Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, course: North American Short Stories, language: English, abstract: Edgar Allan Poe's name is related to the American short story like none other in the history of American Literature. While Washington Irving is commonly seen as the creator of the short story, Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as the first to have realised its potential and the first to have created an aesthetical theory of the short story. This theory though, especially Poe's depiction of the skilful artist and his/her perfect way of creating art, gave rise to many heated discussions, which strongly shaped the image of Poe. Thus he is likely to be seen as the cold-blooded, emotionally unaffected author who creates art on demand, contriving compositions with an unparalleled precision and brilliancy. Many critics therefore rather based their criticism on the life and the person of Edgar Allan Poe, instead of his contributions to the development of literature. This work strictly wants to avoid to draw any populist parallels between the author Poe and the person Poe. The first part of this term paper therefore deals with Poe's literary theory as such. I will focus mainly on Poe's major concerns of effect and the genres of poetry and prose. Furthermore I will pose the question, what is the actual matter of Poe's theory, is it a profound concept or just a vague and hasty response to Emerson's "The Poet", with the mere purpose of provoking his contemporaries and thus to get attention? Since the formulation of a theory always raises the question of its applicability, especially on the part of its originator, the second part will scrutinise to what extent Edgar Allan Poe stuck to his own principles. Is there a discrepancy between theory and practice in the work of Edgar Allan Poe, and if so how can this be explained? His short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" will provide th

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 2,0, Universität zu Köln (Englisches Seminar), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper provides research into the constituents of Edgar Allan Poe’s concept of beauty by taking into account a selection of his critical essays, among them “The Philosophy of Composition” and “The Poetic Principle.” The final goal is to filter out the essence of Poe’s idea of beauty. Furthermore, the author will argue that a coherent concept of beauty exists in the works of Poe. This paper will also consider the works of Poe’s critics who are concerned with his relations to the American press and his dependence on romantic philosophers. After the establishment of a coherent concept of beauty, the author applies it to Poe’s poem “To Helen."

Book excerpt: The author of the famed American poem 'The Raven', Edgar Allan Poe didn't just write poems. He was also a literary critic of them. 'The Rationale of Verse' is an essay on the writing of poetic verses. Poe argues for verses to be written in a systematic manner and style, in respect to the arrangement of the words and syllables. Amongst his various suggestions on how to go about this, he opines that, "one-tenth of it, possibly, may be called ethical; nine-tenths, however, appertain to mathematics." He also makes a claim of being among the few critics, in his time, to study the aspect of systematic verse composition for a modern language such as English.

While his poems and short stories first gained popularity in Europe, his fellow Americans appreciated his sharp essays and merciless literary criticism. His legacy continues until the present day and transcends the borders of literature, influencing writers of both fiction and non-fiction as well as artists and even scientists. Poe himself and many others have often described the literary theory which underlies all of his work, yet less light has been shed upon how that theory was formed. Analysing the writer's works in conjunction with the various scientific, philosophic and literary material that he is known to have read, Margaret Alterton reconstructs the genesis of the very fundament of Poe's genius.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, short story writer, playwright, editor, critic, essayist and one of the leaders of the American Romantic Movement. He was born to a Scots-Irish family in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. The family travelled to England in 1815, and Edgar sailed with them. He attended the Grammar School in Irvine, Scotland for a short period in 1815, before rejoining the family in London in 1816. He studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until the summer of 1817. Best known for his tales of the macabre and mystery, Poe was one of the early American practitioners of the short story and a progenitor of detective fiction and crime fiction. He is also credited with contributing to the emergent science fiction genre. His works have had a broad influence on American and world literature (sometimes even despite those who tried to resist it), and even on the art world beyond literature. The scope of his influence on art is evident when one sees the many and diverse artists who were directly and profoundly influenced by him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE.THIS study of Poe's poetry has been made in the spirit suggested in Walter Pater's Preface to his "Renaissance." These quotations are appropriate to the purpose: -"The objects with which aesthetic criticism deals - music, poetry, artistic and accomplished forms of human life - are indeed receptacles of so many powers or forces: they possess, like the products of nature, so many virtues or qualities. What is this song or picture, this engaging personality presented in life or book, to me? What effect does it really have on me? Does it give me pleasure? and if so, what sort or degree of pleasure? How is my nature modified by its presence, and under its influence? The answers to these questions are original facts with which the aesthetic critic has to do; and, as in the study of light, of morals, of number, one must realize such primary data for oneself, or not at all. And he who experiences these impressions strongly, and drives directly at the discrimination and analysis of them, has no need to trouble himself with the abstract question what beauty is in itself, or what its exact relation to truth or experience - metaphysical questions, as unprofitable as metaphysical questions elsewhere.""And the function of the aesthetic critic is to distinguish, analyze, and separate from its adjuncts, the virtue by which a picture, a landscape, a fair personality in life or in a book, produces this special impression of beauty or pleasure, to indicate what the source of that impression is, and under what conditions it is experienced."I have kept, whimsically, to a study of Poe's poetry and known no other poet the while; I have therefore no opinions to venture on questions of comparative merit...
