Book excerpt: An acclaimed natural history writer follows the trail of the remarkable hummingbird all over the world. Hummingbirds are a glittering, sparkling collective of over three hundred wildly variable species. For centuries, they have been revered by indigenous Americans, coveted by European collectors, and admired worldwide for their unsurpassed metallic plumage and immense character. Yet they exist on a knife-edge, fighting for survival in boreal woodlands, dripping cloud forests, and subpolar islands. They are, perhaps, the ultimate embodiment of evolution's power to carve a niche for a delicate creature in even the harshest of places. Traveling the full length of the hummingbirds' range, from the cusp of the Arctic Circle to near-Antarctic islands, acclaimed nature writer Jon Dunn encounters birders, scientists, and storytellers in his quest to find these beguiling creatures, immersing us in the world of one of Earth's most charismatic bird families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully drawn comic book inspired by Japanese manga and Indigenous art and legend This powerful story about a brave hummingbird shares a message of environmental stewardship Hummingbirds have long been a symbol of wisdom and courage. In this breathtaking book, a hummingbird makes a valiant effort to put out a raging fire that threatens her forest home. She makes many trips over the burning woodland because her tiny beak can only hold one drop of water at a time. Her efforts show the other creatures in the forest that doing something—anything—is better than doing nothing at all. Will they join her in her fight to save their home? The hummingbird parable, which originates with the Quechuan people of South America, has become a talisman for environmentalists and activists worldwide committed to making meaningful change. This retelling, enlivened by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’ fabulous Haida-Manga illustrations, is suitable for all ages of would-be activists. Although environmental responsibility often seems like an overwhelming task, The Flight of the Hummingbird shows how easy it is to start and how great the effect could be if everyone just did what they could.

Book excerpt: Like most people my activities and social life was impacted by Covid.I try to find things to do to fill up my day and to fill up my mind since our movement and freedoms have become so restricted. My husband bought me a real nice camera phone so I discovered that I love to take pictures . We would take the dog for a car ride. I would take along my camera phone and I would snap pictures through the car window as we sped dawn the highway. I think I invented a new technique. Works well for people that are mobility challengedI have a great love for birds. My husband set up feeders outside our picture window to attract hummingbirds. I would spend my mornings watching them.I have lots of time to watch them now. I learned a lot about hummingbirds just by watching them. I would use my new camera and take picture after picture of them. When I wasn't watching them I was reading about them. It gave me more pleasant things to think about.I decided to write a book because I want to share my joy of watching one of Gods miracles in their daily lives. It is a small book. It is under 40 pages. I used the pictures I took of the hummingbirds and I wrote what I learned from my own experience.
