Die politische Wissenschaft hat sich schon gefragt wozu wir diese erläuternden Grundlagen, wie Begriffe und Theorien benötigen und ist zu logischen und vernünftigen Erklärungen mit positiven Absichten gekommen, dass unsere Gesellschaft und unser praktischer Alltag sie essentiell benötigt, da wir ihn damit greifbarer und verständlicher machen. Dabei verschleiern wir diese ironischer Weise gleichzeitig bis zu solchen Dimensionen, dass wir jene unabdingbaren Gerüste und Strukturen anfangen zu entwerten, sie erscheinen uns so fern von der Wirklichkeit, dass sie mehr als mühsame und langweilige Hürde betrachtet werden als wie eine analytische Hilfe.

Ein Blick in die Literatur offenbart eine Vielzahl divergierender Theorieangebote, die sich in rasanter Geschwindigkeit auseinander bewegen. Das vorliegende Buch möchte diese Unübersichtlichkeit innerhalb der Theorieentwicklung reduzieren und einen Überblick über die politischen Theorien der Gegenwart liefern. Damit ein solches Vorhaben überhaupt gelingen kann, müssen im Vorfeld zumin dest die folgenden drei Fragen adressiert werden: Was ist politische Theorie? Existieren angesichts der Pluralität politischer Theorien plausible Auswahl kriterien, um die "relevanten" Theorieangebote identifizieren zu können? Welcher Zeitrahmen umfaßt die "Gegenwart"? Worin besteht-trotz der internen Divergenzen und Pluralisierungsten denzen - das Konstituierende für das Label "politisch"? Orientiert man sich zunächst an der Titulierung, dann lassen sich darunter jene Ansätze verste hen, die eine Theorie zum Objektbereich ,Politik' formulieren. Dies ist je doch so allgemein, um nicht zu sagen tautologisch, gefaßt, daß es kaum mehr als einen - sicherlich konsensuellen -Ausgangspunkt bezeichnet. Welchen "Gegenstand" der Begriff ,Politik' überhaupt adressiert, was Politik von an deren sozialen "Gegenständen" wie z. B. Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft oder Reli gion unterscheidet, ist bereits höchst umstritten (vgl. Lutz 1992: 17ff. ). Kann Politik überhaupt als solch ein eigenständiger "Gegenstand" verstanden wer den, oder ist Politik (bzw. das Politische) nicht vielmehr eine bestimmte Ei genschaft, Qualität oder spezifische Verbindung der genannten sozialen "Ge genstände" (Heller 1991)? Das Gemeinsame politischer Theorien könnte aber auch in der Methodik zu finden sein, die das "Politische" erschließt, selbst wenn dessen genaues Verständnis umstritten ist.
