Furthermore, this research offers highly valuable, unique and comprehensive insights based on empirical evidence. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the format and its complexity. Overall, the findings give no clear indication that the involvement of former right-wing extremists in schools initiate civic education processes or prevent political extremism. Rather, the investigation found fundamental needs for additional research, modification, and sensitization. In this vein, this book makes a pioneer contribution to quality assurance and evaluation research in civic education and extremism prevention.

Book excerpt: Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has recently gained great popularity in German schools. Reports of teachers and pupils indicate that in bilingual lessons foreign language learning is perceived to be less artificial and far more motivating than in traditional language teaching. In contrast to conventional language learning CLIL emphasises subject specific contents. Although many teachers are not sure in which way English as predominant medium of instruction should be taught, most of the rather experimental attempts to do so are reported to be successful. Nevertheless, in some German states there neither is a curriculum, nor are there any recommendations specifically developed on the needs of different subjects taught in the integrated way. CLIL requires teachers to be strongly committed and to invest extra time and work to turn this relatively new concept into a success. But what is their motivation for establishing such learning environments? To find out about some of the reasons why CLIL is currently so successful in German schools, I examine the example of political education in Saxony and the extra benefits of CLIL when being taught in English.

Book excerpt: The essence of this book can be found in a line written by the ancient Roman Stoic Philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca: "Fortune is of sluggish growth, but ruin is rapid". This sentence summarizes the features of the phenomenon that we call "collapse," which is typically sudden and often unexpected, like the proverbial "house of cards." But why are such collapses so common, and what generates them? Several books have been published on the subject, including the well known "Collapse" by Jared Diamond (2005), "The collapse of complex societies" by Joseph Tainter (1998) and "The Tipping Point," by Malcom Gladwell (2000). Why The Seneca Effect? This book is an ambitious attempt to pull these various strands together by describing collapse from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint. In 2011 an invited research symposium of leading civic and political educators, social scientists and educational administrators from Europe met in Hannover, Germany to consider this key concern facing Europe today. In examining the above question the symposium addressed two significant issues: 1. Identify key competencies required for active citizenship of young people in Europe of the future. 2. Translate those competencies to school-based activities in the form of curricular and pedagogical strategies. The group addressed these questions through discussion in the symposium and through previously prepared papers. Subsequently the group participated in a modified Delphi Technique to identify the key competences and the final competences are presented in this book. The chapters of this book represent the contribution of the participants before, during and after the symposium with opportunities for review and reflection. Murray Print and Dirk Lange are professors from the University of Sydney and Leibniz University of Hannover respectively and are national leaders in civics and citizenship education in their respective countries. They have brought together a group of leading European civic and citizenship educators from different academic fields to explore the key issue and to identify the competences for young people to become active and engaged European citizens.
