Download or read book Poetry Unbound written by Mike Chasar and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s become commonplace in contemporary culture for critics to proclaim the death of poetry. Poetry, they say, is no longer relevant to the modern world, mortally wounded by the emergence of new media technologies. In Poetry Unbound, Mike Chasar rebuts claims that poetry has become a marginal art form, exploring how it has played a vibrant and culturally significant role by adapting to and shaping new media technologies in complex, unexpected, and powerful ways. Beginning with the magic lantern and continuing through the dominance of the internet, Chasar follows poetry’s travels off the page into new media formats, including silent film, sound film, and television. Mass and nonprint media have not stolen poetry’s audience, he contends, but have instead given people even more ways to experience poetry. Examining the use of canonical as well as religious and popular verse forms in a variety of genres, Chasar also traces how poetry has helped negotiate and legitimize the cultural status of emergent media. Ranging from Citizen Kane to Leave It to Beaver to best-selling Instapoet Rupi Kaur, this book reveals poetry’s ability to find new audiences and meanings in media forms with which it has often been thought to be incompatible. Illuminating poetry’s surprising multimedia history, Poetry Unbound offers a new paradigm for understanding poetry’s still evolving place in American culture.
Download or read book Codename: Lehi written by Jon Beckmon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the condensed version of my life. It contains the things I can remember most about what has occurred in my life. It is in effect the autobiography of Jonathan Daniel Beckmon which is my full legal name given to me by my parents Raymond Beckmon and Linda Helms (her maiden name) and assigned to me in the United States of America where I was born. At my current stage of life my only real goal is to get married. I have been looking for a suitable spouse for at least 15 years as of the time this book is being published with no luck. Its very hard to find a decent moral woman with the current state of our society and general lack of moral values in the United States of America. I honestly feel that had I been born in Russia I would have been married long ago. I had much better luck finding women there that were interested in my qualities and that were decent human beings. However I have only managed to make it to Russia once as it is beyond my current financial means to go there a lot until I find a wife. Since I refuse to lower my very high standards Ive lived out my life alone. It is better to die alone than to marry a wicked woman. You can read the book to find where the codename Lehi comes from.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry by : Fran Brearton
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry written by Fran Brearton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty chapters, written by leading scholars across the world, describe the latest thinking on modern Irish poetry. The Handbook begins with a consideration of Yeats's early work, and the legacy of the 19th century. The broadly chronological areas which follow, covering the period from the 1910s through to the 21st century, allow scope for coverage of key poetic voices in Ireland in their historical and political context. From the experimentalism of Beckett, MacGreevy, and others of the modernist generation, to the refashioning of Yeats's Ireland on the part of poets such as MacNeice, Kavanagh, and Clarke mid-century, through to the controversially titled post-1969 'Northern Renaissance' of poetry, this volume will provide extensive coverage of the key movements of the modern period. The Handbook covers the work of, among others, Paul Durcan, Thomas Kinsella, Brendan Kennelly, Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, Michael Longley, Medbh McGuckian, and Ciaran Carson. The thematic sections interspersed throughout - chapters on women's poetry, religion, translation, painting, music, stylistics - allow for comparative studies of poets north and south across the century. Central to the guiding spirit of this project is the Handbook's consideration of poetic forms, and a number of essays explore the generic diversity of poetry in Ireland, its various manipulations, reinventions and sometimes repudiations of traditional forms. The last essays in the book examine the work of a 'new' generation of poets from Ireland, concentrating on work published in the last two decades by Justin Quinn, Leontia Flynn, Sinead Morrissey, David Wheatley, Vona Groarke, and others.
