Book excerpt: Introduction in poetry: nature of poetry, tools, history, terms (periods, styles and movements, technical means, tropes, measures of verse, verse forms, national poetry... Poetry (ancient Greek: ποιεω (poieo) = I create) is traditionally a written art form (although there is also an ancient and modern poetry which relies mainly upon oral or pictorial representations) in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. The increased emphasis on the aesthetics of language and the deliberate use of features such as repetition, meter and rhyme, are what are commonly used to distinguish poetry from prose, but debates over such distinctions still persist, while the issue is confounded by such forms as prose poetry and poetic prose. Some modernists (such as the Surrealists) approach this problem of definition by defining poetry not as a literary genre within a set of genres, but as the very manifestation of human imagination, the substance which all creative acts derive from.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invention of the Kaleidoscope is a book of poetic elegies that discuss failures: failures of love, both sexual and spiritual; failures of the body; failures of science, art and technology; failures of nature, imagination, memory and, most importantly, the failures inherent to elegiac narratives and our formal attempt to memoralize the lost. But the book also explores the necessity of such narratives, as well as the creative possibilities implicit within the “failed elegy,” all while examining the various ways that self-destruction can turn into self-preservation.

Of all the subjects he picked, PURGATORY was the challenge he chose. This poem was an extreme challenge due to the complexity of the subject, and from that poem on, the rest just blossomed.

Let this book be your companion when seeking to have some me-time and to chill out in your own chosen surroundings. Or, discuss Mallory’s poems in more depth with others. Poetry can truly dazzle and serves as an equal alternative to the excitement of reading novels. The beauty of poetry is the choice given to read any extract to another appropriate age group that can introduce them into this wonderful genre of literature. Similar to music, the titles stay with the reader and will, in virtual speak, stamp its date and location to induce its messages across the wide spectrum of what everyone likes to imagine or likes to encounter. Poetry is the perfect treat or gift for anyone who would like to travel on a magic carpet away from the madding crowd. Soothe yourself instead - in contrast to an edge of seat thriller novel or film. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: DIV“A fresh, revelatory, golden eagle’s eye-view of western literature.” —Financial Times/divDIV Early in Grammars of Creation, George Steiner references Plato’s maxim that in “all things natural and human, the origin is the most excellent.” Creation, he argues, is linguistically fundamental in theology, philosophy, art, music, literature—central, in fact, to our very humanity. Since the Holocaust, however, art has shown a tendency to linger on endings—on sundown instead of sunrise. Asserting that every use of the future tense of the verb “to be” is a negation of mortality, Steiner draws on everything from world wars and the Nazis to religion and the word of God to demonstrate how our grammar reveals our perceptions, reflections, and experiences. His study shows the twentieth century to be largely a failed one, but also offers a glimpse of hope for Western civilization, a new light peeking just over the horizon./div

There to be pleased, while angels sing. But I am homo sapien: (Able to know right from wrong) I, alone, pay for my own sin. D'Antone Buovo has always loved God first and women second. Now in the third act of his long life, Buovo shares a remarkable, lyrical journey into the mind of a sagacious and tired old soul. Buovo relies on his diverse life experiences while exploring a wide range of human emotions. In his poems, Buovo provides a glimpse into his varied experiences with romantic love, lust, loss, betrayal, longing, and spiritual devotion through playful narratives, verse that reflects life lessons, and meaningful dialogue with God. Kaleidoscope shares one man's viewpoint of his world and beyond as he reflects on his life, love, and betrayal.

Book excerpt: Will Lyza’s 1968 summer mystery lead to . . . pirate treasure? When Lyza helps her dad clean out her late grandfather’s house, a mysterious surprise brightens the sad task. In Gramps’s dusty attic, Lyza discovers three maps, carefully folded and stacked, bound by a single rubber band. On top, an envelope says “For Lyza ONLY.” What could this possibly be? It takes the help of her two best friends, Malcolm and Carolann, to figure out that the maps reveal three possible spots in their own New Jersey town where Captain Kidd (the Captain Kidd, seventeenth-century pirate) may have buried a treasure. Can three thirteen-year-olds actually conduct a secret treasure hunt? And what will they find? In a tale inspired by a true story of buried treasure, Jen Bryant weaves an emotional and suspenseful novel in poems, all set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War during a pivotal year in U.S. history.

She is the author of "Because All Is Not Lost" from Modern History Press and the co-author of "Whispering Woes of Ganges & Zambezi" (Cyberwit 2010). Her work has appeared in six countries across three continents. Sweta has held recent artist residencies and workshops in Portugal, Ireland, and several within USA. She is a graduate of Columbia University. "In this innovative series, Sweta Srivastava Vikram re-appropriates color. Cultures and mythologies collide along the way, and the result is a chapbook that feels like a quest. In the end, the colors are a map to identity. The child's pink tonsils or the bride's red sari are not symbols, but rather mile markers. Like Vikram's poems, they lead toward understanding" --Erica Wright, Senior Poetry Editor, "Guernica" About the Chapbook The book delves into the implication and philosophy of colors from a Hindu woman's point of view, from birth until death. The color she adorns herself with almost depicts the story of her life. Expressed through different poetic and verbal forms, each color in the book has its own tone and is specific to different age groups. Book excerpt: Kaleidoscope is a collection of prose and poetry that takes a glimpse at our lives, reflecting back our dark secrets as well as our beautiful dreams. Just as a real kaleidoscope emerges in a collage of ever-changing colorful patterns, the flowing poetry in Kaleidoscope changes its words, portraying a stained glass image of our lives. The words continually float from dark to light, exposing a prism of our inner fears and hopes. The entire collection is about how different situations in our life affect each of us, says author E.J. Barnett. "I am inspired by the spirit within, simplicity and children." Her words evoke images that will stay with you long after the last page is read. "E.J. Barnett stands far from the tenebrous poetry of this generation. She brings light to her pages and makes us feel better about our future." - Bobby Dews, writer in residence at Andrew College, Cuthbert, Georgia, and former Atlanta Braves coach "Intriguing for lack of a better word. E.J. speaks with a clear inner voice on the reflections of life." - Ralph W. Hill, Airport Operations Manager, Landside, Port of Oakland, Aviation Division, Oakland, California "The words of E.J. Barnett are vivid, moving and draw me in. Her work is insightful and awakens all my senses." - Kim Parker, MSPT (master's in science physical therapy) E. J. Barnett of Phoenix is a flight attendant. Her next book is titled The House That Jack Built, the Hen House, a collection of short stories based on her childhood. "I grew up with ten sisters and two brothers (hence the title), in rural Phoenix in the forties and fifties." http: //sbpra.com/EJBarnett
