Book Synopsis The Platonic Theages by : Mark Joyal
Download or read book The Platonic Theages written by Mark Joyal and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of the Theages, a dialogue whose Platonic authorship was not questioned in antiquity but has been doubted by most modern scholars. The book's introductory chapters confront such problems as the dialogue's purpose and meaning, its authenticity and date of composition, its depiction of Socrates' divine sign, and its relation to other Platonic and Socratic literature. The commentary deals in detail with a wide range of philosophical, philological and literary questions. A new text is also offered here, the first to be founded upon a complete knowledge of the manuscript tradition. "Joyal's commentary is the first work that has done justice to the Theages as a genuine document of Ancient Greek rather than as a work to insult and denigrate because it does not reach the heights of the best Platonic dialogues. Philologists and philosophers can gain immeasurably from Joyal's work." Gnomon "There can be no doubt that this edition will stand for many decades as the standard work" The Heythrop Journal "For anyone who does serious work on the language or text of Plato, and anyone who wants to explore an early monument of Socrates' transition from hero to saint, this ambitious study will yield years of profit. Classical World "this is certainly an important book and will be of enormous interest to students of Plato" Scripta Classica Israelica "the edition is a pleasure to use, and an important tool of scholarship. It made me think. What more could one want?" Phoenix .

Book Synopsis The Pseudo-Platonic Seventh Letter by : Myles Burnyeat
Download or read book The Pseudo-Platonic Seventh Letter written by Myles Burnyeat and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Platonic Letter describes Plato's attempts to turn the ruler of Sicily, Dionysius II, into a philosopher ruler along the lines of the Republic. It explains why Plato turned from politics to philosophy in his youth and how he then tried to apply his ideas to actual politics later on. It also sets out his views about language, writing and philosophy. As such, it represents a potentially crucial source of information about Plato, who tells us almost nothing about himself in his dialogues. But is it genuine? Scholars have debated the issue for centuries, although recent opinion has moved in its favour. The origin of this book was a seminar given in Oxford in 2001 by Myles Burnyeat and Michael Frede, two of the most eminent scholars of ancient philosophy in recent decades. Michael Frede begins by casting doubt on the Letter by looking at it from the general perspective of letter writing in antiquity, when it was quite normal to fabricate letters by famous figures from the past. Both then attack the authenticity of the letter head-on by showing how its philosophical content conflicts with what we find in the Platonic dialogues. They also reflect on the question of why the Letter was written, whether as an attempt to exculpate Plato from the charge of meddling in politics (Frede), or as an attempt to portray, through literary means, the ways in which human weakness and emotions can lead to disasters in political life (Burnyeat).
