Children with autism are challenged by the most essential human behaviors. They have difficulty interacting with other people-often failing to see people as people rather than simply objects in their environment. They cannot easily communicate ideas and feelings, have great trouble imagining what others think or feel, and in some cases spend their lives speechless. They frequently find it hard to make friends or even bond with family members. Their behavior can seem bizarre. Education is the primary form of treatment for this mysterious condition. This means that we place important responsibilities on schools, teachers and children's parents, as well as the other professionals who work with children with autism. With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975, we accepted responsibility for educating children who face special challenges like autism. While we have since amassed a substantial body of research, researchers have not adequately communicated with one another, and their findings have not been integrated into a proven curriculum. Educating Children with Autism outlines an interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. The committee explores what makes education effective for the child with autism and identifies specific characteristics of programs that work. Book excerpt: Children living in poverty are more likely to have mental health problems, and their conditions are more likely to be severe. Of the approximately 1.3 million children who were recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits in 2013, about 50% were disabled primarily due to a mental disorder. An increase in the number of children who are recipients of SSI benefits due to mental disorders has been observed through several decades of the program beginning in 1985 and continuing through 2010. Nevertheless, less than 1% of children in the United States are recipients of SSI disability benefits for a mental disorder. At the request of the Social Security Administration, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children compares national trends in the number of children with mental disorders with the trends in the number of children receiving benefits from the SSI program, and describes the possible factors that may contribute to any differences between the two groups. This report provides an overview of the current status of the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, and the levels of impairment in the U.S. population under age 18. The report focuses on 6 mental disorders, chosen due to their prevalence and the severity of disability attributed to those disorders within the SSI disability program: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and mood disorders. While this report is not a comprehensive discussion of these disorders, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children provides the best currently available information regarding demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and expectations for the disorder time course - both the natural course and under treatment.

Book excerpt: Children with autism have a unique pattern of cognition along with a different system for learning that spans the lifetime of the individual with autism. As a result, they often need an increased level of support and supervision throughout middle school to function successfully. The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the perceptions of parents, students, and school leaders regarding policies and practices in middle schools serving the needs of children with autism. The literature that informed this study included research on school environment, program design, support services, collaborative planning, and a review of past research. Autism was added to the list of protected disabilities in 1990 with IDEA. While some schools have established policies and supportive inclusive environments, schools have limited experience including students with autism in the regular education classroom. The problem is that schools are at various developmental stages of implementing this federal mandate. This problem is compounded by the dramatic increase in the number of students identified with autism. This study uses qualitative methods to explore the perspective of the school leaders, parents, and students directly involved in the planning and implementation of policies and program practices. Interview questions were designed around four embedded areas of analysis: inclusive school environment, program design, support services, and collaborative planning processes. Data were gathered from four middle school sites. Multiple methods of analysis were used to identify broad concepts and common themes. In summary, this study demonstrates the need for school leaders to establish and nurture inclusive school environments where all students are embraced, high standards are set, and a commitment is made to on-going staff development. This study demonstrates that the leadership dynamics on the IEP collaborative team is directly impacted by the limited knowledge base of the team. There is a need for mandated staff development if educators are to be expected to make effective programming decisions and work productively with adolescent students with autism. This study further demonstrates that adolescent children with autism have similar needs for social and emotional development as typical adolescent children but require additional support systems.
