Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland as a Geographical Entity Different races of men have different characteristics, which allow us to distinguish one race from another. One race has straight hair, another has curled hair; one has a broad head, another has a long, head; one has blue eyes, another black. We may class men according to their physical characteristics. We may go farther and differentiate individual men according to their differences. No two men, even of the same race, are exactly alike. By making an inventory of their physical characteristics every man might be differentiated from every other. A somewhat similar method has been applied to geographical regions. These have been studied and classified. Certain similarities have been found. This, that, and the other are mountainous and rainy; other regions are flat and dry. They obviously fall into different groups corresponding, we may say, to the different races of men. Regions have also been studied and analysed. An inventory has been made of their characteristics so that the points in which they differ from other regions may be noted. No one region is exactly like another, any more than one man is exactly like another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland, the Unknown Of all the questions presented for settlement to the Congress of 1919, none was more momentous than that of Poland. Civilization has had to defend itself against Germany - a Prussified Germany. For forty years before the Great War Germany had been penetrated, hypnotized, dominated, possessed, by the evil spirit of Prussia. But the fabric of Prussia was originally reared on the ruins of Poland. Prussia only existed as a real power in Europe because, and when, Poland had ceased to exist. The Polish question is the Prussian question on its reverse side. Whatever Governments may say or do, the feeling of the peoples who have suffered from the Hohenzollerns is Delenda est Borussia. But the cry "Down with Prussia" is equivalent to the demand "Up with Poland." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The summer of I_ 3. What I then saw and learned led me to make a study of the history of the country and of the then existing circumstances of the Poles in Prussia, Russia, and Austria. I found the subject one of great interest, and one which by some strange oversight has been much neglected by English writers. The upheaval of Europe by the war has brought Poland once more to the attention of the public, and it is in these circumstances I venture to issue this volume. I do so in the hope that it may arouse fresh sympathy for this very gallant nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
