Book excerpt: This book deals with electrical, electrochemical, structural, magnetic, optical and lattice dynamical properties of conjugated polymers such as polyaniline, polyacetylene, polydiacetylene, polypyrrole, polyparaphenylene and polythiophene. Several new conjugated systems and model polyenes are also considered. Since the previous winter school on this topic held in 1985, the focus of interest in the field has broadened and now covers not only conductivity and relaxation phenomena of polyacetylene but also nonlinear optical properties, highly oriented and single crystal polymers, and electrochemical and opto-electrochemical properties of special materials. Particular attention is paid in this volume to the possible applications of these systems, for example, in electrochemical cells as electrode materials and in nonlinear optics devices, which now appear to be much more realistic than previously. The detailed contributions are complemented by short reviews of thin film polymers (Langmuir-Blodgett layers), filled polymers, ferromagnetic polymers, superconducting low-dimensional systems (including organic superconductors and high-temperature superconductors) and the application of fractal models to polymers.

Book excerpt: With the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, research into polarons and bipolarons has attracted much attention. This book is the first standard reference to give a comprehensive view of the polaron and bipolaron theory of high-temperature superconductivity, one of the most significant discoveries in physics in the past decade. Scientists have also observed polarons and bipolarons in magnetic semiconductors and transition metal oxides. The thorough investigation of these nonsuperconducting materials has contributed greatly to our basic understanding of the physical properties of both polarons and bipolarons. This book contains a series of authoritative articles on the most advanced research on polarons and bipolarons in high-temperature superconductors and related materials. This book will be of great interest to researchers in condensed matter physics, and especially those working in the field of superconductivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current understanding of electronic, optical and magnetic properties of conjugated polymers in both the semiconducting and metallic states. It introduces in particular novel phenomena and concepts in these quasi one-dimensional materials that differ from the well-established concepts valid for crystalline semiconductors. After a brief introductory chapter, the second chapter presents basic theore tical concepts and treats in detail the various models for n-conjugated polymers and the computational methods required to derive observable quantities. Specific spatially localized structures, often referred to as solitons, polarons and bipolarons, result naturally from the interaction between n-electrons and lattice displacements. For a semi-quantitative understanding of the various measure ments, electron-electron interactions have to be incorporated in the models; this in turn makes the calculations rather complicated. The third chapter is devoted to the electrical properties of these materials. The high metallic conductivity achieved by doping gave rise to the expression conducting polymers, which is often used for such materials even when they are in their semiconducting or insulating state. Although conductivity is one of the most important features, the reader will learn how difficult it is to draw definite conclusions about the nature of the charge carriers and the microscopic transport mechanism solely from electrical measurements. Optical properties are discussed in the fourth chapter.

Book excerpt: This volume concentrates on the controversy within the scientific community over how to explain, understand and describe the photophysics/photochemistry of this class of materials. This controvery is of such a fundamental nature that the solution of the problem might be in a unification of the semiconductor and metal physics with the molecular quantum chemistry. Thus, a wide-ranging and comprehensive discussion of this very crucial issue has not been written down yet. This volume brings together the most prominent scientists specializing in this controversial topic. Each contributor addresses the opponents' arguments. After short introductory chapters, the contributors discuss their own speciality area and compare the results with both models and explain their position on why one of the models is more appropriate. Special emphasis is given to comparative discussions with other conjugated molecular systems as well as inorganic semiconductors. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanism of the high-temperature superconductors has been a very important topic in condensed matter physics. Researchers have been trying to explain the role of electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in cuprates. Some important properties of the cuprates could not be explained by conventional BCS theory. This book contains the experimental and theoretical studies on the EPI. The experimental part covers the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), isotopic effect, elastic neutron scattering study of electron-phonon, lattice role and so on. The theoretical part covers the electron-phonon, polaron and bipolaron, effect of lattice, fine structure in the tunnelling spectra of electron-doped cuprates, identification of the bulk pairing symmetry in high-temperature superconductors.Students and researchers interested in high-temperature superconductors, especially the EPI in cuprates will find this title very useful.
