Meister, Lucius Und Brüning, Hoechst on Main, Germany: Applied in Calico Printing In our Pocket Manual, published some time ago, we gave in a concise and convenient form directions for the application of our dyestuffs. As this manual of recipes met with a very favourable reception and found an extensive use in practice, we determined to issue a more detailed description of the. Various ways in which our colours can be applied. The present volume on, Ca1ico Printing treats of our dyestuffs suitable for that purpose and of the methods used for the fixation and production of colours on cotton fabrics. Owing to the importance of the preparatory processes, to which the prin ted fabrics are subjected, we have, in this volume, described in general lines the bleaching and mercerising of cotton goods and have inserted sketches of some of the most important machinery used in calico printing. The patterns necessary for illustrating the text have been mostly produced in the printing department of our trial laboratory. We trust that our esteemed clients will make ample use of this work as a book of reference and will accord it a friendly reception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coal Tar Colours of Farbwerke Vorm, Meister Lucius Bruning, Vol. 3: Hoechst on Main; And Their Application in Dyeing Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres The manifold uses to which the various classes of goods are put, require a careful selection of the dyestuffs, as not only the exact shade must be produced but also the fastness of that particular class of goods must be taken into consideration. In the following pages we illustrate the practical application of our dyestuffs by a series of dyed patterns. In practice it is not always advisable to produce the greatest fastness, as competition (especially where wages are to be considered), often compels the dyers and manufacturers to adopt the cheapest method, the most productive and cheapest dyestuffs, and the simplest process of dyeing. This is especially the case in the Lining branch. The following patterns produced on a large scale could, therefore, certainly have been dyed with greater fastness, but cheapness being the principal object, they only possess the qualities indispensable for their eventual employment. A. Lining Branch. The chief articles of this branch are represented on pages 16 to 23. In point of quantity it is the most considerable branch of piece dyeing, and the most varied as regards dyeing and the articles to be dyed. Linings are dyed on the jigger, less frequently in the cistern or on the hank dyeing machine (hank wash machine). For Black dyeing in large establishments the continuous dyeing machine is preferred to the jigger. Dyeing by padding is only advantageous when large lots of goods are to be dyed the same shade. As a rule this method will rarely be resorted to for less than 50 pieces of about 65 yards each. After being dried on cylinders the Linings are first starched. The finishing prepares for Blacks are coloured with logwood, bichrome and copper vitriol; for other dark shades with suitable basic colours. After finishing or starching, which is done on ordinary or friction starching machines, according to the filling to be given to the goods, they are dried on the cylinder drying machine, left to cool, and then sprinkled more or less with water, according to the requirements of the article. The sprinkled cloth remains for 12 to 24 hours rolled up firmly and evenly on rollers in lots of 350 yards each, so that the moisture may be evenly distributed. The further treatment depends on the article, and can be varied very much. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Coal Tar Colours, and on Recent Improvements and Progress in Dyeing and Calico Printing: Embodying Copious Notes Taken at the Last London International Exhibition, and Illustrated With Numerous Patterns of Fabrics Dyed With Aniline and Other Colours I wish, however, to state that the processes of which I shall speak are those generally known to calico-printers and dyers; for it will be easily understood that many may use methods peculiarly their own, and that it would be a breach of confidence were I to publish any such pro cesses that may have been communicated to me. I shall divide the subject into two heads. First, treating of new dyeing materials Obtained from well-known dyestuffs, and then of dye stuffs altogether new, together with their application to dyeing. Secondly, I shall consider the subject of calico printing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Coal Tar Colours The writer considered that a work of the nature of a dictionary giving brief descriptions of each coal tar colour would fill the want indicated, hence the appearance of this volume. No systematic account of the process of manufacture, or chemical relationships of the colours, has been attempted, but, as far as it has been possible to obtain the information, the chemical composition, formula, method of making, date of introduction, literature relating to it, and its discoverer have been given, while the properties and uses of the colours have had special attention paid to them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coal Tar Colours of Farbwerke Vorm, Vol. 3: Meister Lucius Bruning, Hoechst on Main, Germany and Their Application in Wool Dyeing The dyeing of woollen yarn is great important in the textile industry, and comprises a large field. The dyed yarns are employed for widely different purposes, and accordingly the demands as to fastness properties are very varied. Since the choice of suitable dyestuffs and the method of applying them depends principally upon the purpose for which the yarn is to be employed, we shall divide our discussion of yarn dyeing under the following heads: 1. Yarns for heavy milling. 2. Yarns for light soap milling. 3. Yarns for water milling. 4. Carpet yarns, yarns for upholstery goods and curtains. 5. Stocking yarns, yarns for hosiery, washing etc. 6. Yarns for fancy articles, knitting yarns etc. 7. Wool laces, woollen braids and bindings. 8. Yarns made from fine wools. The treatment of the yarn before dyeing. In order to produce level and fast colours on yarn, the first and principal requirement is again the purity of the goods. Since we have drawn attention to the importance of the washing of the wool when dealing with the dyeing of loose wool (Vol. II, page 7 etc.) we need only mention here that a bad and unsatisfactory wool-wash has a bad influence on the result in whatsoever stage of manufacture the dyeing takes place. This applies, therefore, also to wool yarn which, when manufactured from badly washed wool, dyes unevenly and yields results which are badly fixed and rub off. The yarns, after spinning, must be further cleansed: They must be "extracted," i. e. freed from those substances which have been added to facilitate the spinning operations. For worsted yarns, generally soap alone is used for this purpose, whilst for carded yarns and also different Cheviot yarns, oil, oleine and olive oil are employed. In most cases, for the better class combed yarns a treatment with hot water is sufficient, whilst carded yarns and many Cheviot and weft yarns containing a high percentage of fatty substances are first treated with alkali, and then the fatty compounds removed by washing in water. It is very difficult, in fact almost impossible, to cleanse yarns which have been spun with fats which do not saponify easily, or with mineral oil. The use of such products in spinning cannot be too strongly condemned, for the disadvantages consequent upon their employment are out of all proportion to the relatively small saving which accrues from the substitution of these substances in place of Oleine. Yarns which have been spun with soap only, such as the better class worsted yarns, zephyr yarns etc. are generally "steeped" in the bundle, i. e. they are placed in boiling water contained in a suitable vessel, and allowed to stay therein for several hours, generally overnight. This steeping serves a two-fold purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coal Tar Colours of Farbwerke Vorm. Meister Lucius Bruning Hoechst on Main, Germany, and Their Application in Dyeing Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres, Vol. 2 Having introduced, in the previous two chapters, both separately and in groups, our colours used for dyeing vegetable fibres, we now proceed to discuss, in the following third part, the practical methods of dyeing, in so far as it has not already been done in the second part for Indigo, Alizarine, Azo Colours developed on the fibre, Aniline Black and Diphenyl Black. Naturally, this survey cannot be exhaustive. Considering the immense variety in the employment of vegetable fibres, most particularly of cotton, it is only possible to select, in the scope of'the present work, a few typical examples, in order to show their application for certain purposes. A principal factor in the use of dyestuffs is the machine industry. It has, therefore, been found necessary to follow also with close attention the improvements and simplifications achieved in that department. As already done in the first volume, in discussing vat dyeing etc., we illustrate, in the following pages, the various methods of dyeing by drawings of machines. We give, in the first place, a classified synopsis of the properties of our Cotton dyestuffs, afterwards entering into a discussion of the third part, which we have divided into.the following chapters.
