Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ukraine, Poland and Russia and the Right of the Free Disposition of the Peoples It would be a grave error to regard the struggle of the Poles and Russians against the Ukrainians as a result of the European war, or to seek the explanation of it in Bolshevism. The world war has only served to crystal lize the relations between the Russians, Ukrainians and Poles, and when Russian Bolshevism appeared on the scene the war between these nationalities had been in existence already for a long While. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign in Russian Poland The capture of the important town of Lemberg, the capital of GaHcia, by the forces of the Tsar during the first week of September may be said to have marked an epoch in the operations of the gigantic armies contending for the mastery in what had come to be popularly known as the Eastern Theatre of operations in the world-war. It was a very sohd advantage, and one which gained for the Russian Army a substantial foothold upon Austrian territory. I. Does Russia mean to keep her word? II. Does Poland really believe that Russia means to keep her word? These two unanswered queries seem to be the main stumbling-blocks to a fair, generous and logical appreciation by Great Britain of the part being played by the Polish Nation in the present war. "The Polish Question" has been written across the face of Europe since a century and a half, written in capitals but, as it were, in invisible ink which the fire of war has now suddenly brought to sight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon's Campaign in Poland, 1806-7: A Military History of Napoleon's First War With Russia; Verified From Unpublished Official Documents There is, it is true, an outline of it in Alison's History of Europe but that is hardly sufficient for the student of military history, and there is no good general map attached to it. Sir Robert Wilson's account of it is not available in every library, and it is not very accurate in many respects. The English text-books on military history, as a rule, scarcely allude to the campaign. The brief sketch of it in Adams's Great Campaigns is, unfortunately, marred by inaccuracies and misprints. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Poland Yes, we did regard the accomplished facts as not final. As much as we could, we did stick to our belief, expressed in the song to which no Pole ever listens sitting, the song; Poland Is Not Yet Lost. And when this war broke out, within a few weeks we had a declaration from the Russian commander-in-chief, a declaration that the partition of Poland had been a great wrong. And now you see all the three powers declaring that each one of them is going to give Poland happiness, to restore Poland. The Polish question is not dead; it is not buried. Fif you speak of Poland today, you may mean any one of four things. First of all, you may mean the old empire, the empire as it existed in 17 7 2, the empire which had been created by the union between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 17 72 Poland extended from a point near Berlin almost to Kief, and reached very close to the Black Sea. Secondly, you may mean by Poland, not the whole of Poland, but only what is usually called the Congress-king dom, that is, the kingdom created by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the part which is now usually referred to as Russian Poland. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 took away from Prussia part of what had been assigned to her in 1795 and formed this into what is now called Poland, that is to say, Russian Poland. The summer of I_ 3. What I then saw and learned led me to make a study of the history of the country and of the then existing circumstances of the Poles in Prussia, Russia, and Austria. I found the subject one of great interest, and one which by some strange oversight has been much neglected by English writers. The upheaval of Europe by the war has brought Poland once more to the attention of the public, and it is in these circumstances I venture to issue this volume. I do so in the hope that it may arouse fresh sympathy for this very gallant nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Polish Problem In the first days of August, 1914, when the Germans crossed the frontier of Russian Poland and occupied Kalisz, they dis tributed a proclamation promising to the Poles freedom from Russian oppression, and independence, if the war ended favour ably to German arms. The German proclamation was undated, but evidently printed a long time before its distribution. On the 10th of August the commander of the Austrian Northern Army distributed a proclamation to the Poles. The Austrian proclamation did not give any definite promises, but expressed a h0pe that the Russian Poles would help Austria; and that the Poles, relying on the goodwill always shown to them by the Hapsburg monarchy, might be sure that their attitude would be rewarded. On the 14th of August the commander-in-chief of the Russian army, Grand Duke Nicholas, issued a proclamation to the Poles, expressing the hope that Austrian and German Poles would help Russia, and containing the following words: The Russian Army brings you the solemn news of reconciliation, which obliterates the frontiers dividing the Polish people, and unites them con jointly under the sceptre of the Russian Tsar. Under this sceptre Poland will be born again, free in her religion and in her language. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays and interviews by Polish, British, and American academics and journalists provides an overview of current Polish politics for both informed and non-specialist readers. The essays consider why and how PiS, Law and Justice, the party of Jarosław Kaczynski, returned to power, and the why and how of its policies while in power. They help to make sense of how “history” plays a key role in Polish public life and politics. The descriptions of PiS in Western media tend to rework old stereotypes about Eastern Europe that had lain dormant for some time. The book addresses the underlying question whether PiS was simply successful in understanding its electorate, and just helped Poland to revert to its normal state. This new Normal seems quite similar to the old one: insular, conservative, xenophobic, and statist. The book looks at the current struggle between one ‘Poland’ and another; between a Western-looking Poland and an inward-looking Poland, the former more interested in opening to the world, competing in open markets, and working within the EU, and the latter more concerned with holding onto tradition. The question of illiberalism has gone from an ‘Eastern’ problem (Russia, Turkey, Hungary, etc.) to a global one (Brexit and the U.S. elections). This makes the very specific analysis of Poland’s illiberalism applicable on a broader scale.

Book excerpt: Translated by Cynthia Klohr After crushing the Polish Uprising in 1863–1864,Russia established a new system of administration and control. Imperial Russian Rule in the Kingdom of Poland, 1864–1915 investigates in detail the imperial bureaucracy’s highly variable relationship with Polish society over the next half century. It portrays the personnel and policies of Russian domination and describes the numerous layers of conflict and cooperation between the Tsarist officialdom and the local population. Presenting case studies of both modes of conflict and cooperation, Malte Rolf replaces the old, unambiguous “freedom-loving Poles vs. oppressive Russians” narrative with a more nuanced account and does justice to the complexity and diversity of encounters among Poles, Jews, and Russians in this contested geopolitical space. At the same time, he highlights the process of “provincializing the center,” the process by which the erosion of imperial rule in the Polish Kingdom facilitated the demise of the Romanov dynasty itself.
