Book excerpt: A previous note reviewed methods for the paramagnetic doping of materials for spin-polarized solid targets and some of the history of attempts to apply those methods to hydrocarbons. Since the earlier work on hydrocarbons had yielded, at best, rather mediocre results, that note also speculated on some ways to extend and, possibly, to improve upon the earlier work. The sharpest focus was on the light (number of carbons less than six) alkanes, since these are the hydrocarbons that have the highest hydrogen contents ([approx gt] 17wt %) and therefore require the least degree of polarization to be interesting. This present note summarizes the subsequent work done, to date, exploring some of the issues related to the chemical doping method. The main areas of progress have been in the literature search, experimental results on glass formation by alkanes, and a polarizing test of a prototype'' hydrocarbon.

Book excerpt: Polarized targets using dilution refrigerators have several advantages over targets of He3 cryostats for some polarization experiments. One of the advantages is in the long nuclear spin lattice relaxation time in quite low temperatures. It permits holding the target polarization in a magnetic field different from the polarizing field. Another merit is in the fact that one can obtain higher polarization in a dilution refrigerator than in a He3 cryostat, especially in the case of deuterons. These facts suggest various applications of the target with a dilution refrigerator, such as a spin-frozen target for spin-rotation parameter measurements, a target for spin effects in inelastic scattering, high polarized deuteron target, and so on. Furthermore, one can hopefully make a highly polarized HD target with further improvements of the dilution refrigerator. The possibility of the solid hydrogen polarization is also discussed. Finally, the principle of the dilution refrigerator and the special features of the refrigerator for the polarized target are briefly described. 7 figures.

These techniques are applied to unpolarized and polarized images. In the spatial domain, we consider Fisher's ratio (FR) and probability density function-based Fisher's ratio (PDF-FR). A comparison is drawn based on the outputs of these two methods. PDF-FR test is shown to have better target detection ability when compared to the FR. In the frequency domain, we consider fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation (FJTC) and wavelet filter-based joint transform correlation (WJTC). A comparison is drawn based on the output of these two methods. The WJTC technique involves more computational complexity but may provide better performance for some scenarios. Performance metrics which are obtained due to change in background color and textures using the FJTC and WJTC techniques are compared.
