Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pat Morrell-Donnelly’s “Poems For Conservatives” book is a part 2 or sequel to her first “Poems For Conservatives” book published in 2010. Her first book contained post cards and letters from three former Presidents and a First Lady in response to poems Pat had written and sent to them. Both books contain political-type poems. Poems in her sequel, her second book, Pat wrote between 2010 and 2022. In 2015 Pat had hip replacement, and her husband had a massive stroke. There did not seem to be time or inclination to write. In 2021 Pat’s husband passed away, she moved, again, leaving little time for writing. Pat feels at her age, these last days of her life, she needs to get the poems into a book or they will die in her computer when she passes away. They will be lost and gone forever. Perhaps in distant future years there will be those interested in events that occurred in our country’s previous years. Thoughts in rhyme makes it easy to read. The poems speak to events, and about those in power at different given times. The poems reveal what was happening, politically, through those years. Questions to ponder: Did parties in power serve their constituents or was it about power and greed? Sadly with the Biden Administration it was the latter plus utter incompetence. Were “powers that be” abiding by the Constitution? Were they interested in limited government or about controlling people’s lives? Did they believe in free speech and the 2nd Amendment? Did they believe in abortion? Did they believe in free enterprise, free market? Were they for or against redistribution of wealth? Most of these things are concerns of Conservatives. Most have heard the three most important things in life are God, Family, and Country. These make for a strong, free America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pats book Poems For Conservatives contains poems mostly in the political vein, most written the last couple of years as radicalism in Washington D. C. has shown its face in such a devastating manner. This type of Government is not what the people of America are about or what they stand for--the vote buying, back room deals, and lack of transparency. Pat's poems reveal her belief that this great country is being taken down a dangerous path, and needs to be stopped. Its her opinion that if those presently in charge can get rid of the seniors through a Government run health care system that withholds valuable drugs and care and sends them to an early grave, they would have an open field to indoctrinate our youth who then would never know the great country previous generations have been privileged to know. Born into "humble beginnings" Pat has "always been proud of her country, unlike Michele Obama who stated a number of times for the first time in her adult life she was proud of her country. The older generation is well aware of the price of freedom. They know about free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and dreaming big dreams. They know about failing. They know about determination. These things have made America great. Not the re-distribution of wealth, or big Government. Beliefs must be passed on about unlimited opportunities this country affords for those willing to work hard, pay their dues, and take advantage of the possibilities. Just get the Government out of the way. Pat feels we must pass on our Constitution, and values and pride in this country. We must pass on the America we have known. We can not allow any group to take away the rights our forefathers fought and died for and left in our care.

Book excerpt: From public intellectual and professor Robert Boyers, a thought-provoking volume of nine essays that elegantly and fiercely addresses recent developments in American culture and argues for the tolerance of difference that is at the heart of the liberal tradition. Written from the perspective of a liberal intellectual who has spent a lifetime as a writer, editor, and college professor, The Tyranny of Virtue is a precise and nuanced insider’s look at shifts in American culture—most especially in the American academy—that so many people find alarming. Part memoir and part polemic, an anatomy of important and dangerous ideas, and a cri de coeur lamenting the erosion of standard liberal values, Boyers’s collection of essays is devoted to such subjects as tolerance, identity, privilege, appropriation, diversity, and ableism that have turned academic life into a minefield. Why, Robert Boyers asks, are a great many liberals, people who should know better, invested in the drawing up of enemies lists and driven by the conviction that on critical issues no dispute may be tolerated? In stories, anecdotes, and character profiles, a public intellectual and longtime professor takes on those in his own progressive cohort who labor in the grip of a poisonous and illiberal fundamentalism. The end result is a finely tuned work of cultural intervention from the front lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War an unlikely coalition of poets, editors, and politicians converged in an attempt to discredit--if not destroy--the American modernist avant-garde. Ideologically diverse yet willing to bespeak their hatred of modern poetry through the rhetoric of anticommunism, these "anticommunist antimodernists," as Alan Filreis dubs them, joined associations such as the League for Sanity in Poetry to decry the modernist "conspiracy" against form and language. In Counter-revolution of the Word Filreis narrates the story of this movement and assesses its effect on American poetry and poetics. Although the antimodernists expressed their disapproval through ideological language, their hatred of experimental poetry was ultimately not political but aesthetic, Filreis argues. By analyzing correspondence, decoding pseudonyms, drawing new connections through the archives, and conducting interviews, Filreis shows that an informal network of antimodernists was effective in suppressing or distorting the postwar careers of many poets whose work had appeared regularly in the 1930s. Insofar as modernism had consorted with radicalism in the Red Decade, antimodernists in the 1950s worked to sever those connections, fantasized a formal and unpolitical pre-Depression High Modern moment, and assiduously sought to de-radicalize the remnant avant-garde. Filreis's analysis provides new insight into why experimental poetry has aroused such fear and alarm among American conservatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the triumph of postmodern studies, explication of classic poems by great dead white male