Download or read book Polar Bears written by IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group. Working Meeting and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar arctic. Together with the previous 13 proceedings, they provide an historic record of international efforts in protecting, studying and managing polar bears. With recent documentation of how warmer arctic climate might affect the sea ice habitat of polar bears, the predictions of even warmer climate in the next decades, and documentation of effects on polar bears subpopulations, an evaluation of the red list status of polar bear subpopulations was followed by an increased conservation designation of vulnerable. In the complexity of possible interactions between climate change, local harvest, and in some areas high levels of pollutants, an increased level of international cooperation was advocated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar arctic. Together with the previous 12 proceedings, they provide an historic record of international efforts in protecting polar bears from over-harvest and document more recent concerns of threats arising from increased human activities in both the Arctic and in regions far beyond the realm of polar bears. More proactive management is needed to address limitations in the knowledge of population dynamics. New information indicates that the greatest future challenges to polar bear conservation may be ecological change in the Arctic due to climate change and pollution. The complex, global nature of the issues requires international cooperation and development of diverse, new approaches to address them.

Book excerpt: These 15th Proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar Arctic. Together with the previous 14 proceedings, they provide an historic record of the international effort in protecting, studying, and managing polar bears. The document addresses more recent concerns of threats arising as a consequence of increased human activities in both the Arctic and in regions far beyond the Arctic. Previous proceedings included a Status Report for each of the world's subpopulations, which focused largely on the known or unknown status as it related to harvest. In the Status Report of the 15th Proceedings, we provide a more comprehensive assessment of all threats to the status of each polar bear subpopulation.

Download or read book Polar Bears in Northwest Greenland written by Erik W. Born and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rationale for this survey was the indication that the catch of polar bears in Northwest Greenland had increased since the early 1990s, simultaneously with marked changes in weather conditions, sea ice cover, and glaciers. Building on information provided by 72 polar bear hunters living in Greenland's towns of Qaanaaq and Upernavik, this study offers important discussions about polar bear biology, polar bear catch, climate change, and the effect of these changes on the polar bears. The survey also presents the demography of the catch of polar bears in the area during 1952-2005, described on the basis of 588 catches.
Download or read book False Alarm written by Bjorn Lomborg and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times-bestselling "skeptical environmentalist" argues that panic over climate change is causing more harm than good Hurricanes batter our coasts. Wildfires rage across the American West. Glaciers collapse in the Artic. Politicians, activists, and the media espouse a common message: climate change is destroying the planet, and we must take drastic action immediately to stop it. Children panic about their future, and adults wonder if it is even ethical to bring new life into the world. Enough, argues bestselling author Bjorn Lomborg. Climate change is real, but it's not the apocalyptic threat that we've been told it is. Projections of Earth's imminent demise are based on bad science and even worse economics. In panic, world leaders have committed to wildly expensive but largely ineffective policies that hamper growth and crowd out more pressing investments in human capital, from immunization to education. False Alarm will convince you that everything you think about climate change is wrong -- and points the way toward making the world a vastly better, if slightly warmer, place for us all.

Book Synopsis Best Practice Guidelines for the Re-Introduction of Great Apes by : Benjamin Beck
Download or read book Best Practice Guidelines for the Re-Introduction of Great Apes written by Benjamin Beck and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2007 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the website: Although the IUCN has previously established working protocols for plant and animal re-introduction, the great apes present unique challenges and concerns owing to their singular cognitive development. This prompted the Primate Specialist Group to reconsider the existing guidelines in terms of the specific needs of great apes. The resulting synthesis, representing the expert opinion of primatologists and re-introduction practitioners, is presented here as part of the series of best-practices documents. Specifically designed for rehabilitators and specialists in re-introduction, these guidelines start from the fundamental assumption that re-introductions should not endanger wild populations of great apes or the ecosystems they inhabit. Equally important is the health and welfare of the individual great apes being re-introduced, as well as the caretaker staff and the residents of the surrounding areas. The re-introduction guidelines also require that the factors which first threatened great apes in the proposed site of release have been addressed and resolved.
Book Synopsis African Elephant Status Report 2002 by : J. J. Blanc
Download or read book African Elephant Status Report 2002 written by J. J. Blanc and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2003 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African elephant is the largest living land mammal, and their potential impact on their habitats raises important management issues both for protected areas and unprotected land. This Status Report, derived from data contained in the African Elephant Database, is rich in data and information on numbers, distribution and current issues, and provides continent-wide information that is vital for conservation. It will help wildlife management authorities to harmonize their policy and management decisions across regions, as well as the continent, to reduce conflict and relax the pressure on habitats.
