities, planning for the future, how to communicate, and how to manage one's resources. In recent decades, the book of Proverbs has increasingly become the focus of attention for Christians who wish to live lives more in tune with God's principles. In particular, Christian thinkers have begun to correlate biblical principles with the study of effective leadership. Yost examines the subject of godly leadership by using the book of Proverbs as his springboard. This is a scholarly, yet deeply devotional, study of the leader's priorities, the leader's plans, and the leader's speech. Once you have read this book, you will never look at the book of Proverbs or the subject of leadership the same way again.

Book excerpt: Empowers the preacher to understand the role of wise leader to which he or she has been called, and to claim that role with conviction and joy. Pastors are called to an exciting ministry of proclamation and leadership. That excitement, however, often turns to demoralization and burnout as pastors become increasingly uncertain of what their role is supposed to be. Competing claims by the congregation, the denomination, and society about who and what the pastor is supposed to be breed confusion and disappointment. Are they primarily managers? Therapists? Fundraisers? A way out of this confusion lies in reclaiming the biblical understanding of who the pastor is. One of the biblical roles within the pastoral vocation that often goes neglected is that of wise teacher or sage. Scripture presents as a model of pastoral leadership those who interpret the word and will of God for daily living. Especially in their preaching, pastors are called to help the congregation understand their place in God’s world. In this book, Alyce McKenzie lays out the four qualities of the wise teacher–the bended knee, the listening heart, the cool head, and the courageous voice–and encourages pastors to make each of these integral to their ministry and vocation. She goes on to demonstrate that the sermon is the prime opportunity to function in the role of wise teacher. She offers strategies for applying biblical wisdom to all areas of everyday life. The strategies include: (1) Preaching that is as sensory as life is; using imagery, metaphor, simile, and story to connect with people’s emotions as well as their intellect. (2) Preaching that uses first-person experiences without being narcissistic. (3) Preaching that teaches without boring. (4) Preaching on public, often controversial issues that minimizes defensiveness and maximizes dialogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the sayings in the biblical book of Proverbs are difficult to read in Hebrew, even for those who know this language well. A Proverb a Day in Biblical Hebrew is designed to help readers of all levels of Hebrew competence meditate on and understand the concise and sometimes enigmatic sayings found in the book of Proverbs. Each verse is presented on one page, which is marked with a day number (from 1 to 365) and a date (January 1 to December 31) so the book can be used as a daily reader or devotional. On each day's page, the verse for the day is divided into two halves, based on the fact that each of the proverbs in the book constitutes a poetic couplet consisting of two parts. After each poetic line, all the words it contains are laid out and glosses are provided. All verbs (including participles) are fully parsed. Finally, at the bottom of the page, an English translation of the verse from two pages earlier is provided. This allows readers who are struggling with the meaning of a given day's proverb, or those who wish to see one possible way it can be rendered, to flip the page and see a translation for it at the bottom of the next two-page spread. In this way, readers can choose to avail themselves of an "answer key" for any of the proverbs when they wish to, but they can also ignore this information (since it is located on the next two-page spread, there is no risk of accidentally seeing it while trying to puzzle through a proverb's meaning). A Proverb a Day in Biblical Hebrew helps readers who have studied Hebrew access the original text of a fascinating and well-loved portion of the Hebrew Bible. It offers readers a simultaneously academic and spiritual experience, walking them slowly and on a regular basis through difficult and enigmatic sayings that invite contemplative reading and sustained reflection.

