Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in Plume are nuclear-age songs of innocence and experience set in the "empty" desert West. Award-winning poet Kathleen Flenniken grew up in Richland, Washington, at the height of the Cold War, next door to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, where "every father I knew disappeared to fuel the bomb," and worked at Hanford herself as a civil engineer and hydrologist. By the late 1980s, declassified documents revealed decades of environmental contamination and deception at the plutonium production facility, contradicting a lifetime of official assurances to workers and their families that their community was and always had been safe. At the same time, her childhood friend Carolyn's own father was dying of radiation-induced illness: "blood cells began to err one moment efficient the next / a few gone wrong stunned by exposure to radiation / as [he] milled uranium into slugs or swabbed down / train cars or reported to B Reactor for a quick run-in / run-out." Plume, written twenty years later, traces this American betrayal and explores the human capacity to hold truth at bay when it threatens one's fundamental identity. Flenniken observes her own resistance to facts: "one box contains my childhood / the other contains his death / if one is true / how can the other be true?" The book's personal story and its historical one converge with enriching interplay and wide technical variety, introducing characters that range from Carolyn and her father to Italian physicist Enrico Fermi and Manhattan Project health physicist Herbert Parker. As a child of "Atomic City," Kathleen Flenniken brings to this tragedy the knowing perspective of an insider coupled with the art of a precise, unflinching, gifted poet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and inspiring collection is a sweeping overview of poetry written in New York in the year after the 9/11 attacks . . . This anthology contains poems by forty-five of the most important poets of the day, as well as some of the literary world’s most dynamic young voices, all writing in New York City in the year immediately following the World Trade Center attacks. It was inspired by the editors' observation that after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, poetry was being posted everywhere in New York—on telephone poles, on warehouse walls, on bus shelters, in the letters-to-the-editor section of newspapers ... New Yorkers spontaneously turned to poetry to understand and cope with the tragedy of the attack. Full of humor, love, rage and fear, this diverse collection of poems attests to that power of poetry to express and to heal the human spirit. Featuring poems by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn; Best American Poetry series editor David Lehman; National Book Award winner and New York State Poet Jean Valentine; the first ever Nuyorican Slam-Poetry champ; poets laureate of Brooklyn and Queens; and a poem and introduction by National Book Award finalist Alicia Ostriker.

Edited by Daniel Lawless. PLUME POETRY 7 comprises the very best new poems from a curated roster of renowned and emerging poets, hailing from the U.S. and abroad. Its contents have been labeled "eclectic" and "with no literary axe to grind." Here you find under one roof a host of disparate poetries, from those of Pulitzer Prize winners Rae Armantrout and Stephen Dunn, to Kingsley Tufts Poetry Prize recipients Patrica Smith and this volume's Featured Poet Angie Estes; from Billy Collins to Lydia Davis, Afaa Weaver to Kwame Dawes, Simon Armitage to Hisa Yu. But perhaps Bruce Smith says it best: "PLUME POETRY 7 offers a counter-voice to the dominant discourses of our age, a blessed alternative to broadcasts, and information, and 'intelligence.' There is virtuoso discernment and commitment and a discriminate sympathy at work in the assembly of these poets that remind us of our multiplicity, our endurance, our soul." No wonder, then, that in its seventh year, the anthology has risen to the ranks of the Best American Poetry series and increasingly finds a home in some of the nation's finest university classrooms, where by all accounts students and their instructors are perusing and using its poems to discover their own voices and, in the case of the latter, exciting new ways to guide them in that journey. Contributors: Nin Andrews, Rae Armantrout , Simon Armitage, Christopher Buckley, Billy Collins, Cynthia Cruz, Lydia Davis, Kwame Dawes, Stephen Dunn, Marilyn Hacker, Kimiko Hahn, Bob Hicok, Jane Hirshfield, T.R. Hummer, Mark Irwin, Ted Kooser, Dorianne Laux, David Lehman, D. Nurkse, Debra Nystrom, Donald Revell, Clare Rossini, Maxine Scates, Ron Smith, Sandy Solomon, Lisa Russ Spaar, John Taylor (translator), Max Temmerman, Ute von Funcke, Sidney Wade, Afaa M. Weaver, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Last Lake," Reginald Gibbons s tenth book of poems, portrays human actions against the background of long spans of time. We hear the voices of gabbers, singers, lovers, and ghosts from diverse ends of the earth: veterans and victims of wars from ancient Greece and the ancient Central Asian steppes; soldiers from the Civil War, World War II, and Vietnam; militants in the Yosemite Valley and Texas; conservation activists from the vast lakes and rivers to our north; and, finally, our own fraught and noisy Chicago. In the course of these long narrative poems written in virtuoso lines and stanzas, characters step out of the continuum of human experience and sidle up to us, some even from realms accessible only in the imagination, to bridge the universal and abstract with personal, everyday tragedy and experience. The long poem, which occupies the second half of the book, enlarges the scope of American poetry by incorporating poetic effects and features into English more often found in Russian poetry." Last Lake" represents some of the best writing of a long, distinguished career in poetry and is a fine, innovative addition to Phoenix Poets."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dark, no-holds-barred, and often hilarious collection from a prize-winning poet, veering between the poles of self and world. Kim Addonizio’s sharp and irreverent eighth volume, Now We’re Getting Somewhere, is an essential companion to your practice of the Finnish art of kalsarikännit—drinking at home, alone in your underwear, with no intention of going out. Imbued with the poet’s characteristic precision and passion, the collection charts a hazardous course through heartache, climate change, dental work, Outlander, semiotics, and more. Combatting existential gloom with a wicked, seductive energy, Addonizio investigates desire, loss, and the madness of contemporary life. She calls out to Walt Whitman and John Keats, echoes Dorothy Parker, and finds sisterhood with Virginia Woolf. Sometimes confessional, sometimes philosophical, these poems weave from desolation to drollery and clamor with raucous imagery: an insect in high heels, a wolf at an uncomfortable party, a glowing and self-serious guitar. A poet whose “voice lifts from the page, alive and biting” (Sky Sanchez, San Francisco Book Review), Addonizio reminds her reader, "if you think nothing & / no one can / listen I love you joy is coming."

