Book excerpt: "This thesis focuses on the load profile analysis of the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), examining two different scenarios. In the first scenario, the battery of a PHEV is charged at the final arrival time, and the arrival time analysis has a minute accuracy. In the second scenario, opportunity charging, which refers to the stop-time between two trips, is used for charging the battery of the vehicle. However, if the stop-time between two trips is less than 30 minutes, the duration is not counted as an opportunity charging and it is filtered. The results of the two scenarios are compared, and through this comparison, it is revealed that the opportunity charging scenario has a more flat profile. The improvement not only shows the positive features of the opportunity charging in terms of using more electrical power instead of traditional petroleum-based fuel, but also creates more opportunity for the power grid to use renewable energy resources instead of traditional fossil fuels. These two significant features, present opportunity charging as a strong solution for the negative environmental effects of petroleum vehicles in urban areas, and even in a world-scale view. The data pool is collected from the national household travel survey (NHTS) database, which is a major reference for transportation studies. The analyses are done for the years 2001 and 2009, and the resulting data file includes the data of about 43000 different vehicles"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: Electric Vehicle Integration in a Smart Microgrid Environment The growing demand for energy in today’s world, especially in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, has been met with massive exploitation of fossil fuels, resulting in an increase in environmental pollutants. In order to mitigate the issues arising from conventional internal combustion engine-powered vehicles, there has been a considerable acceleration in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Research has shown that the impact of fossil fuel use in transportation and surging demand in power owing to the growing EV charging infrastructure can potentially be minimalized by smart microgrids. As EVs find wider acceptance with major advancements in high efficiency drivetrain and vehicle design, it has become clear that there is a need for a system-level understanding of energy storage and management in a microgrid environment. Practical issues, such as fleet management, coordinated operation, repurposing of batteries, and environmental impact of recycling and disposal, need to be carefully studied in the context of an ageing grid infrastructure. This book explores such a perspective with contributions from leading experts on planning, analysis, optimization, and management of electrified transportation and the transportation infrastructure. The primary purpose of this book is to capture state-of-the-art development in smart microgrid management with EV integration and their applications. It also aims to identify potential research directions and technologies that will facilitate insight generation in various domains, from smart homes to smart cities, and within industry, business, and consumer applications. We expect the book to serve as a reference for a larger audience, including power system architects, practitioners, developers, new researchers, and graduate-level students, especially for emerging clean energy and transportation electrification sectors in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Throughout this book, especially in the first chapters, alternative vehicles with different power trains are compared in terms of lifetime cost, fuel consumption, and environmental impact. The emissions of greenhouse gases are particularly dealt with. The improvement of the battery, or fuel cell, performance and governmental incentives will play a fundamental role in determining how far and how substantial alternative vehicles will penetrate into the market. An adequate recharging infrastructure is of paramount importance for the diffusion of vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells, as it may contribute to overcome the so-called range anxiety."" Thus, proposed battery charging techniques are summarized and hydrogen refueling stations are described. The final chapter reviews the state of the art of the current models of hybrid and electric vehicles along with the powertrain solutions adopted by the major automakers. Contributions from the worlds leading industry and research experts Executive summaries of specific case studies Information on basic research and application approaches

Book excerpt: This paper evaluates several approaches aimed at making plug-in electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) cost-effective including opportunity charging, replacing the battery over the vehicle life, improving battery life, reducing battery cost, and providing electric power directly to the vehicle during a portion of its travel. Many combinations of PHEV electric range and battery power are included. For each case, the model accounts for battery cycle life and the national distribution of driving distances to size the battery optimally. Using the current estimates of battery life and cost, only the dynamically plugged-in pathway was cost-effective to the consumer. Significant improvements in battery life and battery cost also made PHEVs more cost-effective than today's hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (CVs).