Book excerpt: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” -Philippians 4:6-7 We are all familiar with the concept of prayer. We might not all actively pray in the same way, but we all know of and are familiar with the concept of prayer. Even if you only think of prayer as a means of expressing your hopes and fears, the act of prayer, or focusing your attention on situations that concern you, is a good thing because prayers do work. Prayer, rather than being on optional subject in the curriculum of living, should be a required subject in that we do not graduate into adequate human living without it. Prayer flows from a natural desire for a relationship with God. Anybody can pray, anywhere, at anytime, alone or with other people. Prayer can be short or long, prayer can cover any distance so we can pray for people on the other side of the world, it can be personal or impersonal. Prayer is a very versatile thing. This guide is built to teach you how to pray effectively as well as give you monthly bible scriptures to pray with. If you use this guide effectively you’ll take your prayers to a whole new level and your life will follow in the same direction. Prayer has been described by Emmet Fox, a Christian writer, as “The Golden Key” to harmony and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those Practical Proverbs is a verse-by-verse commentary on the book of Proverbs from a pastor’s perspective. It begins with an exploration of the authorship of Proverbs—most of which was written by King Solomon, with brief sections by Agur, the son of Jakeh, and the words of King Lemuel (from an oracle which his mother taught him). It proceeds to an explanation of the structure of Hebrew poetry, a list of some of the topics addressed in the book, and an outline of the book. The opening chapters of Proverbs (1–9) consist of longer “wisdom poems” on a variety of significant subjects. Most of the chapters of Proverbs consist of single-verse observations concerning many of life’s practical concerns (with occasional multiverse entries). The book concludes with the entries of Agur and King Lemuel and, finally, the classic alphabetic acrostic poem regarding the excellent wife. Because the book focuses largely on the wisdom and understanding, which find their origin in the fear of the Lord, it is among the most life-enriching books ever written. It is extremely important for anyone who longs for practical guidance in the many issues of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise Up! invites the reader to step up to the divine customer service desk and exchange self-sufficiency, self-absorption, self-indulgence, and self-protection for the four virtues of biblical wisdom: the fear of the Lord (faith), the listening heart (compassion), the cool spirit (self-discipline), and the subversive voice (moral courage). An invaluable resource for personal devotion, small group study, and sermon series, Wise Up! is a spiritual manual for navigating the twists and turns of an unpredictable life. The author mines the riches of the Bible's wisdom literature from Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, and the short sayings of the synoptic Jesus. The result is four guiding virtues that can keep our feet from stumbling on the journey to wisdom through the thorniest of paths. McKenzie, the author of several popular books for both clergy and laity, places her profound knowledge of biblical wisdom in conversation with the absurdities, pains, and joys of our everyday lives. She invites wisdom down from the pedestal to accompany the reader on his or her daily rounds. Reading this book, at the same time, soothes the soul and troubles the conscience. It deepens faith, fires compassion, cools destructive desires, and nudges the sleeping conscience awake.

Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book title of part 2 is Identity. The heart, mind, and will of God is that we as the peoples around the globe know who God is, understand the love of God in that He deeply and faithfully loves you without bias, and that God wants you to come to a place of sincere faith where you stop running from God and take responsibility for your sins right now! How do we get our identity in the first place? By faith in God (Heb. 11:1-6 and John 3:1-18). Henceforward, it is by faith, trust, and hope in the LORD Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8-10) by calling upon His holy name (Ps. 18:1-3), confessing (Rom. 10:9-17) and repenting (Prov. 28:13 and Matt. 4:17 and Mark 1:15) of your sins. True repentance (willfully and decisively forsaking our unholy anti-God thinking, believing, habits, speaking, and behavior) is the fear of the LORD in being sorry for your sins deliberately and turning to God asking for forgiveness while declaring with audible speaking that Jesus Christ is the living Son of God, raised from the grave on the third day. This is salvation, and it is free! Do you know my friend Jesus? Identity found in Christ and explained in Part Two helps us to answer the following critical questions that our teenagers and millions of peoples around the world are asking right now: Who am I? What is my identity? What is my name that no one seems to know or care about? Why was I even born in the first place? Why am I alive today? What's the point to my life, and what is my purpose? Where do I fit in? Where am I? Why should I keep living? Why should I care? Why should I not take all these drugs or slit my wrists/throat right now? Does anyone love me? Does anyone care about me? Does God see me? Does God care about me or love me? Where is God right now? The solution to our global identity crisis is found in the love of God through the cross of Jesus Christ. The power, grace, mercy, and compassion of Christ is the only solution that can even begin to answer the above listed identity questions. The identity scream is horrifying and real! Peoples around the world are screaming in their souls right now: "Just bring me to Jesus!" Only Jesus Christ can fill our souls. Not money, sex, drugs, alcohol, or anything in this world can save our souls from sin or fulfill us with true peace and happiness. Pray before and during the reading of Part Two. Ask God what He wants to do with and through your life (Luke 8:21 and Luke 9:23). Praise the LORD (Ps. 150:1-6).

Book excerpt: Every culture finds ways to pass along its wisdom from one generation to the next. Old Testament Wisdom literature - comprised of the books of Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and Wisdom - raises the big "questions for the people of Israel: Why do the righteous suffer? "Why do we die? What is the meaning of life? The book of Proverbs organizes memorable sayings that lead to insight and understanding about the world that can inform the way we live. Speaking universally of the human condition, it paints a poetic portrait of wisdom as it guides members of the community, especially the young, in how to get along in life.
