Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly best book of 1995! Dr. Michael Guillen, known to millions as the science editor of ABC's Good Morning America, tells the fascinating stories behind five mathematical equations. As a regular contributor to daytime's most popular morning news show and an instructor at Harvard University, Dr. Michael Guillen has earned the respect of millions as a clear and entertaining guide to the exhilarating world of science and mathematics. Now Dr. Guillen unravels the equations that have led to the inventions and events that characterize the modern world, one of which -- Albert Einstein's famous energy equation, E=mc2 -- enabled the creation of the nuclear bomb. Also revealed are the mathematical foundations for the moon landing, airplane travel, the electric generator -- and even life itself. Praised by Publishers Weekly as "a wholly accessible, beautifully written exploration of the potent mathematical imagination," and named a Best Nonfiction Book of 1995, the stories behind The Five Equations That Changed the World, as told by Dr. Guillen, are not only chronicles of science, but also gripping dramas of jealousy, fame, war, and discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathered from scrapbooks, diaries, book margins and disk drives, this collection charts the author's life from boy to man, from travels to Africa, from young family to middle age. The predominant themes of spiritual path and scientific rationale are set in emphatic rhythms and rhymes. The tone is sometimes sombre - prophecy does tend to be gloomy- but patches of bright sun shine in the poems Sparrows Chirping and From the Farm, which delight in the appreciation of Nature. Many of the poems employ dream images and words. In the humorous On Our Way to Mali, and in the challenging Quantitative Analysis, the colour, light, situation and sound of the dream world creates the poem. Poems, Equations and Prophecies has only a few poems with equations embedded in the verses. These should not distract the student of literature any more than the student of mathematics should be distracted by religious symbols. They stimulate the other senses as much as imagery and alliteration, but may require some background reading to fully appreciate. Poems, Equations and Prophecies describes visions interpreted using contemporary ideas and techniques. The poem I saw you twice relies on the teachings of Carlos Castaneda to lend meaning to bizarre, real-life events. One Foundation Trilogy questions the value of prophecy in modern society. More rational means are available to help humanity choose its way through crisis, as in Isaac Asimov's classic novels. The Besht comes to help uses the analytical method of Carl Jung to interpret a kabbalistic vision of the Heavenly Chariot. Seeds of this discovery are apparent throughout the earlier poems, particularly in RESUME. Lastly, what collection would be complete without an enduring love song? Two Worlds is at heart a love poem written to the author's wife. With inconsistent equations inspired by Gödel's Theorem and a prophetic connection with September 11th, this poem will intrigue the poet reader and test the mathematician for time to come.

Few only know that he also was a gifted thinker and poet. Sun Ra's poetry leaves everything behind what's called contemporary, and flings out pictures of infinity into the outer space. These poems are for tomorrow. This is the only edition of Sun Ra's complete poetry and prose in one volume. The Contributors James L. It introduces readers to twenty-six different mathematical communities and addresses important questions about how they form, how they thrive, and how they advance individuals and the group as a whole. The chapters celebrate how diversity and sameness bind colleagues together, showing how geography, gender, or graph theory can create spaces for colleagues to establish connections in the discipline. They celebrate outcomes measured by mathematical results and by increased interest in studying mathematics. They highlight the value of relationships with peers and colleagues at various stages of their careers. Together, these stories offer a guide—rather than a template—for building and sustaining a mathematical community. They call attention to critical strategies of rotating leadership and regular assessment and evaluation of goals and programs, and promote an ongoing awareness of the responsibilities of life that impinge on mathematical creativity and contributions. Whether you are giving thought to starting a group, joining one already in existence, or encouraging a colleague to participate in the broader mathematical community, this book will meet you where you are—and move you beyond. It contains a plethora of ideas to foster a sense of belonging in the exciting discipline of mathematics.

Book excerpt: 'Mansoulié here demonstrates his talent for communicating physics to non-scientists, his target audience for this brief, readable, volume.'CHOICEThe book comprises 15 short chapters, each presenting an important equation of Physics, from the simplest and oldest, to more complex and recent ones. The target audience is the interested general public, hence no mathematics is involved (beyond the simple expression of each equation). What can a professional 'read' in an equation? Does one see a rainbow differently when one knows the law of refraction of light? Do some equations tell more than what they were invented for? The book presents an opportunity to think about the nature of the physical laws (without writing a philosophy treatise): are they written in advance, or only the result of our imagination?Memories and personal quotes in the book underline the intimate relation between a scientist and his research, and the interplay with his personal life. Each chapter is illustrated by a full page artistic drawing by Lison Bernet, sometimes kind, sometimes funny, and always poetic.

Book excerpt: Annotation. For thousands of years mankind has tried to understand nature. Exploring the world on all scales with instruments of ever more ingenuity, we have been able to unravel some of the great mysteries that surround us. While collecting an overwhelming multitude of observational facts, we discovered fundamental laws that govern the structure and evolution of physical reality. We know that nature speaks to us in the language of mathematics. In this language most of our basic understanding of the physical world can be expressed in an unambiguous and concise way. The most artificial language turns out to be the most natural of all. The laws of nature correspond to equations. These equations are the icons of knowledge that mark crucial turning points in our thinking about the world we happen to live in. They form the symbolic representation of most of what we know, and as such constitute an important and robust part of our culture. Publication coincides with the World Year of Physics: "http://www.wyp2005.nl">www.wyp2005.nl "This beautifully designed book deserves a place on the coffee table .[..] Sander Bais confides the reader in the exciting secrets of the laws of nature, and does so in a clear, surprisingly poetic language." "The Equations is a catalogue. A catalogue that belongs to an exhibition of 17 typographic works of art - which gallery will frame them and hang them on the wall? The formulas, displayed in white symbols on a bright red background, are of an untouchable beauty ." 'Untouchable icons' - NRC Handelsblad "The Equations is an absolute feast for everyone who is interested in what physicists have to say about the structure of the world and the beauty that emanates from this. It is a jewel of knowledge, written with love for the field but also with a great compassion for the reader." A rock is a rock, part of cliff, road or sea. But now can you guess what else it can be? A rock can be a...dinosaur bone, stepping-stone, hopscotch marker, fire sparker. Find out about the many roles a rock can play in this poetic exploration of rocks around the world. Laura Purdie Salas's lyrical, rhyming text and Violeta Dabija's glowing illustrations make simple yet profound observations about seemingly ordinary objects and encourage readers to suggest "what else it can be!" Using metaphors for a leaf (tree topper / rain stopper), a rock (hopscotch marker / fire sparker), and water (thirst quencher / kid drencher), these insightful picture books creatively highlight a variety of roles and relationships in nature.
