Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: How is it possible to sustainably implement the ideas of the Right Livelihood Award – also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize” – in educational and teaching methods of learning as part of future-oriented teacher training? This book addresses this issue in the form of a combination of articles from both an academic and school-related point of view. Education researchers, subject educationalists, expert scientists and teacher trainers present exemplary formats with which prospective teachers can be qualified for the wide-ranging requirements imposed on them as part of globalization and internationalization. In the formats, the contents of Right Livelihood – especially questions concerning ecology, social justice and peace – are addressed in a manner that is age-appropriate and related to experience. Moreover they are dealt with in an interdisciplinary context. The objective is to jointly incorporate the subject of Global Learning as Part of Education for Sustainable Development in the teacher education course and to realize it directly at the chalk face.

This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on youth is a new series published by the partnership between the European Commission and the Council of Europe in the field of youth with the support of five countries – Belgium, Finland, France, Germany and the United Kingdom – and the Nordic Council of Ministers. Its purpose is to bring national youth policies closer together and to keep the largely European dialogue about key problems of national and supranational child and youth policy on a solid foundation in terms of content, expertise and politics. The series aims to act as a forum for information, discussion, reflection and dialogue on European developments in the field of youth policy, youth research and youth work. The conceptual strategy behind this series is meant to be critical and anticipative, reflecting European youth policies and their relevance for and impact on young people. It also highlights trends in the youth field that need innovative and forward-looking strategies. The series aims to contribute to the development and promotion of a youth policy and of a youth work practice that is based on knowledge as well as participatory principles. It is also intended to be a forum for peer-learning between member states of the European Union as well as of the Council of Europe. The plan is to publish Perspectives on youth at least once a year. This first issue focuses on “2020 – what do YOU see?”, featuring a futuristic perspective on the lives of young people across Europe and the wider world, based on research, social trends, policy planning, changing demography, employment prospects, sustainable development and security, among other things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book we present a selection of articles that critically deal with (internationally comparative) large-scale assessments. We acknowledge that studies such as PIAAC are often designed, financed and implemented on the basis of neo-liberal worldviews. Nevertheless, we would like to use the articles that are presented here to show the various ways in which adult and continuing education can benefit and learn from the knowledge that they generate. In PIAAC, for example, there are huge differences between the surveyed variables and the theoretical frameworks on literacies and literacy practices that the New Literacy Studies (NLS) have brought out. This book features eleven articles, which – with the NLS’s theoretical considerations and points of criticism in mind – find new and alternative evaluations and interpretations of the data. Not only can they show effects of marginalization on a large scale, but the data can also provide information about mechanisms of power in relation to literacy and basic competencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Ph. Backhaus applies the Model of Education Reconstruction (MER) to the context of a social accountability intervention in Cambodia. This book is not an evaluation but adopts a qualitative perspective on the learning approach applied by the researched intervention. The research found that the learning intervention does not systematically include learners’ pre-existing social knowledge. It would potentially benefit from systematically harvesting and reinforcing pre-held convictions to sustainably motivate participation. It does not address potentially sensitive topics while interviewees show a sophisticated and holistic understanding of these. Finally, there are inconsistencies between the program’s aims and objectives. In sum, the piloted approach offers pathways on how to beneficially include qualitative perspectives on similar development interventions.

"It is just the right moment for this guide!" Hubert Eckart, German Theater Technology Society In theatres, operas, orchestras and other cultural institutions, artists are constantly under pressure to deliver artistic excellence – despite adverse working conditions, personal challenges and interpersonal conflicts. In this book, theatre and mental coach Christina Barandun provides "first aid" with tips and practical exercises. She shows how artists in their complex, creative and chaotic workplace can better deal with stress and psychological strain, how they can strengthen their resources, their ability to communicate, and how to handle conflict. "Christina Barandun manages to pass on her well-founded specialist knowledge in a practical, lively and creative way. She sees the needs of the individual and does not lose sight of the 'big picture'." Tanja Krischer, German Theatre and Orchestra Association "An effective toolkit for working on and behind the stage." Katrin Reichardt, Aalto Musiktheater Essen "You learn more about yourself and how to deal responsibly with others." Wolfgang Heuer, German Occupational Health and Safety Insurance
