Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual debts which I have incurred in the preparation of this study are many. Foremost, I wish to express my warm appreciation and gratitude to Professor Henry L. Mason for his sound advice, gentle encouragement, and continuous guidance. In addition, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Professors David R. Deener, Warren RobertsJr. and John L. Snell for their critical comments and helpful suggestions which led to frequent and fruitful reconsideration of the substance and form of the inquiry. I am also very grateful to Professor J. W. Smurr who made many constructive suggestions with regard to the content and style of the manuscript. A special debt is owed to Mr. Jon Reinhardt who read the manu script in its entirety and suggested a number of stylistic improvements. Richard Paulig, former Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Ger in New Orleans, La., was most helpful by assisting in the col many, lection of certain source materials, and the staff members of the Bundestag library in Bonn, Germany, under the direction of Bibliotheksoberrat Dr. Heinz Matthes aided the research for this study with outstanding efficiency. Finally, my most heartfelt expressions of gratitude are re served for my wife, Betty, whose encouragement and sympathetic understanding have helped me through this work.

Book excerpt: The Basic Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) for the first time provided a framework for the exchange of permanent missions and laid the foundation for expanded bilateral cooperation between the two German states. This book charts the progress of inner-German relations in the formative years of the 1970’s and explains how the revival of the German question in the l980's followed from striking changes in East and West German priorities and policies. Dr. Plock assesses the degree of practical cooperation in such areas as trade, travel, and the exchange of media representatives and also identifies the impact of Soviet interests on the inner-German relationship. Dr. Plock notes that despite a clear upgrading in FRG-GDR relations under Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt, inner-German progress continues to be hostage to the overall East-West political and security climate. Yet the author sees a bipartisan West German commitment to partnership with the GDR as well as East Berlin's pragmatic approach to the relationship as stabilizing features of the European political landscape, even though the goals of future "Deutschlandpolitik" will continue to remain ill-defined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-researched book details the ambiguity in British policy towards Europe in the Cold War as it sought to pursue détente with the Soviet Union whilst upholding its commitments to its NATO allies. From the early 1950s, Britain pursued a dual policy of strengthening the West whilst seeking détente with the Soviet Union. British statesmen realized that only through compromise with Moscow over the German question could the elusive East-West be achieved. Against this, the West German hard line towards the East (endorsed by the United States) was seen by the British as perpetuating tension between the two blocs. This cast British policy onto an insoluble dilemma, as it was caught between its alliance obligations to the West German state and its search for compromise with the Soviet bloc. Charting Britain's attempts to reconcile this contradiction, this book argues that Britain successfully adapted to the new realities and made hitherto unknown contributions towards détente in the early 1960s, whilst drawing towards Western Europe and applying for membership of the EEC in 1961. Drawing on unpublished US and UK archives, Britain, Germany and the Cold War casts new light on the Cold War, the history of détente and the evolution of European integration. This book will appeal to students of Cold War history, British foreign policy, German politics, and international history.
