Taking time as an overarching structure—specifically, the twelve months of the year—Dimitrov elevates the everyday, and speaks directly to the reader as if the poem were a phone call or a text message. From the personal to the cosmos, the moon to New York City, the speaker is convinced that love is “our best invention.” Dimitrov doesn’t resist joy, even in despair. These poems are curious about who we are as people and shamelessly interested in hope.

Book excerpt: From the author of The Latehomecomer, a powerful memoir of her father, a Hmong song poet who sacrificed his gift for his children's future in America In the Hmong tradition, the song poet recounts the story of his people, their history and tragedies, joys and losses; extemporizing or drawing on folk tales, he keeps the past alive, invokes the spirits and the homeland, and records courtships, births, weddings, and wishes. Following her award-winning book The Latehomecomer, Kao Kalia Yang now retells the life of her father Bee Yang, the song poet, a Hmong refugee in Minnesota, driven from the mountains of Laos by American's Secret War. Bee lost his father as a young boy and keenly felt his orphanhood. He would wander from one neighbor to the next, collecting the things they said to each other, whispering the words to himself at night until, one day, a song was born. Bee sings the life of his people through the war-torn jungle and a Thai refugee camp. But the songs fall away in the cold, bitter world of a Minneapolis housing project and on the factory floor until, with the death of Bee's mother, the songs leave him for good. But before they do, Bee, with his poetry, has polished a life of poverty for his children, burnished their grim reality so that they might shine. Written with the exquisite beauty for which Kao Kalia Yang is renowned, The Song Poet is a love story -- of a daughter for her father, a father for his children, a people for their land, their traditions, and all that they have lost.

Book excerpt: Illuminating and inspiring, the poems in Joi Green's first book come together as a collection that is personal in style and global in meaning. At its core, this is a journey of three stages. The reader becomes a companion, traveling with the author as she moves from love, to tears, to growth. Each stage of the journey speaks with an impassioned, but never overdone, understanding of the human heart and soul. Through the journey, the reader finds an expression of the spiritual and emotional turns of life that are so hard to define and describe. These lines of verse bring comfort and companionship of a kind older than human history. They tap into the essential part of our being and remind us that our everyday life, which can seem so ordinary, connects us to something higher. Through these pages, Joi draws on what she has experienced and dreamed in the past and the present. And always the invitation extends to the reader to join her in experiencing, dreaming and truly living life.

Book excerpt: Theodore Prime composed Burning Desire while a senior at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. A writer of poetry since he was 12 years old, Theo often reflected upon the things a man in love thinks about but never says to the object of his affections. This collection of poems is his first attempt to capture the essence of these feelingsthe yearning, the longing, the hurt, the anguish, and even the despair that torments a man who plays the game of love . . . and often loses. And while men certainly will identify with the feelings found here, it is the women among his readers whom Theo really is addressing. For it is they who finally will secure a window into a mans heart and see, perhaps for the first time, how vulnerable men really are.

Book excerpt: The Phases of Love is a unique and sublime collection of poems by Shah Asad Rizvi. Dedicated to love in its entirety, Shah weaves and outlines the heart's journey that is at the very soul of all humanity. Shah's collection of poetry reads like a roadmap of the heart and soul from the splendor and magic of new love to heartache and broken-heartedness to healing and growth. Divided into four stages, this rare and exceptional collection of verse contains 200 poems that pay homage to the heart's truest emotion like no other collection before it has. Be prepared to have your heart touched, and soul laid bare as you are consumed by the words and the turning of the pages. You will be reminded of the excitement of new love in all its glory and magnificence. Feel the closeness and completeness of bonding, the suffering and anguish of hurting, and the sunlight and acceptance of healing. From the first poem to the last, Shah reserves no emotion as he delivers a truly exceptional analysis of all that is love. The most remarkable aspect of this collection is that The Phases of Love allows the reader to travel next to Shah as he takes you with him through each section of the heart's journey. It is as though Shah has welcomed you into his homeland and offered you a tour that only a true native can provide. His perceptions and understanding of love are born from a genuine poet's heart and from one who has loved as fully and completely as one human can. Shah's insights on hurt and healing are especially powerful. The reader is offered a first-hand account and portrayal of what it is to love entirely and nonetheless have a heart shattered and rejected. Still, despite the sorrow that runs deep in these sections, the true triumphant is the healing that Shah promises the reader. So delicately, his words wrap around the reader's heart and pull back the curtain of despair to reveal the coming sunlight of a new day and new love. Bringing the reader full circle, Shah closes The Phases of Loves on a crescendo that will dwell in the reader's mind, heart, and soul long after the book has been closed.

Book Synopsis Air and Angels by : John Donne

Book excerpt: JOHN DONNE: AIR AND ANGELS: SELECTED POEMS A selection of the finest poems by British poet John Donne. John Donne was, Robert Graves said, a 'Muse poet', a poetwho wrote passionately of the Muse. It is easy to see Donne asa love poet, in the tradition of love poets such as Bernard deVentadour, Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch and Torquato Tasso. Donne has written his fair share of lovepoems. There are the bawdy allusions to the phallus in 'TheFlea', while 'The Comparison' parodies the adoration poem, with references to the 'sweat drops of my mistress' breast'. Like William Shakespeare in his parody sonnet 'my mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun', Donne sends up the Petrarchan and courtly love genre with gross comparisons ('Like spermatic issue of ripe menstruous boils'). In 'The Bait', there is the archetypal Renaissance opening line 'Come live with me, and be my love', as used by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare, among others. And there is the complex, ambivalent eroticism of 'The Extasie', a much celebrated love poem, and the 19th 'Elegy', where features Donne's famous couplet: Licence my roving hands, and let them go Before, behind, between, above, below. The Songs and Sonnets of John Donne celebrate the many emotions of love, feelings that are so familiar in love poetry from Sappho to Adrienne Rich. Donne does not quite cover every emotion of love, but a good deal of them. In 'The Canonization', we find the age-old Neo-platonic belief that two can become as one ('we two being one', or 'we shall/ Be one', he writes in 'Lovers' Infiniteness'), a common belief in love poetry. John Donne's love poetry, like (nearly) all love poetry, self-reflexive. Although he would 'ne'er parted be', as he writes in 'Song: Sweetest love, I do not go', he knows that love poetry comes out of loss. The beloved woman is not there, so art takes her place. The Songs and Sonnets arise from loss, loss of love; they take the place of love. For, if he were clasping his beloved in those feverish embraces as described in 'The Extasie' and 'Elegy', he would not, obviously, bother with poetry. Love poetry has this ambivalent, difficult relationship with love. The poem is not love, and is no real substitute for it. And writing of love exacerbates the pain and the insecurity of the experience of love. With an introduction and bibliography. Illustrated, with new pictures. The text has been revised for this edition. Also available in an E-book edition. www.crmoon.com. "
