Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pleasant Memories of Foreign Travel Most of the large cities of Europe attained their full growth ages ago, hence they appear to-day much the same as in past centuries, with the exception of having expanded their limits by absorbing adjacent territory. Towns and cities in America are often the growth of a few years, but it is not so in the Old World, where time was needed for their development. There antiquity is venerated; here it is frequently regarded with indifference. Mistakes and faults are common to both hemi spheres but frequent communication between the two will in time correct many of these errors, and bring the nations into a more familiar acquaintance with one another. It requires weeks and months to explore and study the rich treasures of art found in the museums of any one great city, for which a special preparation is needed. One should be familiar with the history of the country or city to be visited, and should know what objects of interest are to be seen. He should understand the history of the fine arts, including architecture, and where the works of the great masters are to be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Days Abroad This narrative grew out of a few letters relating the writer's pleasant experiences last August, on a short trip abroad for recreation and rest. Several months are not now required for such a journey. One may see in a week more than was possible in a month's time, half a century ago, and enjoy it fully if the mind is passive, and the purpose not simply to attempt how much may be accomplished in a short space. These sketches the writer hopes may help others whose recreation intervals are short to as thorough enjoyment as he obtained from this trip. New people and customs when mingled with the associations of a vivid past from which all our present life has come, give an agreeable and healthful stimulus to the fancies which carry us out of, and away from the daily routine of habit and cares. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Foreign Travel I could not find my sparrow anywhere on deck this morning, and was told that quite likely, as often happens, he had flown too far from the steamer, and could not get back. There is only a moderate swell of the ocean, imparting no more than a slight motion to the huge steamer. After comparatively clearing away, the fog will gather with wonderful celerity, and the dismal fog-horn sounded all night, much to our disturbance, as our rooms are on the promenade-deck, with port-holes open, for it has come off warm. The sea roughened toward night, and the crests of the swells show white with foam all about. Still, the only motion of the steamer is a slow roll, just enough to affect a few of the most sensitive passengers. May 4. - Warm, with very little sea, and the fog quite gone. The run was four hundred and thirty-three miles, so that, under the most favorable circumstances, the steamer is not doing as well as was expected. The machinery is said not to be working well at all points. Now, at 4 p.m., the sun is out almost for the first time since the first half day, and the sky is not all clear from clouds. Book excerpt: Written in Soviet Moscow in the 1920s—but considered too subversive even to show to a publisher—the seven tales included here attest to Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky’s boundless imagination, black humor, and breathtaking irony: a man loses his way in the vast black waste of his own small room; the Eiffel Tower runs amok; a kind soul dreams of selling “everything you need for suicide”; an absentminded passenger boards the wrong train, winding up in a place where night is day, nightmares are the reality, and the backs of all facts have been broken; a man out looking for work comes across a line for logic but doesn’t join it as there’s no guarantee the logic will last; a sociable corpse misses his own funeral; an inventor gets a glimpse of the far-from-radiant communist future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abroad Again: Or a Fresh Foray in Foreign Fields Such of us as have longed to go abroad, remember, in our young days, and, it may also be said with equal truthfulness, in maturer years, that we have sometimes promised ourselves a good thorough gossip and chat with friends who had just returned from foreign lands and that we were disappointed, even after most laborious effort, in obtaining the information which we expected familiarly imparted, or, in fact, any except what we knew before, and which anybody that had perused a reasonable portion of the current literature of the day would have been able to impart, with out having crossed the ocean.
