Book excerpt: Stressful experiences external to relationships (e.g., work stress, finances) often are associated with poor relationship functioning and lowered relationship satisfaction, a phenomenon called stress spillover. To explain this phenomenon, it has been suggested that coping with stressors drains individuals of their self-regulatory resources, leaving them with fewer resources for engaging in effortful pro-relationship behaviors. The goal of the current study was to examine possible ways for partners to replenish their self-regulatory resources following stressful events, and thus protect their relationships from harmful spillover effects. Specifically, the current study examined (1) whether leisure participation buffers spouses against the deleterious effects of stress and (2) the types of leisure (i.e., leisure with or without one's partner) that are most beneficial for preventing stress spillover and safeguarding the self-regulatory resources necessary for positive relationship functioning. As part of a larger study of marriage, couples completed a 14-day daily diary assessing their daily stress, feelings of self-regulatory depletion, marital conflict, marital satisfaction, and leisure participation. On average, spouses exhibited significant stress spillover, such that spouse reported lower relationship satisfaction, greater relationship conflict and greater self-regulatory depletion on days of high versus low stress. Evidence for the potential buffering role of leisure with a partner were mixed; although spending more time in leisure with the partner was associated with greater relationship satisfaction and lower levels of self-regulatory depletion on high stress days, this leisure also increased the likelihood of relationship conflict under conditions of stress. Leisure without the partner did little to buffer spouses against stress spillover.

Book excerpt: "Nothing is more important to life than water, and no one knows water better than Sandra Postel. Replenish is a wise, sobering, but ultimately hopeful book." --Elizabeth Kolbert "Remarkable." --New York Times Book Review "Clear-eyed treatise...Postel makes her case eloquently." --Booklist, starred review "An informative, purposeful argument." --Kirkus We spend billions of dollars on irrigation, dams, sanitation plants, and other feats of engineering to control water for our own prosperity. What if the answer was not control, but replenishment? Sandra Postel takes readers around the world to explore water projects that work with, rather than against, nature's rhythms. Forest rehabilitation is safeguarding drinking water, farmers are planting cover crops to reduce polluted runoff, and "sponge cities" are capturing rainwater to curb urban flooding. Postel argues that efforts like these will be essential as we adjust to a hotter, wilder climate. Will we continue to fight the water cycle, endangering ourselves and the planet, or recognize our place in it and take advantage of the inherent services nature offers?

Yet at the same time, our ordinary communal relations are being eroded by increased social and geographical mobility, lost traditions, and the growing pluralism of society. Examining this renewed desire for community, Coming Together/Coming Apart locates the current problems of society in the conditions of modern capitalism. Arising out of a common matrix of a world in crisis, contemporary religious, social and feminist discussions of community compose an ideological struggle over the reformation of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Postmodernism is not a found object, but a manufactured artifact." Beginning from this constructivist premise, Brian McHale develops a series of readings of problematically postmodernist novelsJoyce's Ulysses; Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Vineland; Eco's The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum; the novels of James McElroy and Christine Brooke-Rose, avant-garde works such as Kathy Aker's Empire of the Senseless, and works of cyberpunk science-fiction by William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Lewis Shiner, Rudy Rucker, and others. Although mainly focused on "high" or "elite" cultural products, Constructing Postmodernism relates these products to such phenomena of postmodern popular culture as television and the cinema, paranoia and nuclear apocalypse, angelology and the cybernetic interface, and death, now as always, the true Final Frontier. McHale's previous book, Postmodernist Fiction (Routledge, 1987) seemed to propose a single, all-inclusive inventory of postmodernist poetics. This book, by contrast, proposes multiple, overlapping and intersecting inventoriesnot a construction of postmodernism, but a plurality of constructions. - Publisher description.

Clear-headed, crisply written, and free of ideological bias, Replenished Ethnicity is an extraordinary breakthrough in our understanding of the largest immigrant group in the history of the United States. Bravo!"--Gregory Rodriguez, author of Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans, and Vagabonds: Mexican Immigration and the Future of Race in America "Tomas Jimenez's Replenished Ethnicity brilliantly navigates between the two opposing perils in the study of Mexican Americans--pessimistically overracializing them or optimistically overassimilating them. This much-needed and gracefully written book illuminates the on-the-ground situations of the later generations of this key American group, insightfully identifying and analyzing the unique factor operating in its case: more or less continuous immigration for more than a century. Jimenez's work provides a landmark for all future studies of Latin American incorporation into U.S. society."--Richard Alba, author of Remaking the American Mainstream "Tomas Jimenez's study adds a much-needed but long absent element to our understanding of how immigration contributes to the construction and reproduction of Mexican American ethnicity even as it continuously evolves. His work provides useful and needed detail that are absent even from the most reliable surveys."--Rodolfo de la Garza, Columbia University "In a masterful piece of social science, Tomas Jimenez debunks allegations about slow social and cultural assimilation of Mexican Americans through a richly textured ethnographic account of Mexican Americans' lived experiences in two communities with distinct immigration experiences. Population replenishment via immigration, he claims, maintains distinctiveness of established Mexican origin generations via infusion of cultural elixir-in varying doses over time and place. Ironically, it is the vast heterogeneity of Mexican Americans-generational depth, socioeconomic, national origin and legal-that both contributes to the population's ethnic uniqueness and yet defies singular theoretical frameworks. Jimenez's page-turner uses the Mexican American ethnic prism to re-interpret the U.S. ethnic tapestry and revise the canonical view of assimilation. Replenished Ethnicity sets a high bar for second generation scholarship about Mexican Americans."--Marta Tienda, The Office of Population Research at Princeton University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1934 in La Paz when Elsa, a charming Bolivian of Inca descent, meets Jan, a handsome Czech engineer. Three days later he proposed marriage to her. In 1938, when multitudes abandon the Old Continent, they move to Prague with two children born in Argentina. My Roots Continents Apart is an inspiring account of a family's struggle to survive and stay together during the turmoil of Second World War in Europe. The narrative unfolds across venturesome places and situations in Czechoslovakia, Rumania and the Balkans, alongside Jan's role as member of the Czech Resistance. The Nazis convicted him, yet Albert Goering, brother of Herman, saved his life. During the harsh winter of 1946 the family escapes from the Russian invaders and ultimately returns to South America's post war autocratic Argentina. Elsa Wagner started to write this story motivated by the ubiquitous "live" television coverage of warfare since the 1990's, which brought back memories of her childhood. Based on her mother's book El Frente Desarmado, published in 1952, and after further research of her roots, Elsa realized that she was creating a whole new story involving centuries of history and cultures so diverse and apart as Bolivia and Czechoslovakia.