English poets of preceding centuries has greatly declined in the last several decades, even though many of the poems may still be puzzling to interested readers, young and old. This book is addressed to both audiences in the hope that new explications of twelve classic poems (or sections of these poems) by Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Hardy, Yeats, and Auden may help sustain interest in the poems. Although the explication procedure is now unpopular in theory and held to be as subjective as interpretation, the procedure is based on the experience that, if a puzzling poem is reasoned with, it can often be found to make sense on a basic level of understanding—a sense perhaps complex, ambiguous, or ambivalent but not self-contradictory. In essence, then, this is a book of poetry explications having esthetic aims but written in an era of unesthetic political and cultural studies. The term conservative in the title refers to explicatory rather than political conservatism as well as to critical and literary conservation—i.e., to conserving the practice of explication whether upon literary works old or new, and so also conserving esthetic interest in the old works themselves. The book also attempts to show that new conservative explications are still possible and can be still useful—even in the postmodern era and even on classic poems already much explicated—and that therefore explication still has much to do in the work of literary studies in the postmodern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Frost is by far the most celebrated major American poet of the twentieth century. In part, this is because his poetry seems, on the surface, to be so accessible, even homey. But Frost was not just a powerful writer of popular lyric and narrative verse, argues Peter J. Stanlis in this major contribution to American literary study and philosophy. Rather, his work is deeply rooted in a complex philosophical dualism that opposes both idealistic monism, centered in spirit, and scientific positivism, which posits that the universe can be understood as nothing but matter. InRobert Frost: The Poet as Philosopher,Stanlis shows how Frost’s philosophical dualism of spirit and matter is perceived through metaphors and applied to science, religion, art, education, and society. He further argues that Frost’s dualism provides a critique of the monistic forces that were instrumental in the triumph of twentieth-century totalitarianism. Thoroughly informed by his twenty-three year friendship and correspondence with Frost, Stanlis’s landmark volume is the first attempt to deal with the poet’s philosophy in a systematic manner. It will appeal not only to fans of Frost but to all who understand poetry as a form of revelation for understanding human nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counter-revolution of the Word is about conservatives' attempt to destroy the modernist avant-garde in the anticommunist period after World War II. The antagonists readers will meet in these pages by no means constitute a monolithic force. They were not ideologically of a kind. But aesthetically. Well, yes, aesthetically they were more or less unified; they knew what they formally opposed, and the narrative of that surprising unity lies at the center of this study. A few of these people did work together, such as the band of poets and poetry editors - most of them reactionary antimodernists - that the prolific Stanton Coblentz helped assemble under the banner of the League for Sanity in Poetry. Others among Coblentz's colleagues, however, would not have recognized themselves as allies; quite aside from their hatred of modern poetry, differences between them - academic, theoretical, personal - would have gotten in the way. To my knowledge, this is the first book written about the overall effects of actual anticommunism on modernist American poetry and poetics. Such a blank in our understanding of American art and artists has its specific causes. A main cause is the apparent disappearance of the evidence for links between and among disparate, truculent McCarthyite elements in the poetry world and their ''communist poet'' enemies and the modernist experimenters who have not been known to have connections to the communist movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite sustained scholarly interest in the politics of modernism, astonishingly little attention has been paid to its relationship to Conservatism. Yet modernist writing was imbricated with Tory rhetoric and ideology from when it emerged in the Edwardian era. By investigating the many intersections between Anglophone modernism and Tory politics, Conservative Modernists offers new ways to read major figures such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, T. E. Hulme, and Ford Madox Ford. It also highlights the contribution to modernism of lesser-known writers, including Edward Storer, J. M. Kennedy, and A. M. Ludovici. These are the figures to whom it most frequently returns, but, cutting through disciplinary delineations, the book simultaneously reveals the inputs to modernism of a broad range of political writers, philosophers, art historians, and crowd psychologists: from Pascal, Burke, and Disraeli, to Nietzsche, Le Bon, Wallas, Worringer, Ribot, Bergson, and Scheler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few beliefs seem more fundamental to American conservatism than faith in the free market. Yet throughout American history, many of the major conservative intellectual and political figures have harbored deep misgivings about the unfettered market and its disruption of traditional values, hierarchies, and communities. In Conservatives Against Capitalism, Peter Kolozi traces the history of conservative skepticism about the influence of capitalism on politics, culture, and society. Kolozi discusses conservative critiques of capitalism—from its threat to the Southern way of life to its emasculating effects on American society to the dangers of free trade—considering the positions of a wide-ranging set of individuals, including John Calhoun, Theodore Roosevelt, Russell Kirk, Irving Kristol, and Patrick J. Buchanan. He examines the ways in which conservative thought went from outright opposition to capitalism to more muted critiques, ultimately reconciling itself to the workings and ethos of the market. By analyzing the unaddressed historical and present-day tensions between capitalism and conservative values, Kolozi shows that figures regarded as iconoclasts belong to a coherent tradition, and he creates a vital new understanding of the American conservative pantheon.
