Book excerpt: Paint & Polish finds visual inspiration in the microeconomic culture of Hispanic and African-American nail artists living in the Northwest Side of Chicago. Thriving on its own terms, their economy shares joy equally between client and producer. Jackie Blue, Loretta Gonzalez, Alexis, Yara Fernandez and Glynnus Alexander make up the core group of shop owners; the community of salons comprises mothers and daughters who have found long-term financial stability through craftsmanship and entrepreneurship. Included in this striking softcover volume are oral histories, conversations with the nail artists, and their portraits by Chicago based photographer Helen Maurene Cooper (b,1980). Download or read book The Polish Rider written by Ben Lerner and published by Mack. This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 2015, Ben Lerner wrote a short story, 'The Polish rider', incorporating fictionalized elements of the life and work of the artist Anna Ostoya, who had recently lost two of her canvases in the back of an Uber. As the narrator of the story helps the artist search for the missing canvases, he fantasizes about "recuperating the lost paintings through prose," about how the verbal might take the place of the visual. After the story was published in 'The New Yorker', Ostoya painted the painting Lerner had invented based on her earlier work, transforming the fiction without changing any of the words. Ostoya went on to produce a series of compositions that respond to the story she'd helped inspire. 'The Polish Rider' is the result of this ongoing conversation across media and genres. In addition to the story, this volume includes an essay by Lerner that describes how Ostoya's actual body of work catalyzed the fiction, as well as the contingencies and uncanny correspondences that have shaped their exchange. Ostoya's compositions -- both those that prompted Lerner's writing and those that take it up -- are never merely illustrative. Instead, they keep literature from having the last word. In this unclassifiable volume, the boundaries between fact and fiction, original and reproduction, text and image, flicker as you read and look.

Download or read book Young Poland written by Julia Griffin and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcasing the extraordinary achievements of the proponents of Polish modernism from the 1890s to 1918, this ground-breaking book brings together pioneering research with beautiful imagery. Mloda Polska, or Young Poland, embraced the integration of fine and applied arts, motivated by a desire to establish a distinctive national style at a time of political uncertainty. Patriotic values were expressed through a diverse visual language that was fuelled by national identity, but also looked beyond Poland to Western Europe and the influences of Impressionism, Expressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, while also displaying parallels with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. Young Poland's painting has been discussed within an international arena, but its decorative arts and architecture has yet to enjoy broad exposure. Here, for the first time, the considerable achievements of the movement's applied artists will be discussed, both from a national and international perspective. Highlighting Young Poland's integration of fine and decorative arts, the movement's ideological, stylistic and formal commonalities with British Arts and Crafts, and the vision of Ruskin and Morris, will be drawn out to provide fascinating insights for Western and Eastern audiences alike.
