Book Synopsis Plastic's Republic by : Giovanna Riccio

Book excerpt: "In 2019, Barbara Millicent Roberts, aka, Barbie will turn 60. Plastic's Republic is a poem-sequence centering on this deathless, cultural icon. The poems in Plastic's Republic began in 2010, following Barbie's well-publicized, 50th birthday in 2009. I view Barbie as a complex cultural figure and as a feminist bête-noir. The collection includes poems written in the voice of the central personalities in Barbie's development and mammoth success, including Ruth Handler who co-founded Mattel with her husband; their daughter Barbara--the doll's inspiration and namesake; and Barbie, herself. Another section titled "Plastications" features poems about Barbie versions that reflect Mattel's opportunistic, marketing response to social trends. Poems on the "Human Barbie" phenomenon treat Barbie-obsessed women who use physical and digital plastic surgery to achieve "dollification.""--
Download or read book Synthetic Socialism written by Eli Rubin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Rubin takes an innovative approach to consumer culture to explore questions of political consensus and consent and the impact of ideology on everyday life in the former East Germany. Synthetic Socialism explores the history of East Germany through the production and use of a deceptively simple material: plastic. Rubin investigates the connections between the communist government, its Bauhaus-influenced designers, its retooled postwar chemical industry, and its general consumer population. He argues that East Germany was neither a totalitarian state nor a niche society but rather a society shaped by the confluence of unique economic and political circumstances interacting with the concerns of ordinary citizens. To East Germans, Rubin says, plastic was a high-technology material, a symbol of socialism's scientific and economic superiority over capitalism. Most of all, the state and its designers argued, plastic goods were of a particularly special quality, not to be thrown away like products of the wasteful West. Rubin demonstrates that this argument was accepted by the mainstream of East German society, for whom the modern, socialist dimension of a plastics-based everyday life had a deep resonance.

Book Synopsis Plastic Free by : Rebecca Prince-Ruiz
Download or read book Plastic Free written by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2011, Rebecca Prince-Ruiz challenged herself to go plastic free for the whole month. Starting with a small group of people in the city of Perth, the Plastic Free July movement has grown into a 250-million strong community across 177 countries, empowering people to reduce single-use plastic consumption and create a cleaner future. This book explores how one of the world’s leading environmental campaigns took off and shares lessons from its success. From narrating marine-debris research expeditions to tracking what actually happens to our waste to sharing insights from behavioral research, it speaks to the massive scale of the plastic waste problem and how we can tackle it together. Interweaving interviews from participants, activists, and experts, Plastic Free tells the inspiring story of how ordinary people have created change in their homes, communities, workplaces, schools, businesses, and beyond. It is easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of global environmental problems and wonder what difference our own actions could possibly make. Plastic Free offers hope for the future through the stories of those who have taken on what looked like an insurmountable challenge and succeeded in innovative and practical ways, one step—and one piece of plastic—at a time.
Book Synopsis Plastic Reality by : Julie A. Turnock
Download or read book Plastic Reality written by Julie A. Turnock and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julie A. Turnock tracks the use and evolution of special effects in 1970s filmmaking, a development as revolutionary to film as the form's transition to sound in the 1920s. Beginning with the classical studio era's early approaches to special effects, she follows the industry's slow build toward the significant advances of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which set the stage for the groundbreaking achievements of 1977. Turnock analyzes the far-reaching impact of the convincing, absorbing, and seemingly unlimited fantasy environments of that year's iconic films, dedicating a major section of her book to the unparalleled innovations of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. She then traces these films' technological, cultural, and aesthetic influence into the 1980s in the deployment of optical special effects as well as the "not-too-realistic" and hyper-realistic techniques of traditional stop motion and Showscan. She concludes with a critique of special effects practices in the 2000s and their implications for the future of filmmaking and the production and experience of other visual media.

Download or read book Tissue Engineering and Plastic Surgery written by Edoardo Raposio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both disciplines, tissue engineering and plastic and reconstructive surgery, share a common objective: to provide living tissue for the repair of congenital or acquired defects. Each new achievement in these fields is a consequence of centuries of previous investigation, observation, and insight. Viewed from a historical perspective, it is of great interest to see the development of the distinct field of tissue engineering on the basis of the tradition of plastic surgery, the beginning of an inextricable relationship. Today, the advances of tissue engineering continue to open up new possibilities in the field of plastic surgery.
Book Synopsis Plastics in the Aquatic Environment - Part I by : Friederike Stock
Download or read book Plastics in the Aquatic Environment - Part I written by Friederike Stock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of how plastic pollution is affecting fresh and marine waters, and what the current challenges in plastic waste assessment and management in the aquatic environment are. Plastic waste comprises particles with heterogeneous physicochemical properties such as large size-range, different shapes and polymer types with various additives determining their environmental fate and risk. This complexity raises several open research questions which are explored in this book. Examples are the plastic uptake by aquatic organisms, degradation processes as well as sources and sinks in the environment. Readers will discover real case studies of plastic pollution detection and management in different parts of the world, including Asia, America and Europe, which provide an integrated overview of the global scope of this issue. This book and the companion volume Plastics in the Aquatic Environment - Part II: Stakeholders' Role Against Pollution are valuable resources to students, researchers, policymakers and environmental managers interested in plastic pollution and working towards its reduction.