This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) into the transportation system will provide both opportunities and challenges for those who own the vehicles and power systems operators. The opportunities come in the form of the ability to provide vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services including peak load reduction and frequency regulation. Utilizing these services can provide profits for the vehicle owners, cost savings for the grid operators, and reduced air pollution. The primary goal of this study is to analyze these benefits from the viewpoint of the individual vehicle owner. It is found that there is little financial incentive when V2G services are used for peak reduction. There is much greater potential for financial return when V2G services are used to provide frequency regulation, likely enough to incentivize many people to participate in such a program. Proposed in this paper is a system that combines these V2G services into a single program, which could have the effect of ensuring profits for the individual, while still providing cost-saving opportunities for grid operators, and emission reductions during the times when it is needed most. In addition to the opportunities brought about by increased penetration of PHEVs, there are challenges as well. This comes mainly in the form of increased demand for electricity. The possible effects on electricity load of increased PHEV penetration and V2G participation are analyzed in this paper. Furthermore, an econometric model is used to predict the effect of increased electricity load on electricity price at each hour of the day. It is found that increased PHEV penetration can (in a regulated charging scheme) increase electricity loads and prices during the hours when electricity loads and prices are currently lowest. Furthermore, if V2G technology is used for peak reduction, electricity loads and prices can be reduced during peak electricity demand hours. The overall effect of this is a flattening of the daily electricity load and price profiles, which is likely to be beneficial for power system operators. The flattening of the daily electricity price profile has the effect of reducing profits when V2G technology is used for peak reduction because it raises the price during charging (buying electricity) and lowers the price during discharging (selling electricity). While the analysis presented here works within the framework of the current electricity markets, it is possible that the best use for V2G technology could come in a program that allows grid operators to dispatch the stored energy for the optimal purpose (e.g.: peak reduction, regulation, reserves, ramping) at any period of time. This would require a different type of market structure, possibly even a separate market for storage, in which V2G services could participate.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief deals with the control and optimization problem in hybrid electric vehicles. Given that there are two (or more) energy sources (i.e., battery and fuel) in hybrid vehicles, it shows the reader how to implement an energy-management strategy that decides how much of the vehicle’s power is provided by each source instant by instant. Hybrid Electric Vehicles: •introduces methods for modeling energy flow in hybrid electric vehicles; •presents a standard mathematical formulation of the optimal control problem; •discusses different optimization and control strategies for energy management, integrating the most recent research results; and •carries out an overall comparison of the different control strategies presented. Chapter by chapter, a case study is thoroughly developed, providing illustrative numerical examples that show the basic principles applied to real-world situations. The brief is intended as a straightforward tool for learning quickly about state-of-the-art energy-management strategies. It is particularly well-suited to the needs of graduate students and engineers already familiar with the basics of hybrid vehicles but who wish to learn more about their control strategies.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the main theoretical findings related to copulas and shows how statistical modeling of multivariate continuous distributions using copulas can be carried out in the R statistical environment with the package copula (among others). Copulas are multivariate distribution functions with standard uniform univariate margins. They are increasingly applied to modeling dependence among random variables in fields such as risk management, actuarial science, insurance, finance, engineering, hydrology, climatology, and meteorology, to name a few. In the spirit of the Use R! series, each chapter combines key theoretical definitions or results with illustrations in R. Aimed at statisticians, actuaries, risk managers, engineers and environmental scientists wanting to learn about the theory and practice of copula modeling using R without an overwhelming amount of mathematics, the book can also be used for teaching a course on copula modeling.

Book excerpt: In 2007, NREL and Xcel Energy collaborated on an analysis study to better understand the fuel displacement potential, the costs, and the emissions impacts of market introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) into the Xcel Energy Colorado Service Territory. The study indicated the potential for petroleum displacement and highlighted the value of vehicle charge management to limit costs and emissions impacts. As an extension and demonstration of the analysis results, a real-world fleet demonstration project was initiated. The purpose of the project was to 1) quantify the real-world fuel savings benefits of PHEVs, 2) gain an understanding of potential utility loading scenarios due to the introduction of PHEVs, and 3) develop and demonstrate the equipment and tools necessary for utility controlled charging. Analysis of 16 weeks of field study data supports the conclusions drawn in the previous study. PHEV technology holds great promise for enabling petroleum reduction in transportation. Utility controlled charge management was demonstrated and potential load profiles were generated; some of which were synchronized with renewable resources and ancillary services suggesting that utility load management of PHEVs could provide both low CO2 transportation fuel pathways and grid operational flexibility for utilities.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dissertation focuses on the interactions between plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and the power grid. This study has used the data available through the national household travel survey (NHTS) to obtain realistic information such as the arrival time of vehicles, miles driven, and vehicles types. After data manipulation, the aggregated PHEV charging load profiles (PCLP) have been developed. The results show that the peak of PCLP overlaps with the domestic load peak. In order to alleviate this issue, several charging policies have been developed and their impacts on PCLP have been investigated. As a next contribution, the data obtained from NHTS has been used to extract probability distribution functions (PDF) for the arrival time and the energy required to fully charge PHEVs. These functions have been used to propose an event-based simulation framework which emulates the interactions between the power grid and PHEVs and examines how a power grid with limited capacity responds to PHEV charging demand. For instance, for a particular region in the United States and for a specific penetration level, it is possible to obtain the wait time of vehicles, the number of vehicles receiving service, and the number of vehicles that give up. In a smart environment, it becomes necessary to define and schedule optimum policies for smart charging of PHEVs. Finally, this work proposes an optimization problem to find an optimal charging rate schedule for PHEVs. This rate which is variable by time tries to maximize the energy delivered to vehicles while considering the constraints of the grid as well as the wait time of the vehicles"--Abstract, leaf iii.
