They are con cerned with the application of the Christian principles to our problems as citizens. For this reason I think they may have a more lasting interest than the problems of the moment. The Washington Disarmament Conference has come and gone: England has chosen the better way with Ireland at last but even these questions have not yet reached their final settlement, and those principles of Christianity which we have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Politics It seemed to involve the duty and necessity of endeavouring to bring the theory of political society more within the range of general education; of familiarising even young minds with some of those fundamental principles on which it ought to be con structed, and especially of Christianising it. For, like many other studies, the Science of Politics for some time past has been dealt with in a spirit essentially Heathen. Whether from an affectation of candour, or from a false confidence in powers of reasoning, or from coldness of heart, or from real practical infidelity disguised under the name of liberality, we seem to have consented to wave the very profession of Christianity in discussing the constitution of Society; and to treat it, as if we were at liberty to adopt the same method of ar gument as Aristotle or Plato - we who possess a Revelation, as they who had none. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Politics During the last year there has also been fresh recognition of religion as a force in political life; for a century and more there had been a tendency to wave it aside and discard it as no longer a matter of public concern. The persistence of the philanthropists was not indeed wholly forgotten, and Christianity was expected to interfere with the internal affairs of the nation, and to rouse the national conscience on such questions as the sweating of labour and the improvement of hons ing. Apart, however, from social reform, religion seemed to many men to be a matter of private concern, and no one regarded it as entering di rectly into the field of international politics. With the stress and anxiety of war all this is changed, and Christianity has taken its rightful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Politics and Religion in the Days of Augustine The following essay on Politics and Religion in the Days of Augustine takes up the story of the religious con flict in the Roman world from the year 395, the date of the death of Theodosius, and carries the narrative down to 430, the date of the death of Augustine. It covers the period during which Augustine, as an ofi'icial of the African Church, was a participant in the struggle, and since Augus tine in this capacity came to dominate the situation, his official career marks a distinct period. The earlier activi ties of Augustine naturally do not come within the scope of this survey, nor does it include any detailed examination of his position as a theologian. As far as possible, the author has confined himself to the distinctly historical aspects of the struggle through which the West became Christian and orthodox, and has presented this historical survey, for the most part, in the words of the original documents themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian State: The State, Democracy and Christianity This suggests a natural and important question: IS there any vital and necessary relation between these three great phenomena? Philosophy, we are told, is the art Of thinking things together. Is it possible for one to think together these three great facts, the State, de mocracy, and Christianity? These questions are among the most fateful questions Of the time, and upon their right solution depend a hundred Issues in man's life and progress. Through their neglect great loss has already come, and through their wrong solution great calamity may result. But these questions have hardly come, as yet, into the foreground Of human inquiry. Aspects of these phenomena have been considered, and each Of these great facts has been studied; but so far as I am aware no one has considered each fact in its relation to the others. The inquiry before us, it is believed, has a timeliness and a value for reasons which may be brie y stated. The signs Of the times indicate that the great strug gles Of the future are to be fought within the boundaries Of the State. Current movements in human society show impending changes in our social and political institutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In this incisive work, Sara Diamond expands our understanding of the Christian Right beyond what is commonly known about its electoral clout, shedding light on the rarely seen boundaries and intersections where politics and culture converge. The book examines the web of grassroots cultural institutions, including publishing houses, law firms, broadcast stations, and church-centered community programs, that have helped conservative evangelical groups maintain their influence for over two decades. Highlighting the movement's complex alliance with the Republican Party, Diamond provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the formation, organizing strategies, and heated internal debates of such powerful national organizations as Focus on the Family and the Christian Coalition. She offers a richly textured analysis of how the rubric of "family values" has been used to infuse evangelical beliefs into local and national discussions around such disparate issues as childrearing, gay rights, abortion, public education, and funding for the arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius's work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius's writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same time, owing to the depth of intellectual resources at his disposal, these works constitute a major contribution to the broader discussion of the relation between the religious and political spheres.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Politics The sermon lectures which are submitted to the judgment of the reading public in the following pages, were not written in the first instance with any thought of their ultimate publication. They were prepared by the author and delivered by him in the course of his duty as preacher to the congregation of which he is the pastor. Reports of the lectures were published in the daily press, which reports at tracted wide attention, and gave rise to much discus sion and contention. Because of this it seems wise to publish the discourses in full in order that the writer may be judged by the whole body of his thought, rather than by any selected portion of the same.
