My birthday is around the corner, but it’s hard to be excited with all this crushing anxiety. Anxiety over what, you ask? Well, it’s not because final exams are coming, and it’s definitely not because of the horrific incident at the Archives—although that, too, has me on edge. Something even more unnerving has been happening. Vivid, life-like nightmares haunt me. I wake up groggy and confused, detached from reality. I don’t know what to do or who to tell. My parents? My friends? The professor? Maybe I’ll just handle this on my own...

There are unspoken risks, and I’m not referring to Lenore’s “accident.” Everything I’ve been working toward could vanish in an instant. After what happened to Theo, we need to tread carefully. That’s not our only concern. We think we’ve discovered where the Disbelievers have been recruiting students. We plan to sneak inside, gather intel, and then get out. No harm in that, right? Infiltrating the place won’t be easy, but my friends have my back. We’re smart, and we won’t get caught.

You may think classic literature is boring, but Poe hid prophetic clues in everything. Finding the right words in a poem or short story could save a life or stop a tragedy. The real tragedy is that the school won't let kids my age apply what we've learned. That doesn't prevent my best friend and me from practicing in secret. But words are powerful, and the academy failed to tell us something really important...

Thanks to a clumsy mishap, I’m all out of holiday cheer. We’ve also gotten more bad news about Theo, but I’m determined to help. I’m not sure if it will change things. It’s hard to tell if our destiny is really our own, or if we’re being pushed down a path by an outside force. After discovering Bertrand’s newest secret, I don’t know if I trust the system anymore. I want to believe that prophets truly can make a difference, but can I? BOOK 5 in the POE Prophecies series.

Since joining a super-secret study group, I've learned new things and met new people. But something doesn't smell right, and it's not last week's leftover sandwich in my book bag. I've got a hunch that there's more than meets the eye to this Vincent guy. So what if he has a powerful Kindred and can move about a room like a ghost? He's friends with my cousin, and my cousin should be expelled for things he's said about The Prophet. Lenore thinks Vincent's one of us, but anyone who's friends with Bertrand can't be trusted. I'll do whatever it takes to expose him for what he is.

Book excerpt: Visions in Poetry is an exciting and unique series of classic poems illustrated by outstanding contemporary artists in stunning hardcover editions. The fifth book in the series, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," delves into the hidden horrors of the human psyche. Originally published in 1845, the poem is narrated by a melancholy scholar brooding over Lenore, a woman he loved who is now lost to him. One bleak December at midnight, a raven with fiery eyes visits the scholar and perches above his chamber door. Struggling to understand the meaning of the word his winged visitant repeats -- "Nevermore!" -- the narrator descends by stages into madness. Illustrator Ryan Price's exquisitely grim illustrations suggest a background story shaped by the narrator's guilt, embodied in the terrifying figure of the raven. Price's drypoint technique, with its rich blacks and feathery lines, perfectly captures the nightmarish atmosphere of this unforgettable poem. AGES 10 and up

After its first publishment in January 1845, it was often noted for its musicality, stylized language, as well as for its supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further distress the protagonist with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, as well as of various classical references.

It made Poe an overnight sensation (though his great fame never brought him much wealth) and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love, remains one of the most beloved and recognizable verses in the English language. The illustrations that accompany this Top Five Classics edition are reproductions of the renowned French artist Gustave Doré’s steel-plate engravings created for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 release of The Raven. It would be Doré’s last commission as he died shortly after completing the 25 illustrations in January 1883. His illustrations would become famous in their own right, evoking as they do the lyrical and mystical air of Poe’s masterpiece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Edgar Allan Poe is one of American culture's most iconic figures, inspiring countless derivations beyond the literary realm, from commercial illustration and kitch to art installations and video games. Why has Poe been so hugely influential in media other than his own? What do filmmakers, composers, and other artists find in Poe that suits their purposes so often and so variously? Poe's works are violent and brooding, memorable both for certain grisly images and for certain prevailing moods-dread, creepiness, mournfulness. They are, in other words, distinctly graphic and richly atmospheric. Jonathan Elmer locates the source of Poe's fascination for artists in these two vernacular aesthetic categories-the graphic and the atmospheric-and how well they describe our experience of the multi-media world. Elmer uses Poe to explore these two terms and track some deep patterns in their use, not through theoretical labor but through close encounters with a wide sampling of aesthetic objects that avail themselves of Poe's work. Poe, we learn, has come to exemplify a modern method of aesthetic production. It is as if he left his box of tools lying around for others to pick up and play with. The bundle of Poe traits-his thematic emphasis on extreme sensation, his flexible sense of form, his experimental and modular method, his iconic personal profile-amount to what could be called a Poe "brand," one as likely to be found in music videos or comics as in novels and stories. Ranging from René Magritte and Claude Debussy to Lou Reed, Roger Corman, and Spongebob Squarepants, Elmer shows how the Poe brand opens trunk lines to aesthetic experiences fundamental to a multi-media world"--

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, course: Proseminar I – Introduction to Colonial Literature, language: English, abstract: “The Raven” is one of the most famous poems by Poe, published in January 1845, and will be the basis of this paper. The poet Richard Wilbur said that “of American writers, it is Poe who most challenges the reader not only to read him but to solve him”. Based on this quote it seems to be hard work to understand Poe’s poems. Nevertheless, this paper aims to ‘solve’ his poem “The Raven” by analyzing it and by pointing out the significance of the raven within the poem itself, and, on an abstract level, its impact on our everyday life. At first glance, the raven seems to be a symbol of death, which holds control over the narrator within the poem, and moreover becomes a constant reminder about the inability of man to escape his ultimate fate.