Book excerpt: The Thicket opens into intimate encounters with the more-than-human world—rivers, birds, stones—and with a “you” that is not a person, necessarily, but also not not a person: maybe God, maybe an aspect of the self, maybe neither or both. Often speaking of/to the small or overlooked (weeds by a roadside, an abandoned silo), the poems orient themselves toward edges, transitional spaces like the one where fields shift into woods. Where does one body stop? The Thicket takes an interest in becoming, one thing flowing into something else. Excerpt from “At Cape Henlopen” All night wind insists in the trees, its unsteady hush funneling us down into sleep under the tender shelter the oaks, even leafless, make—all night their trunks creak and sigh and speak. Speak to me—I think the word protect until its edges dissolve, inside the tent that wraps us like another, thinner skin, rocked and chastened by the wind that doesn’t cease . . .

Book excerpt: A hilarious collection of poetry by dogs—the perfect gift for lovers of literature and pups alike. “Dogs seldom make passes At dogs passing gasses.” Are these the words of Dorothy Parker? Ogden Nash? Nope, the author is Sparky from Milton, Pennsylvania. Sparky, Snowy, Tucker, Louie, these canine laureates have written a volume of poetry displaying the brilliance and wit we've always suspected our dogs were hiding from us. They also, it turns out, revere the human geniuses who came before them, as you’ll see with “There Is No Frigate Like A Pavement”—an homage to Emily Dickinson—and “Do Not Go Gentle.” Yes, Dylan Thomas would love it.

Book excerpt: From Chaucer to Billy Collins and from basset hounds to brindle bull terriers, Doggerel presents a robust brood of the most charming verse tributes ever offered to our beloved canine companions. The rich and assorted cadences of some of the most distinguished poets across the centuries ring out from these pages–from Spenser, Shakespeare, and Pope to Merrill, Merwin, and Muldoon–celebrating pooches of every pedigree and persuasion. Here is Margaret Cavendish’s barking chorus of beagles on the hunt; Elizabeth Bishop’s “Pink Dog” alongside Robyn Selman’s “My Dog is Named for Elizabeth Bishop”; Charles Baxter’s villanelle “Dog Kibble,” whose dog-narrator decides that “Life isn’t meaningless because there’s food”; and the desultory charms of Jane Kenyon’s unleashed dog, nuzzling about on a drizzly afternoon. From lazy dogs curled up by the fireplace to audacious hounds howling at the moon, from mutts to purebreds, puppies to old dogs, Doggerel is an irresistible gathering of fast and faithful friends.

This exciting new picture book series for little ones celebrates culture, diversity and the natural wonders of our world. Plume is not your typical Antarctic penguin. Sporting a bright yellow plume on the top of his head, Plume is bored of black and white, of shuffling around and snoozing on icebergs. He much prefers to cook, read, knit and sky dive. He craves colour, adventure, excitement! He wants to seize the world he’s discovered in the books of his fantastical, glacier library (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere). Plume's great hope is to grow the hearts and minds of his penguin friends. Through his travels, children will engage with themes such as friendship, acceptance, understanding and the wellbeing of our planet. Plume is truly a book series for our times.
