Besides separate editions of the respective poets, I have used the following collections: T. Wright's Political Songs of England from the reign of John to that of Edward II, Political Poems and Songs relating to English History, composed during the period from the accession of Edward III to that of Richard III, and Political Ballads published in England during the Commonwealth; Chalmers' English Poets; Percy's Reliques; Poems on Affairs of State and State-Poems; The Loyal Garland; W. W. Wilkins' Political Ballads of the 17th and 18th centuries annotated; and The New Whig and New Tory Guides. Book excerpt: In the period of the American Revolution the colonies as a whole awakened to literary self-consciousness for the first time. Although native drama was still in its infancy and fiction not yet born, the literature of these years, surveyed by Moses Coit Tyler in his still valuable "Literary History of the American Revolution", reveals vigor and excellence throughout a wide range of genres familiar to the eighteenth century. An essential branch of this literature, scarcely better known today than when Tyler blazed the way long ago, is political satire. While literary and social historians have long recognized that personalities, issues, and events of the Revolution were held up to ridicule at the time, the present study is the first to explore this satirical record in detail. The focus throughout is on American aspects of the period 1763-1783, both intercolonial and international; so it is that most of the satires herein considered were written by Americans for Americans, so also that those treating of matters largely provincial or European in their implications are excluded. -- Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political satire has been a primary weapon of the press since the eighteenth century and is still intimately associated with one of the most important values of western democratic society: the right of individuals to free speech. This study documents one of the most important moments in the history of printed political imagery, when political print became what we would recognise as modern political satire. Contrary to conventional historical and art historical narratives, which place the emergence of political satire in the news-driven coffee-house culture of eighteenth-century London, Meredith M. Hale locates the birth of the genre in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands in the contentious political milieu surrounding William III's invasion of England known as the 'Glorious Revolution'. The satires produced between 1688 and 1690 by the Dutch printmaker Romeyn de Hooghe on the events surrounding William III's campaigns against James II and Louis XIV establish many of the qualities that define the genre to this day: the transgression of bodily boundaries; the interdependence of text and image; the centrality of dialogic text to the generation of meaning; serialized production; and the emergence of the satirist as a primary participant in political discourse. This study, the first in-depth analysis of De Hooghe's satires since the nineteenth century, considers these prints as sites of cultural influence and negotiation, works that both reflected and helped to construct a new relationship between the government and the governed.

Book excerpt: This book examines the multi-media explosion of contemporary political satire. Rooted in 18th century Augustan practice, satire’s indelible link with politics underlies today’s universal disgust with the ways of elected politicians. This study interrogates the impact of British and American satirical media on political life, with a special focus on political cartoons and the levelling humour of Australasian satirists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Politics and the English Language, the second in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell takes aim at the language used in politics, which, he says, ‘is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind’. In an age where the language used in politics is constantly under the microscope, Orwell’s Politics and the English Language is just as relevant today, and gives the reader a vital understanding of the tactics at play. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Book excerpt: In the past decade various studies have examined how political humor may influence various political attitudes and voting behavior; whether it affects learning, cognition and media literacy, how it might shape political participation; how people process different forms of political humor; and more. This book is devoted to anticipating and addressing where the field of political humor and its effects will move in the next generation of scholarship, exploring the continued evolution of the study of political humor as well as the normative implications of these developments. It includes research accounting for important changes and developments "on the ground" in the political humor landscape. These include the fact that the cadre of late-night television hosts have completely changed in the past 3 years; there are now more late night television choices; and many hosts have become more overtly political in their presentations. Recommended for scholars of communication, media studies, and political science.

Amber Day focuses on the parodist news show, the satiric documentary, and ironic activism to examine the techniques of performance across media, highlighting their shared objective of bypassing standard media outlets and the highly choreographed nature of current political debate.
