Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metal-ligand coordination of metallomacrocycles allows for the production of both discrete and infinite metallosupramolecular structures with high-degrees of complexity. In recent years, coordination-driven self-assembly has emerged as a powerful noncovalent synthetic strategy to build discrete supramolecular architectures with diverse coordination moieties such as a well-defined shape, size, and geometry. The dynamic features of the metal-ligand bonds result in structures with intriguing properties allowing for a diverse range of applications in host-guest chemistry, sensing, drug delivery and catalysis. This book provides a comprehensive summary of current research in metallomacrocycles. Starting with an introduction to metallomacrocycles constructed via coordination-driven self-assembly, the book then goes on to explore design principles and self-organization. Subsequent chapters then discuss examples of complex and functional metallosupramolecular systems based on metallomacrocycles such as chiral systems and mechanically interlocked architectures. Finally, the book discusses the applications of metallomacrocycles. An essential resource for students and researchers looking to design and construct new metallosupramolecular systems and extend their applications in biological and materials science.

Book excerpt: The book highlights recent prominent results in the domain of the synthesis of new polyoxometalates with a specific attention to polyoxothioanions, and provides some novelties and perspectives in selected domains such as magnetism, luminescence and nanochemistry, and macroions self-assembly in solutions. The case of OC one-potOCO syntheses often used and reported in POMs synthesis is studied in terms of more complex solution speciation processes related to highly dynamical situation connected to factors such as pH, ionic strength, reaction time, temperature, counterion nature, concentration of starting materials, presence of electron donors and redox potentials. The behavior of macroions (2nm-6nm size range) in solution is shown to be quite different from the simple ionic solution or colloidal systems (DebyeOCoHuckel model). Their self-assembling into a single-layered, spherical, hollow vesicle structure, namely the OC blackberryOCO structure, is clearly described. Examples of spin clusters with tunable interactions are given and single molecule magnets based on POMs are specifically tackled. Besides paramagnetic transition metal centres and lanthanoid ions encapsulated in archetypal lacunary polyoxoanions, magnetically functionalized Kleperates are described, their discovery tracing back nearly 15 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chirogenesis in Chemical Science is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the world of chirality and chirogenesis, guided by Victor Borovkov and Riina Aav, both internationally renowned experts on chirality. Chirality is a fundamental property of the universe and has significance in different organic/inorganic materials, living organisms, and human beings. The basic principle of chirality is existence of an object in two mirror image forms, which are not superimposable. This phenomenon is widely seen in various fields of knowledge including mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology and ranging in scale from galaxies to nuclear particles. In chemical science, chirality is generally associated with a single molecule or group of molecules, which symmetry properties belonging to the Cn or Dn point groups with the simplest example of sp3 carbon atom bonded to four different substituents. The dynamic processes of chirality generation, modulation, transfer, amplification, etc. are termed chirogenesis. This is a fast-growing and interdisciplinary field of research, which is widely seen in many natural systems (such as DNA double helix, the secondary alpha-helix structure of proteins, lipid membranes, saccharides, heme proteins, and other biological molecular objects) and various artificial systems. It is of prime importance not only for fundamental science but also for a number of practical applications in such areas as pharmacology and agrochemistry, perfumery and food industry, materials and polymer sciences, enantioselective catalysis and nonlinear optics, nanoscience and nanotechnology, molecular devices and chemical sensors, and others. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms and various influencing factors is of particular significance for smart control and further effective application of chirogenesis in chemistry.
