Book excerpt: The second edition of Ecological Forest Management Handbook continues to provide forestry professionals and students with basic principles of ecological forest management and their applications at regional and site-specific levels. Thoroughly updated and revised, the handbook addresses numerous topics and explains that ecological forest management is a complex process that requires broad ecological knowledge. It discusses how to develop adaptive management scenarios to harvest resources in a sustainable way and provide ecosystem services and social functions. It includes new studies on ecological indicators, the carbon cycle, and ecosystem simulation models for various forest types: boreal, temperate, and tropical forests. NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION Provides a comprehensive collection of sustainable forest management principles and their applications Covers new ecological indicators that can be applied to address forest environmental issues Includes all types of models: empirical, gap, and process-based models Explains several basic ecological and management concepts in a clear, easy-to- understand manner This handbook is intended for researchers, academics, professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students studying and/or involved in the management of forest ecosystems. Chapters 16 and 18 of this book are available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.taylorfrancis.com. Download or read book Site-quality Evaluation, Site-quality Maintenance, and Site-specific Management for Forest Land in Northwest Ontario written by Willard H. Carmean and published by Thunder Bay : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northwest Science and Technology. This book was released on 1996 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is directed toward the evaluation and classification of forest land in north-west Ontario for timber production, with the primary objective of providing tools for a quantitative evaluation of the capability of forest land to produce tree growth. The first few chapters describe methods for estimating forest site quality, including direct methods based on measuring site index from standing trees and indirect methods based on soil and topographic features. The manual also provides a complementary framework showing relationships between site quality, forest-landscape classification, and growth and yield. This framework accommodates other land values that are in addition to timber production. A final chapter suggests how application of this integrated framework can produce a diversified forest landscape having a spectrum of management intensities, a variety of site-specific silvicultural practices, and a variety of forest land values and uses.

Book excerpt: The Forestry Canada Modelling Working Group serves as a forum for scientists to discuss and exchange information on their modelling research: methodologies, progress, and problems. Most modelling relates to growth and yield, but modelling in other fields such as insects and diseases, hydrology, fire, climate and carbon cycling are also included. Speakers from outside Forestry Canada are invited to attend and talk about their research to give ForCan scientists an appreciation of the type and magnitude of research done in the Region. This report presents technical papers, model demonstrations and poster presentations, established reports, and a Working Group business section.

Book Synopsis Physiology of Woody Plants by : Stephen G. Pallardy
Download or read book Physiology of Woody Plants written by Stephen G. Pallardy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody plants such as trees have a significant economic and climatic influence on global economies and ecologies. This completely revised classic book is an up-to-date synthesis of the intensive research devoted to woody plants published in the second edition, with additional important aspects from the authors' previous book, Growth Control in Woody Plants. Intended primarily as a reference for researchers, the interdisciplinary nature of the book makes it useful to a broad range of scientists and researchers from agroforesters, agronomists, and arborists to plant pathologists and soil scientists. This third edition provides crutial updates to many chapters, including: responses of plants to elevated CO2; the process and regulation of cambial growth; photoinhibition and photoprotection of photosynthesis; nitrogen metabolism and internal recycling, and more. Revised chapters focus on emerging discoveries of the patterns and processes of woody plant physiology.* The only book to provide recommendations for the use of specific management practices and experimental procedures and equipment*Updated coverage of nearly all topics of interest to woody plant physiologists* Extensive revisions of chapters relating to key processes in growth, photosynthesis, and water relations* More than 500 new references * Examples of molecular-level evidence incorporated in discussion of the role of expansion proteins in plant growth; mechanism of ATP production by coupling factor in photosynthesis; the role of cellulose synthase in cell wall construction; structure-function relationships for aquaporin proteins
