Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Romane Questions And here we must note a further limitation Of the subject Of the Romans Questions and of this Introduction. Surprise and inquiry are excited not by the familiar, but by the unusual so Plutarch's attention was arrested not by customs which, though purely Italian, were universal in Italy, e.g., the practice of covering the head during worship, but by fashions for which he could find no analogy or parallel in the stage Of religion with which alone he was acquainted. In such isolated customs, out of harmony with their surroundings, modern science sees survivals from an earlier stage Of culture and it is as survivals that they will be treated in this Introduction. Now, the stage Of religion with which Plutarch was familiar, and in which he could find no analogies for those fashions and customes, was polytheism and if those practices are survivals, they must be survivals from a stage of religion earlier than polytheism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Problems From and After Plutarch's Roman Questions: With Introductory Essay on Roman Worship and Belief Consequently the chief value of Plutarch's treatise, apart from its charm of manner, lies rather in the questions asked than in the answers given. Our interest is stimulated less by what is said than by what is left unsaid. In the selection which I have made from the one hundred and thirteen questions on Roman customs and antiquities, I have confined myself almost wholly to the problems of ritual and religion; prefacing Plutarch's queries with a sketch of Roman and Italian beliefs, and supplementing them with a dozen extra questions on subjects which Plutarch might have asked but did not. I have tried in these last to imagine what Plutarch would have written if he had lived in modern times, and had had access to the sources of modern information. If, as is not unlikely, the attempt has been a failure, the responsibility is not with the authorities but with the lack of skill in handling them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives: Translated From the Original Greek; With Notes, Critical and Historical and a Life of Plutarch In the Notes we have prosecuted these several intentions. We have endeavored to bring the English reader acquainted with the Greek and Roman Antiquities; where Plutarch had omitted anything remarkable in the Lives, to an ply it from other eu thors, and to make his book in some measure a genera! History 0 the periods under his pen. In the notes too we have assigned reasons for it, where we have differed from the former translators. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposiacs By Plutarch Plutarch (Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus), was a Greek historian, biographer, and essayist, known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. He is considered today to be a Middle Platonist. He was born to a prominent family in Chaeronea, Boeotia, a town about twenty miles east of Delphi. Symposiacs is one of Plutarch's less known essays. Has it happens to many works of antiquity like this one, small pieces of the book are missing. Unfortunately because of that, some "questions" made in the Symposiacs are forever missing an answer. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: The Complete Essays of Plutarch includes 133 chapters on nature, Plutarch's Symposiacs, as well as his collection of literary essays. Plutarch was a Platonist, but was open to the influence of the Peripatetics, and in some details even to Stoicism despite his criticism of their principles. He rejected only Epicureanism absolutely. He attached little importance to theoretical questions and doubted the possibility of ever solving them. He was more interested in moral and religious questions. Plutarch's writings had an enormous influence on English and French literature. Shakespeare paraphrased parts of Thomas North's translation of selected Lives in his plays, and occasionally quoted from them verbatim. Plutarch's influence declined in the 19th and 20th centuries, but it remains embedded in the popular ideas of Greek and Roman history. One of his most famous quotes was one that he included in one of his earliest works. "The world of man is best captured through the lives of the men who created history." This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

Nero came to the imperial throne in 54 a.d., and the apostle Peter entered the imperial city with the message of Christianity only a few years later.
