This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed electro-optic modulators in silicon platform are introduced and experimentally verified. The devices rely on plasmonic and photonic slot waveguides and are combined with efficient organic electro-optic materials. The bandwidth limitation of conventional silicon-organic-hybrid modulators is circumvented by capacitive coupling of the microwave signal. An advanced terahertz link that upconverts data directly from a 360 GHz carrier to an optical carrier is demonstrated for the first time.

Book excerpt: The interest for :I:~ modulation-based NO converters has significantly increased in the last years. The reason for that is twofold. On the one hand, unlike other converters that need accurate building blocks to obtain high res olution, :I:~ converters show low sensitivity to the imperfections of their building blocks. This is achieved through extensive use of digital signal pro cessing - a desirable feature regarding the implementation of NO interfaces in mainstream CMOS technologies which are better suited for implementing fast, dense, digital circuits than accurate analog circuits. On the other hand, the number of applications with industrial interest has also grown. In fact, starting from the earliest in the audio band, today we can find :I:~ converters in a large variety of NO interfaces, ranging from instrumentation to commu nications. These advances have been supported by a number of research works that have lead to a considerably large amount of published papers and books cov ering different sub-topics: from purely theoretical aspects to architecture and circuit optimization. However, so much material is often difficultly digested by those unexperienced designers who have been committed to developing a :I:~ converter, mainly because there is a lack of methodology. In our view, a clear methodology is necessary in :I:~ modulator design because all related tasks are rather hard.

Book excerpt: Novel THz device concepts and signal processing schemes are introduced and experimentally confirmed. Record-high data rates are achieved with a simple envelope detector at the receiver. Moreover, a THz communication system using an optoelectronic receiver and a photonic local oscillator is shown for the first time, and a new class of devices for THz transmitters and receivers is investigated which enables a monolithic co-integration of THz components with advanced silicon photonic circuits.

Book excerpt: The routing of data electronically within microprocessors is becoming increasingly challenging due to the large volumes of data being transferred. Optical interconnects on silicon are an attractive alternative to traditional electronic interconnects because they provide higher bandwidth and have the potential to be compatible with low cost, high volume, mature CMOS processing. Recent efforts in silicon photonics have focused on developing a wide range of optical components, such as lasers, amplifiers, photodetectors, that can be integrated on a single platform. Among all, a lot of work has focused on modulators as they are crucial for the generation and transmission of high-speed signals such that increasing demands on data capacity can be satisfied.
