Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a well-documented study of the structure, historical development, and present condition of the government of Nova Scotia. It deals with one of the oldest constitutions in Canada, one which was not created by statute but by the prerogative of the Crown. Nova Scotia has two major claims to priority in the history of Canadian politics: she was the first province to be granted representative institutions and the first to win responsible government. Owing in large measure to Joseph Howe's inspired leadership, the latter was achieved through peaceful, constitutional means. It is obvious that a study of the government of Nova Scotia must dig deep into the past, and Dr. Beck has investigated this early history with great care and thoroughness. This is followed by a study of the more recent period and the working of the government of our own time. The author demonstrates that the important changes, the interesting practices, and the colourful incidents have not all been in the distant past. There was, for example, the Legislative Council, that travesty on democratic institutions which lasted until less than thirty years ago. There was the odd phenomenon of a Liberal government in power for seventy out of ninety years since Confederation. There was the constant need to adapt parliamentary practices and institutions, developed under quite different conditions to the needs of a much smaller community, and one which was keenly aware of its heritage and very jealous of any serious interference. As a native of Nova Scotia and a political scientist, Dr. Beck has had a special interest in seeing how the Nova Scotian institutions of government evolved and how they work today. He has done a great deal of original research among primary sources and covered a field as yet uninvestigated by any other scholar. An admirable addition to the Canadian Government Series, of which it is the eighth volume, this is a book for serious students of political science and for students of Nova Scotia history.

Book excerpt: Who has held political power in Nova Scotia? How did they get it? And what did they do with it? In his latest book, best-selling author and former cabinet minister Graham Steele takes us on a roller-coaster ride through seventy-five years of Nova Scotia politics from 1945 to 2020. The story ranges from Angus L. Macdonald, who won a crushing election victory in 1945 after a bitter falling-out with prime minister Mackenzie King, to Stephen McNeil, who provoked the first-ever teachers' strike yet won the first back-to-back majorities in thirty years. It covers premiers from the calm intellectual Robert Stanfield, to the acerbic outsider Donald Cameron, to the aloof reformer John Savage, and highlights trailblazers like Gladys Porter, Wayne Adams, and Donald Marshall Jr. Nova Scotia politics has seen an almost unnatural focus on jobs, roads, and corruption. Steele doesn't shy away from the controversial parts of our political history: the trial of Gerald Regan for sexual crimes; the political pressure that led to the opening of the ill-starred Westray mine; and the environmental racism that pumped effluent into Boat Harbour for fifty years. This is a book for anyone interested in modern Nova Scotia history or politics. It's for the avid politics-watcher, of course, but also for the new voter, the newcomer, the new parent, the newly retired--anyone who wants some historical depth by which to understand today's politics. Steele pulls together the threads of history, adding original stories and archival research to the existing rich vein of historical writing, and then applies his own political experience to find the through lines that tie together past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: Published in 2000, this book offers a history of the reforms attempted by John Savage's Nova Scotia Liberal government in the mid-1990s, analyzing his successes and failures. The short period of Liberal government that began in Nova Scotia in May 1993 was a unique period where major reforms were attempted simultaneously in health, education, municipal structure and economic policy. Under the leadership of former Dartmouth mayor and family physician, John Savage, many popular ideas about reinventing government were given a real-life test. In this book four political scientists record and analyze the experience The Savage Years is a remarkable portrait of a courageous politician and of the challenges facing those who seek to reform traditional political cultures.

Book excerpt: Nova Scotia elected its first representative government in 1758. It was over 200 years later that the first woman, Gladys Porter, would take her seat at Province House. On Their Shoulders: The Women Who Paved the Way in Nova Scotia Politics tells the stories of the first fifty women to serve as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), detailing their journeys to office, the inequalities they overcame, the moments and achievements they are proud of, and the advice they give to today's young women. Co-authors Sarah Dobson and Grace Evans interviewed women who have served as an MLA in Nova Scotia, as well as the families of those who have since passed away. This book is a historic recollection of Nova Scotian politics with a gendered lens, filling an important gap in our history while inspiring young women to follow in their footsteps. The book began as an idea for a fundraiser, but became so much more. Alongside a successful crowdfunding campaign, the sales of this book will go towards the Women in Politics Scholarship at Dalhousie University. This scholarship will support the next generation of women-identifying students who aspire to a career in politics.
